Weekly Roundup - Living On Nothing Edition Category: Roundups | Comments(15)
Did you hear about the guy that lives on nothing? No seriously, he lives on zero dollars a day. Meet Daniel Suelo, who lives in a cave outside Moab, Utah. Suelo has no mortgage, no car payment, no debt of any kind. He also has no home, no car, no television, and absolutely no creature comforts. But he does have a lot of creatures, as in the mice and bugs that scurry about the cave floor hes called home for the last three years.
To us, Suelo probably sounds a little extreme. Actually, he probably sounds very extreme. After all, I suspect most of you reading this are doing so under the protection of some sort of man-made shelter, and with some amount of money on your person, and probably a few needs for money, too. And who doesnt need money unless they have completely unplugged from the grid? Still, its an amusing story about a guy who rejects all forms of consumerism as we know it.

>>> That is a lot of work and effort to drive it from the ground to the roof, <<<
HA , yes maybe I did not make the “/sarc “ as noticeable as I should have..DW may think it really is my front yard..
It seems I get a lot of “redneck” jokes and photos.. wonder why (grin)
You’ve probably seen the picture of the redneck gingerbread house then - a mobile home with cars up on blocks in the yard, etc. I love that one when it comes around this time every year.
BTW, I lost internet connection at the cabin for a couple of weeks. I’m back in the city now ;( and will need to figure out a way to connect again when I go back in January. I’ll probably spend the money and get something faster than dialup. Satellite link is all that works up there, so it’ll be pricey. But I was missing this thread and everybody here!
>>> Youve probably seen the picture of the redneck gingerbread house then - a mobile home with cars up on blocks in the yard, etc. <<<
Yes, if it’s the one I’m thinking about, that one is great,
>>> Satellite link is all that works up there, so itll be pricey. But I was missing this thread and everybody here! <<
I’ve been debating HughesNet..since Wild Blue does not install in my area .
I had the 1st generation DirecPC which used phone line for send and satellite downlink,, back then there was no “fair use policy” of throttling back your bandwidth on heavy use.
There may be a radio link service available in you area , it’s a little more pricey than Hughes but no throttle back.
and Verizon/ATT/Sprint wireless , but Verizon’s 5-7 gb limit per month could be eaten up rather quickly. and since Sprint in my area uses verizons towers, and is not compatible with EVO network , I have a nice little usb modem that connects to nothing. ha !

You were missed!
Welcome back!
>>>but at least I had time to do some decorating outside.<<<
Dang Eagle - got some time to help me decorate - yours looks mighty fine!
I thought I was fairly creative in ways to get our of the hours of ‘shopping’ so enjoyed by wife and daughters - then I saw this:

