Weekly Roundup - Living On Nothing Edition Category: Roundups | Comments(15)

Did you hear about the guy that lives on nothing? No seriously, he lives on zero dollars a day. Meet Daniel Suelo, who lives in a cave outside Moab, Utah. Suelo has no mortgage, no car payment, no debt of any kind. He also has no home, no car, no television, and absolutely no “creature comforts.” But he does have a lot of creatures, as in the mice and bugs that scurry about the cave floor he’s called home for the last three years.

To us, Suelo probably sounds a little extreme. Actually, he probably sounds very extreme. After all, I suspect most of you reading this are doing so under the protection of some sort of man-made shelter, and with some amount of money on your person, and probably a few needs for money, too. And who doesn’t need money unless they have completely unplugged from the grid? Still, it’s an amusing story about a guy who rejects all forms of consumerism as we know it.

Byetta (exenatide) - Renal Failure

Audience: Endocrine and nephrology healthcare professionals

FDA notified healthcare professionals of revisions to the prescribing information for Byetta (exenatide) to include information on post-marketing reports of altered kidney function, including acute renal failure and insufficiency. Byetta, an incretin-mimetic, is approved as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

From April 2005 through October 2008, FDA received 78 cases of altered kidney function (62 cases of acute renal failure and 16 cases of renal insufficiency), in patients using Byetta. Some cases occurred in patients with pre-existing kidney disease or in patients with one or more risk factors for developing kidney problems. Labeling changes include:

* Information regarding post-market reports of acute renal failure and insufficiency, highlighting that Byetta should not be used in patients with severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance <30 ml/min) or end-stage renal disease.
* Recommendations to healthcare professionals that caution should be applied when initiating or increasing doses of Byetta from 5 mcg to 10 mcg in patients with moderate renal impairment (creatinine clearance 30 to 50 ml/min).
* Recommendations that healthcare professionals monitor patients carefully for the development of kidney dysfunction, and evaluate the continued need for Byetta if kidney dysfunction is suspected while using the product.
* Information about kidney dysfunction in the patient Medication Guide to help patients understand the benefits and potential risks associated with Byetta.

I sent the coupon article to my daughter. She got me started back into coupons a year ago. I do what I can, but am not into it as heavy as others. However, I did just get 20 of the small Quaker Oatmeal barrels for free from Walgreens last week using coupons. I also got shavers, chapstick, Robitussin cough medicine, dental floss, toothbrushes, and lotion for free during October. Some of it goes to our food pantry at church.

Thanks for alerting me here, for I no longer check my pings, seems that I run out of go power, before I get to them.

Interesting thread, hard to tell what is really going on, with the election coming up, we will be getting a messed up version of the news.

Russia does not support the President of Ukraine, unless my memory is gone, he was poisoned during the last election, to keep him out of office, for Russia wants to control Ukraine and all of the Soviet Union again.

The Russian supporters there, are Russians that were moved to Ukraine, thousands of them, to do just that, ruin the real citizens elections, much as we are experiencing with the illegals coming across our borders and affecting our elections.

(small excerpt):
With crude oil back above $80 per barrel, we will soon see a renewed interest
in alternative energy. This will create increased demand for wheat, corn and
sugar which are used to make ethanol and other biofuels. A massive rise in
agriculture prices is just around the corner.

As I understand it, from reading, there was a big jump in prices this past week.

The elections will be interesting, will the thugs be on duty again at the polling places?

INFLUENZA PANDEMIC (H1N1) 2009 (83): IRAQ, SCHOOLS

Swine flu [influenza A (H1N1)] panic shuts down 2000 schools

Panic over the possible spread of pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza has
prompted the closure of more than 2000 schools in Iraq, according to
officials. Education minister Khudhair Al-Khuzaie said the unauthorized
closure of schools was “illegal and unprofessional” and blamed “exaggerated
media reports that have created such a panic”. “Over the past week, we
diagnosed 4 cases of pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza among school students
in the southern province of Kut, then the number increased to 25 cases and
that prompted us to quarantine and shut down the school [where the cases
were detected],” said Ihsan Jaafar, a senior Health Ministry official.

A few days later, other cases were confirmed in 6 Baghdad schools. “We’ve
also closed them and that brings the total number of schools closed based
on decisions issued by the Health Ministry to 7,” Jaafar told IRIN.
“Unjustified panic” had prompted some officials in southern Iraq to close
schools where no H1N1 cases had been detected, a measure “unacceptable to
the Health Ministry,” Jaafar said.

