Weekly Roundup - Living On Nothing Edition Category: Roundups | Comments(15)

Did you hear about the guy that lives on nothing? No seriously, he lives on zero dollars a day. Meet Daniel Suelo, who lives in a cave outside Moab, Utah. Suelo has no mortgage, no car payment, no debt of any kind. He also has no home, no car, no television, and absolutely no “creature comforts.” But he does have a lot of creatures, as in the mice and bugs that scurry about the cave floor he’s called home for the last three years.

To us, Suelo probably sounds a little extreme. Actually, he probably sounds very extreme. After all, I suspect most of you reading this are doing so under the protection of some sort of man-made shelter, and with some amount of money on your person, and probably a few needs for money, too. And who doesn’t need money unless they have completely unplugged from the grid? Still, it’s an amusing story about a guy who rejects all forms of consumerism as we know it.

The Frugal Roundup

How to Brew Your Own Beer and Maybe Save Some Money. A fantastic introduction to home brewing, something I’ve never done myself, but always been interested in trying. (@Generation X Finance)

Contentment: A Great Financial Principle. If I had to name one required emotion for living a frugal lifestyle it would be contentment. Once you are content with your belongings and your lot in life you can ignore forces attempting to separate you from your money. (@Personal Finance by the Book)

Use Energy Star Appliances to Save On Utility Costs. I enjoyed this post because it included actual numbers, and actual total savings, from someone who upgraded to new, energy star appliances. (@The Digerati Life)

Over-Saving for Retirement? Is it possible to “over-save” for retirement? Yes, I think so. At some point I like the idea of putting some money aside in taxable investments outside of retirement funds, to be accessed prior to traditional retirement age. (@The Simple Dollar)

40 Things to Teach My Kids Before They Leave Home. A great list of both practical and philosophical lessons to teach your kids before they reach the age where they know everything. I think that now happens around 13 years-old. (@My Supercharged Life)

Index Fund Investing Overview. If you are looking for a place to invest with high diversification and relatively low fees (for broader index funds with low turnover), index funds are a great place to start. (@Money Smart Life)

5 Reasons To Line Dry Your Laundry. My wife and I may soon be installing a clothesline in our backyard. In many neighborhoods they are frowned upon - one of the reasons I don’t like living in a neighborhood. I digress. One of our neighbors recently put up a clothesline, and we might just follow his lead. (@Simple Mom)

Awwww, thanks DW!

How did you know I didn’t get to buy enough Air Force stuff when we were at Lackland? ;)

Seems every time he was standing in a formation and a plane would take off or land, his head instinctively followed it - getting him in trouble... The penalty - double-time around the airfield..<<<

That I can understand, for I still do the same, can’t resist at least a glimpse of its running lights at night.

The Mercy flight copter goes over my mobile, the full length, when it is on a real emergency flight, you can hear the extra strain and at times, I really fear it is too overloaded to clear the mountain.

Imagine how boring I find this area of Arizona, the airport is 25 miles east of me, so very seldom see a plane.

At Wellton, Az, my property line was across the street from the Yuma Proving Grounds test range and they all flew over my place to reach it, even the Space Ship.

I once told Bill that I had gotten out the door in time to see a medium sized airplane, make a sharp right hand turn, he said no, planes did not do that, I must have seen a helicopter.

I knew what I saw for it was too low and I looked at the bottom of the plane as it went over.

That weekend, it was on the news, a test plane from England with a Rolls Royce engine, that could make turns.

This was about 1974.

We even had spies show up in 1970, but then we did not know what they were talking about, for we knew nothing of what flew on the range, they had gone for a 5 mile walk and all of a sudden were looking in our window and asking questions, a middle aged foreign type of couple.

Bill being the nice guy that he was, took them back to town, for it was 10 or 11 pm and not the time to walk in our neighborhood, lots of rattlesnakes.

They said they were staying at the motel.

The next morning, after we had decided they did not add up, Bill went to town “to see if they were OK?”, they had lied and had not stayed at the motel, this was in 1970 or early in 71.

Bill bought the Sunday paper and there it was, the new Jet Helicopter had been tested on our range. And we missed it or did not know it existed so had no idea what it was.

By the time the space ship tests came, Bill worked for a man, who had been in the Air Force with one of its pilots and I worked at the Court, so we knew all about the s. ships and I watched them most week nights, while I milked my goats. 1973 era and later, lots of years of testing and the base was in the Wellton district.

