Weekly Roundup - Living On Nothing Edition Category: Roundups | Comments(15)

Did you hear about the guy that lives on nothing? No seriously, he lives on zero dollars a day. Meet Daniel Suelo, who lives in a cave outside Moab, Utah. Suelo has no mortgage, no car payment, no debt of any kind. He also has no home, no car, no television, and absolutely no “creature comforts.” But he does have a lot of creatures, as in the mice and bugs that scurry about the cave floor he’s called home for the last three years.

To us, Suelo probably sounds a little extreme. Actually, he probably sounds very extreme. After all, I suspect most of you reading this are doing so under the protection of some sort of man-made shelter, and with some amount of money on your person, and probably a few needs for money, too. And who doesn’t need money unless they have completely unplugged from the grid? Still, it’s an amusing story about a guy who rejects all forms of consumerism as we know it.

Dr. Mercola says it’s important to take “Vitamin D-3” during flu season. I see it’s sold at Sam’s Club. I think it’s different from plain Vitamin D.

Also, the price of turmeric capsules has gone up up up. I buy those at WalMart, and the bottle is now much smaller and cost me $7 the other day, turmeric capsules are said to be good for the immune system too.

And while I’m on the subject, I use the NeilMed sinus cleanse system too, woohoo, feels like you’re swimming in the ocean and just got knocked down by a wave ... I hear tell some diehards even add a couple drops of iodine to the sinus rinse ... and some buy two of the rinsers, double-fisted sinus rinse, one for each side ... available at Walgreen’s or WalMart ... better make sure you aren’t allergic to iodine before you try adding it.

Salut, good health!

Questions & Answers
Opening and Mixing Tamiflu® Capsules with Liquids if Child Cannot Swallow Capsules

October 19, 2009 4:30 PM ET

Is there a shortage of oral suspension (liquid) Tamiflu®?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the maker of Tamiflu® (Roche Adobe PDF fileExternal Web Site Icon) have said that available supplies of liquid Tamiflu® for children are limited.
What is being done about this?

There are child doses of Tamiflu® in capsules and it is also possible for a pharmacist to create a liquid children’s dose using adult doses of Tamiflu®. CDC is alerting pharmacists, doctors, and parents about these options.
What can I do if my child cannot swallow capsules?

If your doctor prescribes Tamiflu® capsules for your child and your child cannot swallow capsules, Tamiflu® capsules may be opened and mixed with sweetened liquids, such as regular or sugar-free chocolate syrup and given that way.
If my child can’t swallow capsules, how do I open Tamiflu capsules and mix the medicine?

Carefully open the Tamiflu® capsule and mix the powder inside the capsule with regular or sugar-free chocolate syrup. Use only the prescribed dose.
What will I need to do this?

You will need

* The Tamiflu® capsule
* A small bowl or cup and a spoon
* Regular or sugar-free chocolate syrup.

How do I mix the ingredients?

* Holding one capsule over a small bowl, carefully pull the capsule open and pour the complete contents of the capsule into the bowl.
* Add a small amount of a sweetened liquid such as chocolate syrup (regular or sugar-free) that the child will consume completely.
* Stir the mixture and give the entire dose to the child.

Should my child take all of the mixture?

Yes, make sure your child takes all of the medicine mixture.

WELCOME BACK GRANNY!!! WE MISSED YOU!!!

Just got an email from Bruce Hopkins of internet-grocer.net

“I can’t vouch for the validity of this, but—if it’s true—it’s good info:

Dr. Vinay Goyal is an MBBS,DRM,DNB (Intensivist and Thyroid specialist) having clinical experience of
over 20 years. He has worked in institutions like Hinduja Hospital, Bombay Hospital, Saifee Hospital ,
Tata Memorial etc.. Presently, he is heading our Nuclear Medicine Department and Thyroid clinic at
Riddhivinayak Cardiac and Critical Centre, Malad (W).

The following message given by him, I feel makes a lot of sense and is important for all to know:

The only portals of entry for the H1N1 virus are the nostrils and mouth/throat. In a global epidemic of
this nature, it’s almost impossible to avoid coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions.
Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is.

