A California dad is refusing to take down the tattered and torn American flag that's been flying on his lawn in Fresno for almost a year, despite complaints from neighbors on his military-heavy block and from a national veterans group that says he's mistreating the Stars and Stripes.

He's disrespecting the flag for the sake of superstition.

That flag needs to be officially retired.
If he wants to honor his son, then frame the flag and display it. It doesn’t honor the flag or those who fight for it to let it fall into disrepair.
And a promise is a promise.
"I made a promise to him that it won't come down until he's home," Haros told FOXNews.com on Tuesday. "Well, it's still there. I feel if I bring it down and something happens to him I don't know."
Okay ... that changes everything. Yes, the flag is tattered and torn. But I can understand his point of view.
Don’t these old f$rts have anything better to do while the country is sinking like the Titanic.Wait until they have good ole deathcare.Maybe that will get the remote out of their hands and their butts off the couch.
This flag has served it's duty. Hand it over the a local Boy Scout Troop and let them retire it respectfully. That was a service we provided to businesses and schools while my kids were in Scouts.
Frame it. I’m sure someone would do it for free....frame and all.
At this point I say leave it, but only because the son is coming home Friday. After that I hope the son gets through to him that this flag that’s served him well for so long deserves a dignified retirement.
Actually, it’s a pretty fitting symbol of the state of our nation. Tattered and on it’s last legs.
While it's unsightly and contrary to flag etiquette, I stand by the father on this one.
The flag itself is nothing more than a piece of cloth ... what's important is what the flag represents.
By my reading of the story, this guy is honoring the spirit of the flag, albeit at the expense of the physical trappings. At the same time, he's honoring his son for his service.
In general, sure ... retire the flag before it's close to looking like that one. But in this case, I just don't see it as a problem.
+1 for superstition.

He’s exercising his freedom. But I wish he’d go up there on a ladder (or send somebody else up, if he’s not able) and do some quick sewing repairs. It wouldn’t take much to make it look a whole lot better.
get a ladder, a needle, and some thread.
Thank you I thought I was the only one fealing that way.
Can’t stand nosy neighbors.I’ve got a block full of them with their remotes/cell phones in their hands when they step outside from their cave.
I’ve had a hard time trying to write this because I just can’t quit crying. If this father wants to leave this flag up for his son, then damn anyone who doesn’t like it. There’s something at work here that those of you who are not fathers of sons in combat will never understand, so shut the hell up.