Why my wife won’t take me shopping
Posted on Monday, December 14, 2009 5:01:46 PM by Gopher Broke
After I retired, my wife insisted that I accompany her on her trips to Target. Unfortunately, like most men, I found shopping boring and preferred to get in and get out. Equally unfortunate, my wife is like most women - she loves to browse. Yesterday my dear wife received the following letter from the local Target.
Dear Mrs. UNOWHO,
Over the past six months, your husband has caused quite a commotion in our store. We cannot tolerate this behavior and have been forced to ban both of you from the store. Our complaints against your husband, Mr. Samuel, are listed below and are documented by our video surveillance cameras.
1. June 15: Took 24 boxes of condoms and randomly put them in other people’s carts when they weren’t looking.
2. July 2: Set all the alarm clocks in Housewares to go off at 5-minute intervals.
3. July 7: He made a trail of tomato juice on the floor leading to the restroom.
4. July 19: Walked up to an employee and told her in an official voice, ‘Code 3 in Housewares. Get on it right away’. This caused the employee to leave her assigned station and receive a reprimand from her Supervisor that in turn resulted with a union grievance, causing management to lose time and costing the company money.
5. August 4: Went to the Service Desk and tried to put a bag of M&Ms on layaway.
6. August 14: Moved a ‘CAUTION - WET FLOOR’ sign to a carpeted area.
7. August 15: Set up a tent in the camping department and told the children shoppers he’d invite them in if they would bring pillows and blankets from the bedding department to which twenty children obliged.
8. August 23: When a clerk asked if they could help him he began crying and screamed, ‘Why can’t you people just leave me alone?’ EMTs were called.
9. September 4: Looked right into the security camera and used it as a mirror while he picked his nose.
10. September 10: While handling guns in the hunting department, he asked the clerk where the antidepressants were.
11. October 3: Darted around the store suspiciously while loudly humming the ‘Mission Impossible’ theme.
12. October 6: In the auto department, he practiced his ‘Madonna look’ by using different sizes of funnels.
13. October 18: Hid in a clothing rack and when people browsed through, yelled ‘PICK ME! PICK ME!’
14. October 21: When an announcement came over the loud speaker, he assumed a fetal position and screamed ‘OH NO! IT’S THOSE VOICES AGAIN!’
And last, but not least: 15. October 23: Went into a fitting room, shut the door, waited awhile, then yelled very loudly, ‘Hey! There’s no toilet paper in here.’ One of the clerks passed out.
I have been totally out-classed! [DW]
Thanks for the info, Eagle. So far, all I hear is available in the mountains is Wild Blue and Hughes. Either has to be better than the dialup I was using! (although more costly).
I have to admit that trying to live a simpler, calmer life was certainly easier with dialup. Over the past month, I’ve enjoyed many a morning waiting for a page to load while having a hot cup of coffee and looking out the window next to the computer table watching the snow gently falling. After I get the higher speed connection, I’m sure I’ll be losing some of that back-to-nature feeling. (As well as some of the frustration of being on the computer for hours AND friends telling me that they can’t ever get me on the phone because it’s alwasy busy!)
Problem with satellite is the latency. (as well as capped traffic and cost) If you try to use it on a VPN (virtual private network) like to work at the office from home, you will have each packet having a delay as it is verified with the about 6 second delay - you send a packet, wait for acceptance to come back before another is sent.
I have two neighbors on Hughes and both are trying along with me to get them to put the DSLAM and back router hardware in the box they specifically built for it just 6,500’ (well within their limits) from my home.
They say that if I can get 25% of the local user community to sign a binding request, they will put it in within a year based on a court case from Pennsylvania. Nothing like them saying ‘Hey, you do all the sales work and we will then work at a snails pace to hook it up and we will take the profit.” I tell them ‘If I am going to work for you as an outside salesman, I would expect to be compensated.’
Then I try reminding them that we pay ‘universal service’ fee that is to compensate them for bringing service to ALL - they then say they only think that applies to phones.
To my way of thinking, bringing broadband to everyone at reasonable cost would reduce unemployment, reduce road usage, reduce traffic jams, raise standard of living, bring educational possibilities to all uniformly.
Even if the used the old Rural Electric Cooperatives as a model - they guaranteed loans to bring electricity to everyone - There have been zero losses on that money and they haave ALL been paid off now. WITH INTEREST. AND it is locally controlled and owned by the members who have a say in how the cooperative operates and members share the profits! But, what do I know - 535 in DC think they know EVERYTHING - Who should get broadband - who needs a mammogram - How to grow food crops - How to build cars - These have to be some really smart people.... /s
LOL, all those stunts beat my old one - back when they used to ask for a drivers license when you wrote a check, I would occasionally look right at the young lady clerk with a goofy look and crossed eyes and say ‘You don’t think they would give ME a drivers license do you?’
I loved to see their panicked reactions (and my wife’s embarrassment).
I sort of liked the last one - ‘Hey, there’s no toilet paper in here!’ - Well the tomato juice to the restroom and oh yeah, dropping those condoms in random carts (bet there were some questions to answer for that)...

An Urban Farm Teaches Millennials How to Disobey
Waxman sought to have a group of students physically reclaim a strip of public land
bordering the school’s street, which California College of the Arts (CCA) shares
with homeless residents as well as day laborers. Waxman believed they could intervene
agriculturally on the block-which was littered with hypodermic needles-by growing
enough food for the neighbors. “We were three transient populations brought together
by a piece of toxic land that held the potential for building community and for
addressing a food issue,” she remembers. Dubbing the project FARM (Future Action
Reclamation Mob) she encouraged students through posters and other campaign methods
to rally behind the cause, using language she believed would appeal to the Millennials.

