“Leaving on a Jet Plane” is a song written by John Denver in 1967 and recorded by the Mitchell Trio that year. The original title of the song was “Oh Babe I Hate To Go” but Denver’s then producer, Milt Okun, convinced him to change the title.

Denver wrote the song after his flight was delayed. Other artists recorded the song in 1967, including Spanky & Our Gang and Peter, Paul and Mary on Album 1700.

It did not become a hit until Peter, Paul and Mary released it as a single in 1969.

I have many tapes by John Denver. Country Roads is one of my favorites. What a ‘down home’ singer he was.

Food ought not be held in such disgrace, for why did the Lord give us taste buds? We were meant to eat, for food is a gift from God. There is this culture, a dread of death so strong it takes from us our appreciation of life.

So many are so caught up in wringing out the smallest advantage in living longer, that they forget how to actually live. They dare nothing, shaming those who take chances, those who remind them of their own mortality. I think that the treatment of the old in this country is based in this same dread, the old remind the younger that time changes them, no matter how much they strive otherwise.

We leave this mortal coil when the Lord decides, not how many miles you run, no matter what stark limits on life you undertake to try and live longer. No matter the fear of trans fats, second hand smoking, environmental forces, or lifestyles, you fear can really change the length of your time here. You are here, until God decides its time.

So, I will enjoy good food, the occasional cigar, the sip of a good wine or the brief fire of an aged single-malt, and smile. My time here is spent in learning the things I have to learn, the lessons I must learn, and the appreciation of life in all its variety. I cling not to this short time, but look to the time to come, far longer and richer, far sweeter and more precious then this time of testing. Perhaps when we understand the purpose of this life, we can actually begin to value it better. \

We are not here to maximize our life span, it is to live and learn and in humble respect see that we are but being tested, to see if we are worthy of the eternal life that awaits the faithful. In that vain, I enjoy this life and fear not the end of this, for that is but the beginning of a greater.

Welcome To Sunday At Amy's Place

I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.
My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.
He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will
not slumber.... Psalm 121:1-3

I totally agree with your ‘very well put’ post, Johnn! We don’t have to go overboard on anything but we need not deprive ourselves of every good thing in life. I had a Dad who loved gravy! Ham and gravy, sausage and gravy, or just gravy! We used to tease Mom and tell her to just keep a dishpan of gravy in the fridge to warm it up for him every day! This was all in fun of course...they weren’t doing the cholesteral check all the time then as they do today!

It wouldn’t have changed my Dad’s ways anyway as he was old-fashioned and couldn’t be changed. But you know what?
He was a happy, gentle man and loved every day of his life. And that is a very important thing to consider in our all around living.