On 20 Oct 2009, 2 local officials in the southern provinces of Thi Qar and
Kut said that nearly 2500 schools and kindergartens would be closed to
prevent the disease from spreading. Muthana Hassan Mahdi of Kut education
directorate said a 5 day precautionary shutdown had been in force since 21
Oct 2009 in 950 schools and kindergartens. Meanwhile, Hadi Al-Riyahi, a
local health official, said 1477 schools would be closed in Thi Qar for 10
days from 22 Oct 2009. Kut is 160 km [about 100 mi] and Thi Qar is 320 km
[about 200 mi] south of Baghdad.

Precautionary measures: schools should only be closed for a week if a
teacher and 2—3 students have the disease, Jaafar said. Those infected
would be quarantined and the school sterilized. Students and infected
students’ families would be closely monitored, he added. Tamiflu stocks
were sufficient for 300 000 cases; another batch of 150 000 doses was
expected in the next few days, he said.

According to the Health Ministry, the total number of confirmed H1N1 cases
in Iraq is 523, of whom 113 are Iraqis and the rest foreigners, including
members of the US forces. The death toll stands at 3.

I've also heard that inventories in stores are VERY low, because last year so very little sold, so retailers have only a certain amount of merchandise available for this holiday season, and some retailers have already started special holiday sales. Yet, I believe in some specialty magazines I saw some experts being quoted as saying that they can tell that a certain percentage of the population is having "Frugality Fatigue" - and they are starting to leave generic store brands and beans & rice & staples in favor of more expensive brand name foods.

THAT was really hard for me to imagine. I mean... really, in the stores -- aisle after aisle after aisle -- basic items are all noticably higher in price.

Crafters Medley: 30 Neat-O Projects To Make (February)

Posted By TipNut On February 21, 2009 @ 6:19 am In Crafty Ideas | 2 Comments

1. Dilly Bag Tutorial [1]: Here is a lovely little Dilly Bag – 24 inch in circumference, 9 1/2 inch high and 7 inch diameter base (approximate measurements).
2. Log Cabin Block Pincushion Tutorial [2]: You know at this time with the economy, you need to get as much as you can out of what you got. So very little fabric has to be used.
3. Copper Bookmark Tutorial [3]: First up is a copper bookmark and this is a beginner project. No metalsmithing or metal arts experience needed. Best of all is that most of the supplies are available at your local chain Home Center or hardware store – or in your husband’s tool chest.
4. Moccasin Slippers [4]: These slippers are cushy and perfect for a night in with popcorn. They’ll keep your toes warm no matter how cold it is outside. Knitting pattern.
5. Umbrella Light Cover [5]: A hacksaw shortened the remainder of the pole, and then it was just a matter of some eyehooks screwed into the ceiling and some wire – and – bob’s your uncle – it was done.
6. Needle Wrap: A Tutorial [6]: A little double-pointed needle wrap, just right for bamboo needles.
7. Tutorial: Easy Pillow Case With Contrasting Hem [7]: A quick and easy way to make a pillow case in a snap.
8. Leaf Drawstring Bag [8]: Cute tutorial for a drawstring bag in the shape of a leaf.
9. Nintendo DS Pouch Tutorial [9]: Nice job! Fold over, envelope style with snap closure.
10. Duvet Tutorial [10]: Use two flat sheets to create this duvet cover.
11. Tutorial :: Rachel’s Crochet Hook Case [11]: This could also be used for other items, too! Make the “pockets” a little bigger and you can hold a few pairs of knitting needles. You could make a small art case out of this to hold colored pencils, artist pencils, pens…Pattern is available via pdf download.
12. How To Make A Super Simple Camera Case [12]: The only materials needed are fabric (outer and inner), bias binding (you could make your own or buy one), matching thread, and a button.
13. Grumperina’s DPN Roll [13]: Simple roll made from a placemat.
14. Suey, the Super Sock Pig Pattern and Tutorial [14]: Welcome to the Suey, the Super Sock Pig Pattern and Tutorial. Now you can learn how to mysteriously transform an ordinary sock into something, er, well SUPER!
15. Reusable Snack Bag Tutorial [15]: Uses scrap sizes of fabric, PUL or oil cloth, velcro closure.
16. Fat Quarter Tote Bag Tutorial [16]: Tutorial for a tote bag using a fat quarter of fabric. It will use every bit of it, but you do want to make sure everything is squared and true, which may mean you need to trim a little bit here and there to get to those perfect measurements.
17. Tutorial: Quick Notebook Cover [17]: This is a super easy and quick notebook cover. It took approximately one hour.
18. Downloadable Teapot Pattern [18]: Teapot quilt block pattern & tute.

27. DIY Project – Message Marbles [27]: Offered as a wedding favor but I think these would be nice for everyday too. Sprinkled on guests tables and around the reception, these customized “message marbles” are perfect little take aways for guests.