Why do I mill at home? Part 1
December 9th, 2009
The Mill I use.
The Mill I use.
Okay, I will be the first to admit it, I was not raised to be a domestic person. When I first heard of milling grain at home I was puzzled and thought it was a far fetched idea, time consuming and a big mess. It didnt take me long to see how wrong I was.
One tip to answering those questions of You do what? and Why bother? is to know the two biggest benefits of milling at home. First are the health benefits and second are the storage/cost effect benefits. In this tip we will focus on the health reasons.
When grains are processed into flour for shelf storage, most of the grain parts are removed to slow the spoilage time. When those things are removed, the flour is stripped of the Wheat Bran, Middlings, Wheat Germ and Wheat Germ oil. As we read that list we see at least three things that are now sold in health food stores across the world. The Bran and Middlings provide the fiber (and more), the Germ and oil provide the vitamin E (and more), two things missing in the typical diet of the twentieth century.
The additives to dead bagged flour can be just as bad or worse than what is missing. To make that white appearance, at first the manufacturers were actually using chlorine bleach! Now a new chemical has been approved., but chemicals are chemicals and not found IN the grain. Since the grain is stripped of so many nutrients in the processing synthetic vitamins have been added. Personally, since I wouldnt eat polyester, I also dont want synthetic vitamins.
This is simply the tip of the health iceberg when it comes to the reason to mill grains at home. The list related to your families health goes on and on. Check out some of our other articles and studies for the healthy reasons to bother with milling at home. At least this is a tip to help you answer those questions when friends and family think youve slipped back into the dark ages.

TIP #3: Hard, Soft, Red or White Easy differences.
December 2nd, 2009
The Wonder Mill
The Wonder Mill
Freshly ground whole wheat is wonderful! But not all recipes work the same with one type of wheat.
Here is a breakdown of wheat types and which recipe to use them:
~ HARD wheat is best for breads and items that require high rising.
~ SOFT wheat is best for pastries and flat breads such as pancakes, tortillas and biscuits.
~ Both types can be mixed equally to make a light texture for all purpose flour.
Color effects the flavor of the flour not the consistancy:
~ REDS will have a more ‘nutty’ (to me it’s almost a bitter) flavor.
~ WHITES are usually just lighter tan or almost golden and have a smoother taste.
~ Both can be mixed equally to make a deliciously light bread without a bitter result.
Muffins, pancakes, cookies and biscuits can all be made from blending types and colors.
Loaf breads have the best result by using a HARD (either color) type only. It contains the most gluten for the rise of yeast bread.
Happy Milling!!
Best Blessings,
Donna Miller, Owner of MILLERS GRAIN HOUSE

Tip #2 to milling grains for fresh flour measuring.
November 30th, 2009
Level off at the top to measure correctly!
Level off at the top to measure correctly!
Measure correctly to avoid excess flour after grinding.
One of the BIGGEST reasons for grinding grains is the immediate release of all those nutrients. If you end up with a cup or more of flour just sitting there, oxidizing, dying and loosing nutrients
it not only wastes precious fresh flour it defeats the purpose. A good rule of thumb to follow is: Grains usually produce half again as much as you put in the mill. For example: 2 cups of grain will produce approximately 3 cups of flour. Write the amount of grain next to your recipe once you have perfected it. Waste not want not!

TIPS TO REMEMBER WHEN USING FRESHLY GROUND GRAINS: #1
November 10th, 2009
1. Rainy weather will have some effect on your bread rising.
Rain
The moisture gets trapped more easily in the wheat or grain that has just been cracked by milling. Its more susceptible to absorbing moisture than dead flour that has sat on a shelf for months. So you may need to slightly adjust the water amount in your recipe or add more gluten to the mix to get the bread to rise. I personally avoid bread on rainy days and focus on tortillas and other flat or quick breads.
EnJOY the journey!
Best Blessings!