While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent
proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps,
not fully highlighted in most official communications, can be practiced (instead of focusing on how to
stock N95 or Tamiflu):

1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications)..

2. “Hands-off-the-face” approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to
eat, bathe or slap).

3. Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don’t trust salt). H1N1 takes 2-3 days
after initial infection in the throat/ nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms.
Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a
healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don’t underestimate this simple, inexpensive and
powerful preventative method.

4. Similar to 3 above, clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. Blowing the
nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very
effective in bringing down viral population.

5. Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C. If you have to supplement with
Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.

6. Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can. Drinking warm liquids has the same
effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat
into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.”

[Sounds logical, practical, effective..... DW]

Note to Joya: Growing up we used to have a dedicated enema bag that was used just for nasal washes... Warm water with a spoonfull of iodized salt... As a youngster I hated it, but it sure did work...

Here is The Emergency in Waiting :

from Fox News ( you know, the other guys)

Study: H1N1 Vaccine Too Late, Won’t Help Most

The H1N1 vaccine will arrive too late to help most Americans who will be infected during this flu season, according to a study conducted by scholars at Purdue University, The Washington Times reported on Tuesday.

The study also estimates that the virus — commonly referred to as the swine flu bug — will infect about 60 percent of the U.S. population, although only about 25 percent of Americans will fall ill.

FDA NEWS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: Oct. 19, 2009

Media Inquiries: Christopher Kelly, 301-796-4676 christopher.kelly@fda.hhs.gov
Consumer Inquiries: 888-INFO-FDA
FDA, FTC Issue Joint Warning Letter to Web Site Offering Fraudulent H1N1 Flu Supplements
Agencies continue effort to protect public health from illegal Web activity

On October 15, 2009, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) issued a joint warning letter to a Web site marketing fraudulent supplements that claim to help prevent the spread of the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus.

The warning letter, the first to be issued jointly by the agencies, advises the owners of the site that they must discontinue the fraudulent marketing of their product or face legal action. The letter further advises the owners of the site that they have 48 hours to give the agencies a plan to discontinue their fraudulent marketing.

The FDA and the FTC remind consumers to be cautious of promotions or Internet sites offering products for sale that claim to diagnose, prevent, mitigate, treat or cure the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus. Fraudulent H1N1 influenza products come in many varieties, including dietary supplements, as well as products purporting to be drugs, medical devices or vaccines. Since May 2009, the FDA has warned more than 75 Web sites to stop the sale of more than 135 products with fraudulent H1N1 influenza virus claims.

“Products that are offered for sale with claims to diagnose, prevent, mitigate, treat or cure the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus must be carefully evaluated,” said Commissioner of Food and Drugs Margaret A. Hamburg, M.D. “Unless these products are proven to be safe and effective for the claims that are made, it is not known whether they will prevent the transmission of the virus or offer effective remedies against infection. Furthermore, they can make matters worse by providing consumers with a false sense of protection.”

The FDA and the FTC also warn consumers to take extreme care when buying products over the Internet that claim to diagnose, prevent, treat or cure the H1N1 influenza virus because, in addition to being fraudulent, they could be dangerous.

In collaboration with the FTC, the FDA will continue to work aggressively to identify, investigate and take regulatory action against individuals or businesses that wrongfully promote purported 2009 H1N1 influenza products.

This will include taking joint action, when appropriate, such as the issuance of last Thursday’s warning letter. Additional legal action could include an injunction or issuance of an administrative order by the FTC or seizure of products, an injunction or criminal prosecution by the FDA.

“The FDA continues to consider the sale and promotion of fraudulent H1N1 influenza products to be a possible threat to the public health and in violation of the Federal Food Drug and Cosmetic Act,” said Michael Chappell, acting associate commissioner for regulatory affairs. “The FDA has an aggressive surveillance program to detect fraudulent H1N1-related products and will take prompt action to stop the marketing of fraudulent H1N1 influenza products and will hold those who are responsible for doing so accountable.”

To view the warning letters, visit: http://www.fda.gov/ICECI/EnforcementActions/WarningLetters/2009/default.htm.