For vegetable soup that I plan to eat for several days in a row, I make sure to use the OUTER leaves of cabbages, and the OUTERMOST layers of peeled onions. These are the parts of cabbages & onions that most people throw away — but because they are so very tough, they are PERFECT for a large pot of soup — because they don’t fall apart into nothing: on Day 3 of this type of veggie soup, you can still identify the piece of diced onion or chopped cabbage.<<<

I have always been interested in the French stock pots and at times tried them out.

When I am going to cook a lot of things, for freezing or a special dinner, I put a large pot on the back of the stove and start tossing things in it, bones, fat, tough parts of vegetables, what ever comes to hand.

The last time I did it, I had 4 gallons of excellent soup to freeze when I was done.

You can fish out the bones and too tough parts and leave the rest, or even put it through the blender, after removing the bones.

Maybe I can get one in time to get it on the tree this year.

That would be great ;) I know my son will think I'm silly, with all the Air Force T-shirts I bought and all his pictures all over the house, but inside he'll be glad we're so proud.

BTW, my favorite thing I got at Lackland was a dog tag type necklace that says 'Proud Air Force Mom' on the front. And we were able to take his photo that he bought - he's in his dress blues with a flag behind him - and have them put it on the back. (I got 2)

I was horrified to discover how EASY it is — “r.e.f.r.y.” actually refers to boiling down cooked beans and mashing them all up — it really doesn’t have anything to do with either frying or with re-frying — EXCEPT that the boil down is done using a frying pan, with a pretty high heat, to help evaporate the bean cooking water.<<<

My Mexican neighbors, when I was a kid, boiled them down and then refried them in bacon grease...

Less is indeed better on the pocket book. I don’t use but just a couple tablespoons of liquid laundry detergent.<<<

You can do the same with the fabric softners, use less or cut the sheets in half or smaller.

One lady that I read, said that she could not / or had not been able to train her family to use less soap, so she buys the liquid, dilutes it half with water, in one of the empty bottles and lets the family use their full amount of half mix.

I know that when my sister does my laundry, I cannot wear the clothes or sleep on the sheets, brings on the allergies and burns my skin.

I keep the radio on all night long, each & every night, and I have, ever since 9/10/2001 --- I keep BBC World Service on in the background --- and if something major happens anywhere on the globe, I wake up, because the BBC announcers & news readers immediately sound so very different.

I hear plenty of stuff on NPR early in the morning after BBC goes off the air, and before I'm inclined to get up and turn off the radio.

Not EVERYTHING on NPR is vile, I actually frequently listen to Marketplace -- the other morning there was a very interesting segment about Oklahoma, that unemployment is VERY VERY VERY low in Oklahoma, due to a couple factors. First, the entire populations seems to remember the Droughty Dirty 30s, Oklahoma was Ground Zero for plenty of massive dust storms; and secondly because there was a mini "oil boom" and subsequent crash during the 1980s - and thus there really weren't any people in Oklahoma who ever got particularly excited about the housing bubble.

There's plenty of similar interesting stuff available on NPR, but I don't listen to any of theie political stuff, nor any of the artsy stuff - pretty much just economics and breaking news. I don't need patience for that.

LOL, My telepathic wife told me...

Seriously - She keeps telling me things about subjects I was thinking about but haven’t said a word about. Then there is the waking me in the middle of the night to tell me that our outside dog has burned his water over and is thirsty, and that I need to call Daughter because something is wrong - like yesterday evening when one of her dogs got loose and was hit on the road. LOL It assures no Jimmy Carter transgressions - that’s for sure.

LOL!

I wasn't criticising your listening to NPR. Just saying I couldn't do it. We do need to see what the other side is saying, but I'm not the one to do it! I'd have a broken radio or TV.

That's interesting about OK. It's on the top of my list of places to relocate to. It's one of the most conservative states we have, voting R in the 2008 elections more than any other. Not that all the R's are conservative, but it's still telling. And they had some great anti-illegal alien legislation passed and not shot down by an activist judge as well. So they know how to do it right, and not just play games.

Well, I suppose I should admit to you that I currently have NO patience for TV, not any TV, even the commercials make me very irritable -- I think it's REALLY important, absolutely imperative, during dangerous times like this to actively REDUCE stressors -- things are bad, but STRESS reduces one capability to deal with it all. Television stresses me out unduly, so I've pulled the plug on it, LOL.

During the day, the Net keeps me up to date on breaking news, and overnight, I keep the radio tuned to BBC World Service.