Basic Whole Wheat Bread: More than loaf bread
October 23rd, 2009
You can stretch your budget and your menu with the one basic bread recipe that we send out with every newsletter.
Freshly Milled Whole-wheat Hotdog Buns
Freshly Milled Whole-wheat Hotdog Buns
“How?” you may ask. Simply look at the lump of dough differently.
The Basic “Fool Proof” Bread Recipe we send out second in our newsletter series can be shaped into:
~ Burger Buns
~ Hot Dog Buns
~ Hoagie Buns
~ Bread Sticks (filled and twisted or just plain, warm and toasty)
~ Bread Bowls for Chilli and Soups
~ and SO many more potentials
.
Even once made they can become other things if not used up:
~ Croutons (any of the above)
~ Garlic Bread (best for the hot dog/hoagie buns)
~ Toasted Crackers (slice thin [if not split for burger or hot dog] and butter/toast)
~ Open Faced Cheese Bread (Top with mixed cheeses and broil) to go with soups
So even as simple as the ONE recipe may be. Don’t get stuck with it ALWAYS just being a loaf of bread! Shape and use it in multiple ways!
Best Blessings!~

The following are some of my favorite and most frequently used whole grain recipes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
‘Fool Proof’ Simple Loaf Bread - 2lb Loaf Recipe
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Note: Only 2 rises! Once as a lump and once as a loaf before baking!
* 1 ½ Cup Warm Water (100-110 degrees)
* 1 Tablespoon Oil (Olive, Canola, Safflower or Sunflower)
* ¼ Cup Sweet Stuff (Sugar, Honey or Sucanant)
* 3 ½ Cups of Flour (this can be any combination of Whole Wheat and
White Bread Flour - best for newbies to start out with 1 ½ Cups
White & 2 Cups Whole Wheat)
* ¼ Cup Gluten
* ½ teaspoon salt
* 1 ½ teaspoon Flieshmann’s Instant Yeast
For Bread Machine - put ingredients in in order given and set to
‘Dough Setting’ - now go fold clothes, vacuum and clean the shower
(o:
By Hand or with Mixer/Dough Hook - Mix all the water, oil, sweet
stuff together in your mixing bowl. Proof your yeast in the whole
liquid if you want to. Instant yeast does not HAVE to be proofed
(let get bubbly) but it won’t hurt it if you do. In a separate
bowl, mix all your dry ingredients (flours, gluten, salt and yeast
if you didn’t proof it)
Slowly add dry to the liquid stirring until too hard to use a
spoon, then start the hand kneading process (or if in the kitchen
aid - start the dough hooks, or if in the Bosch Mixer...follow
directions for kneading)
Knead (by hand, by hook or by Bosch ) minimum 10 minutes - up to 15
minutes - until dough feels elastic and looks silky-like (or in
Bosch Mixer - it pulls away from the sides)
Cover bowl with a clean cloth towel.
Let dough rise once in the bowl in semi warm place approximately 30
minutes or until double the size it started.
LIGHTLY punch it down to get all the air out after it rose the
first time.
(All above steps are done on ‘Dough Setting’ of your bread machine)
Turn out onto AN OILED (not floured - it makes it heavy and dense)
surface to REST for 5 minutes (this helps the gluten that has
formed to relax a bit and not ‘crack’ the crust)
Now form your loaf by flattening by hand, and rolling up like a
‘jelly roll’ and after tucking ends in and seam side down, place it
into a greased loaf pan.
Cover the pan with a clean towel and let rise in a semi-warm place
another 30 minutes.
Last 10 minutes of rising, preheat oven to 350 degrees (be sure
your racks are placed so that loaves bake in the middle of the
oven).
Bake 18-22 minutes in center of the oven. Start checking for
golden tops and ‘hollow’ sound when top is tapped at about 18
minutes
Take out of pans and cool on a wire rack.
Wait at least 10 minutes before attempting to cut - or it smooshes!
If you can wait that long after smelling it bake! Use a serrated
knife for best results in cutting.