There are two antiviral drugs approved by the FDA for treatment and prophylaxis of the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus – Tamiflu (oseltamivir phosphate) and Relenza (zanamivir). Tamiflu and Relenza, in addition to their approved labeling, have been issued Emergency Use Authorizations by the FDA that describe specific authorized uses during this public health emergency.

H1N1 Flu Fraud Widget

This week, the FDA enhanced its efforts to warn the public about potentially deceptive H1N1 influenza products and to report suspected criminal activity with the release of an H1N1 flu fraud widget.

The portable application, embedded in a Web page that can be copied onto any other Web site or blog, will allow the public to play an active role in preventing flu fraud, and is available at http://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/PublicHealthFocus/ucm186340.htm

Consumers are urged to report any suspected fraudulent products or criminal activity relating to FDA-regulated products associated with H1N1 influenza virus, including the names of Web sites that may be offering these products for sale, to the FDA by visiting: http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/email/oc/oci/flucontact.cfm

Consumers are urged to purchase and consume only FDA-approved or authorized medical products to diagnose, treat, prevent, or cure infections caused by the H1N1 virus. Consumers also are urged to contact their health care provider if they have any questions or concerns about medical products or personal protective equipment.

Recall — Firm Press Release

FDA posts press releases and other notices of recalls and market withdrawals from the firms involved as a service to consumers, the media, and other interested parties. FDA does not endorse either the product or the company.

Plum Organics Voluntarily Recalls Select Batch of
Apple & Carrot Portable Pouches Due to Potential Health Risk

Contact:
Kate Sobel
Email: press@plumorganics.com
Phone: 646.416.6446

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - October 19, 2009 - Emeryvillle, CA - Plum Organics ™ announced today that it is taking the precautionary measure of voluntarily recalling one particular batch of its 4.22oz. Apple & Carrot Portable Pouch baby food with the best by date May 21, 2010 and marked with the following universal product code (UPC) #890180001221 located on the bottom of the package. These pouches are sold individually at Toys-R-Us and Babies-R-Us locations nationally.

No illnesses have been reported in connection with this product and no other Plum Organics products are affected. As a further precaution, samples from every Plum Organics product manufactured before and after this batch were tested and found to be within quality standards.

The recall was undertaken as a precaution due to the risk of potential contamination with Clostridium botulinum, which can cause botulism, a serious and sometimes lifethreatening condition. Consumers should not use these products, even if they appear to be normal, because of the possible health risk. Symptoms of botulism poisoning in humans include general weakness, dizziness, double-vision and trouble with speaking or swallowing. People experiencing these problems should seek immediate medical attention.

“The product did not meet the FDA guidelines for proper acidity level,” said Dr. Paul Gerhardt, a Food Science Ph.D. and member of the Plum Organics action team. “Though the risk of illness from this one batch is minimal, Plum Organics is taking the extraordinary step of recalling all Apple & Carrot Baby Food Pouches with best by date May 21, 2010.”

“As a mother, the safety and satisfaction of our customers and their children is my highest concern,” said Plum Organics Founder Gigi Lee Chang. Due to a mixing error during production, one batch of this product was improperly blended. As a result, it did not meet our company’s standard for quality. We are taking the extra step of recalling all Apple & Carrot Portable Pouches with this date to eliminate any question in the minds of consumers about the safety of our products. Plum Organics was founded on the vision of superior quality and nutritious baby food; we are committed to these values and our consumers.”

Consumers who have purchased the Plum Organics Apple & Carrot pouch-based baby food with a best by date May 21, 2010 and with the UPC # 890180001221 can return the product for a full refund at any Toys-R-Us or Babies-R-Us store.

The recall is being undertaken with the knowledge of the U.S. Food & Drug Administration.

Consumers with any questions are asked to call 888-974-3555 between the hours of 8 am – 5 pm PST, or email info@plumorganics.com.

David Kaiser is a respected historian<<<

He is a good writer and he gets the same messages that I have dug up in the last couple days.