Homemade Potato Chips Recipe

Posted By TipNut On July 24, 2007 @ 10:07 am In Food, Recipes | No Comments

Today’s feature is another great recipe from Elise.com with Oven-fried Potato Chips Recipe [1]:

These crispy thin potato slices are just divine. I call them potato chips because they taste like the best potato chips you will ever have. But I suspect that one might not classify them as a chip given their 1/8 inch thickness.

The recipe is from Gourmet magazine and it calls for 4 russet potatoes sliced 1/8 inch diagonally, 1/4 cup melted butter to brush on the slices and coarse salt sprinkled on after they’re done cooking (500°F oven for 15 to 20 minutes).

I preferred the comments area suggestion of using extra virgin olive oil instead of butter. I love butter (probably too much!), but EVOO is great too so I had no problem making this sacrifice at an attempt to make the snack a little healthier.

Another suggestion was to use herb infused olive oil for more flavor and less chance of herbs burning up in the oven (great tip) and a tip to first soak the potato slices in water to get rid of much of the starch as well as making the chips crispier.

Great recipe and excellent tips shared, I also love the idea that these are oven baked instead of deep fried–eases the fat load a bit .

Please visit the site above for full recipe details.

How To Bake Potatoes Fast + Recipe

Posted By TipNut On February 27, 2007 @ 6:31 am In Cooking Tips, Food, Recipes | No Comments

Two different tips for cutting the time needed for baked potatoes. First scrub and clean potatoes as you normally do, then:

* Parboil [1] the potatoes by boiling them in water for about 5 – 7 minutes. Drain, then dry with a clean tea towel. Bake in the oven as usual, you’ll find the cooking time cut in half (approximately).

You could also cut potatoes in half, rub butter or fat over the cut end and bake as usual. Because the potatoes are half in size, they’ll cook a lot faster.

If you’re interested in baking potatoes in the microwave, check out this tip: Make Your Own Potato Baker Bags [2].

If you like onions on your baked potatoes, before baking (but after parboiling if using that method) try slicing the potato in half but not all the way through to prevent the potato from separating (you could also cut in thirds). Place slices of white onion in the cut, a dab of butter, then wrap the potato in foil and bake (cut side up). Delicious!
Simple Baked Potato Recipe

* Coat potatoes with oil (olive or canola), sprinkle generously with kosher salt and lightly with pepper (optional). Place directly on middle rack* in preheated oven (350 degrees) until done–about 60 minutes for 4 potatoes. Use a fork to test for doneness, the potatoes will be soft inside when speared.

*Make sure to have a cookie sheet or pan on the rack underneath to catch oil drippings.

How To Make Potato Baker Bags

Posted By TipNut On November 27, 2006 @ 4:50 pm In Crafts, Sewing | 16 Comments

Perfectly baked potatoes using a microwave and a fabric bag? Cute idea!

* This simple bag creates a “just right” baked potato in your microwave. The inside is well done, yet moist, and the skin remains tender.
* The bag will cook one to four medium sized
potatoes at once.
* Simply wash and dry your Potatoes. DO NOT PRICK!!
* Wrap the potatoes in a paper towel and place in bag.
* Microwave as instructed by the microwave manufacturer. Time will vary per microwave.
* When serving, do not cut with knife, simply use a fork. potatoes will be very fluffy.
* Let the bag air dry. ENJOY!!

Free pattern/tutorial to make your own potato bags found on the web archive here: Potato Baker Bags [1]

Caution: Please do not leave unattended and make sure to use only 100% cotton materials. From a comment below: If your microwave is too hot to use the bags, either turn down in temperature or don’t use the bags (sparking or small burn hole problems in the fabric).

There's an interesting development on the last page of the BIG continuing very long messagethread about H1N1.

Here is PAGE ONE of that long flu thread:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2278371/posts

A pediatrician told the father of a daughter who has all the symptoms of H1N1, and whos own little sister was diagnosed with H1N1 and has recovered -- the pediatrician told the father that she has to get an H1N1 vaccination in a few weeks.

There are many online reports about people getting H1N1, getting all well, and then later on, becoming RE-infected with H1N1.

Inotherwords... getting H1N1 doesn't confer immunity -- but apparently the experts believe that the vaccinations do.

Granny, do you consider this 'curious'?

Here's the latest I learned from the dad:

One of the more interesting comments on a Flutrackers thread. By "FluFreak".

I have been told straight out by someone deep in the government loop that "you can get and recover from this virus without gaining immunity. This is why the vaccine is so important."

They are NOT openly touting this at the moment because they fear panic would ensue due to lack of availability. I assume they will emphasize this later to increase percentage vaccinated.
