He's disrespecting the flag for the sake of superstition.
Other opinions?
If he wants to honor his son, then frame the flag and display it. It doesn’t honor the flag or those who fight for it to let it fall into disrepair.
Don’t these old f$rts have anything better to do while the country is sinking like the Titanic.Wait until they have good ole deathcare.Maybe that will get the remote out of their hands and their butts off the couch.
This flag has served it's duty. Hand it over the a local Boy Scout Troop and let them retire it respectfully. That was a service we provided to businesses and schools while my kids were in Scouts.
Frame it. I’m sure someone would do it for free....frame and all.
While it's unsightly and contrary to flag etiquette, I stand by the father on this one.
The flag itself is nothing more than a piece of cloth ... what's important is what the flag represents.
By my reading of the story, this guy is honoring the spirit of the flag, albeit at the expense of the physical trappings. At the same time, he's honoring his son for his service.
In general, sure ... retire the flag before it's close to looking like that one. But in this case, I just don't see it as a problem.
+1 for superstition.

He’s exercising his freedom. But I wish he’d go up there on a ladder (or send somebody else up, if he’s not able) and do some quick sewing repairs. It wouldn’t take much to make it look a whole lot better.
get a ladder, a needle, and some thread.
Can’t stand nosy neighbors.I’ve got a block full of them with their remotes/cell phones in their hands when they step outside from their cave.
I’ve had a hard time trying to write this because I just can’t quit crying. If this father wants to leave this flag up for his son, then damn anyone who doesn’t like it. There’s something at work here that those of you who are not fathers of sons in combat will never understand, so shut the hell up.
I’ve got a tattered 48 star flag that flew on my dad’s LST before it was decommissioned (and in battle)in 1946. I would never think of flying it but I do want to get one of those triangle display cases for it.
This guy needs to do the same and get a new one to fly.