I don’t know that I can put it into words, but for several days I have been digging into the nazi era and the one message that I got out of it, was that today is the nazi dream coming true.

Hitler said that his grandchildren would rule the world and the ‘o’ appears to be on a roll to do so.

Most/many muslims are communist, hitler was also, before he formed his nazi party, the muslims also supported the nazi party during WW2, so we have a war that we are attempting to win, against all 3 groups and they are wrapped into one, with the threads of history.

Most of the world is feeling the fear of things to come.

Being frugal in England is now common, many articles are published about it, as they were in WW2, things like altering clothing, to make something new.

I remember my mother making skirts out of men’s suit pants, they were often a good fabric, better than we could afford to buy and did not require the War Defense coupons for clothing, if bought in a thrift store or you could be lucky enough to have a pair given to you.

The WW2 foods we have looked at.

There is a lot of good reading in this search:

http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=subject%3A%22secret%22&page=6

Another source of old info, several on eugenics, a gift to us from the nazi’s and other odd info, if you dig around, the message files are open, I think, if not do join, for it is dying, he went to the twitter crap and quit posting to the group. There are many thousands of old posts in the files.

Yes, he may be a lefty, after all he is in europe, I think, but in the several years that i have been with the group, many of his posts were posts that were not going to be read in our papers and should be.

Yes, dark times are here and we don’t even know who our enemy is.

Your post was a very good one, will need to see what else he has written.

This is kinda the middle of the search, as is the one above, so I wouldn’t loose them IF I crashed and I did crash, so glad I can start in the middle next time.

NOTE: The following was based on 1999 prices - You will need to increase the plan to $10.00 now to come close to meeting the goal. Also note that this is an absolute minimal diet to last one year - rationing would be extreme, and you may want to substitute other items. Cream of Mushroom and Tomato Soup is not really a great diet, I would make some changes. DW<<<

Better make that $20. a week in Arizona, we are getting to the breaking point on everything.

My presciptions are now up another hundred dollars a month and that is my breaking point, meds? food? cat food? or live under a tree and carry on.

I can’t even imagine what the jobless are thinking, being homeless is a small part of the problem.

And the cities run them off, for their tents do not make the town look good.

Scary times, indeed.

We have to keep in mind that we are currently one crop failure away from mass starvation across the globe. Added to that is the projected global population growth that is increasing rapidly.<<<<

Agree.........

Hope we hear from Granny soon and find her absence is due to another computer glitch.<<<

Call it a granny glitch, a bit under the weather.

Glad you are stocking up.

Thanks for caring and missing me.

Just tried finding Granny’s phone # - tried it several times and keep getting busy signal. Could be she is online (which I hope is the case) or it could be something wrong.....<<<

The computer is hooked to that line, 24 hours a day, I have had the number over 30 years and all that I get are folks selling things, so do not answer it if it does ring.

I will try to send the cell number, if I forget, remind me.

LOL, I was sure that by now, Joe would have to resign for his health.......he lasted longer than I expected, for he keeps slipping up and uttering the truth.

This breaks the old record of 31 set in 1948.<<<

As I recall it, 1948 was a bad weather year, I think there is still a photo of us kids playing in the hail, it was about a foot deep and about 1948, this was in the San Diego area.

A thought, after WW1, they said the battle fields were fields of blooming Poppies, as the shells bursting shocked the seeds into blooming.

Grandpa says when we shoot off stuff into space, we change the weather.

Now our weather does not know if it is hot or cold and we have space ships coming and going and even set off blasts on the moon, to say nothing of the jihadi wars and bombs that go off daily.

Guess the weather no longer surprises me, and I no longer trust scientists and LOL politicians.

Have you read the FR thread concerning the Dept of Justice impersonating reporters at a news conference by Sheriff Joe in Ariz? What are we coming to when the DOJ does things like this?<<<

I didn’t read this, but knew the ‘o’ had made a new law that says you cannot ask if they are an illegal, until after they are arrested and in the jails.

LOL, Sheriff Joe, intends to keep on with his program of arresting illegals, shouldn’t be hard for him to do, as we all break laws that we do not even know exist...........
