Weekly Roundup - Living On Nothing Edition Category: Roundups | Comments(15)
Did you hear about the guy that lives on nothing? No seriously, he lives on zero dollars a day. Meet Daniel Suelo, who lives in a cave outside Moab, Utah. Suelo has no mortgage, no car payment, no debt of any kind. He also has no home, no car, no television, and absolutely no creature comforts. But he does have a lot of creatures, as in the mice and bugs that scurry about the cave floor hes called home for the last three years.
To us, Suelo probably sounds a little extreme. Actually, he probably sounds very extreme. After all, I suspect most of you reading this are doing so under the protection of some sort of man-made shelter, and with some amount of money on your person, and probably a few needs for money, too. And who doesnt need money unless they have completely unplugged from the grid? Still, its an amusing story about a guy who rejects all forms of consumerism as we know it.

If I am outside, no matter what nasty chore I may be doing, my spirits are high, but keep me in for any length of time and I get very depressed. My better half of 60 plus years recognized this long, long ago and found life was much easier for him when I wasn’t depressed. Consequently, we usually do inside chores together, so I can get outside for longer periods each day. In the winter, if house bound for several days, as I get quieter and quieter, he suggests a walk in the woods and miraculously, my foul mood disappears. Best and cheapest anti-depressant ever!!
This is one time I think we are just as well off without a kitty around to worry about. We have always had one or more cats and our last one died, 17 yrs. old, after we moved. Living in the country is dangerous for cats and sometimes they slip out of the house. I miss her and every so often have a sense of her being around. I am amused when there is talk of hungry poor people eating pet food. Cats are so finicky and dogs can be choosy also and pleasing them is not so cheap. We buy regular dog food and mix it half and half with senior weight control dog food.
I’m sorry about the loss of your kitty. 17 years is a good long life. I had a Siamese mix that was 17 put to sleep about a year ago - she had been a loyal companion for 14 years (we got her when she and my son were both 3). It’s hard to lose a furry friend.
I agree about the country and cats! I’m in the mountains right now where we have a small cabin. I took the 5 cats with me and the former stray is constantly wanting out at night! I keep telling him he’s not in the city anymore and night time is predator time. I try to let him out during the day - and he will roll in the black mountain dirt (presumably to rid himself of his scent) and then cower at the door.
I worry about my furkids when TSHTF, though. I guess they can do mouse elimination to earn their keep!
Where in the country are you? I probably missed your posting about it. I would love to move somewhere better....
I can relate to needing to be outside. It’s sad that so many people (myself included until about 15 years ago) are surrounded by city life and don’t even see nature unless they travel long distances. If they even do it then. I’m glad my husband introduced me to camping and the outside world (my mother and sisters thought shopping was the best hobby - yuk!).
I bought myself some snowshoes on sale at the end of last winter just so I could get outside this winter and see the beauty of the pine branches laden with snow. The red fir trees almost look like they are covered with lace, the way the snow sits on their clusters of needles. Anyway, I hear that cabin fever is pretty rampant up here where the snow will be covering the windows on the 2 sides of the house. The back windows will be clear as long as I shovel the snow off the back deck. So, going outside often will be imperative!

10. Orange Spice Potpourri
Posted by: “SAHM35
Orange Spice Potpourri
This recipe uses 1 pound of each ingredient and will make about 52 snack
size Ziploc bags. Cost: $55.00 = $1.06 per bag.
* 1 pound Orange peel (Dime Size)
* 1/2 pound Lemon peel (Dime Size)
* 1 pound Whole Star Anise
* 1 pound Small Cinnamon Sticks (1 inch)
* 1 pound Whole Allspice
* 1 pound Whole Cloves
* 4 ounces Fixative Orris root, Cellulose Fixative
* 1-2 ounce bottle with dropper of Orange, Cinnamon, or Christmas
Oils.
If making a small amount, use a jar. If making a larger amount, use
something that you don’t mind having the aroma in forever. When I make this
orange spice potpourri, I use a plastic shoe box container. When finished I can
put my craft supplies in it and whenever I open it I get the most wonderful
aroma.
Mix together all ingredients except the oil. After mixing, add the oil by
dropping it onto the potpourri. Trying to get as much as possible of the
oil on the fixative. Continue to mix as you drop the oil into the potpourri.
Use 1/2 of the oil. Check the aroma by smelling 2 or 3 days later; you can
always decide to add more oil.
Let the orange spice potpourri sit for 2 to 3 weeks in a cool dark spot.
Stirring every couple days. When finished bag up and label. I use Ziploc
snack bags and make labels using address labels on my computer.
Remember you can make as little or as much as you want with the recipe
above — just add and adjust to your liking.

14. Kitten Milk
Posted by: “SAHM35
Homemade _K_ (http://recipesforcat.blogspot.com/2007/04/kitten-milk.html)
itten Milk
You can use this kitten milk substitute to successfully hand-rear baby
felines
13 ounces unflavored Pedialyte
12 ounces goat milk
8 ounces plain live culture yogurt
2-1/2 ounces lamb baby food
2 egg yolks
2 tablespoons Karo white corn syrup
Put all ingredients into a blender and mix well. Put kitten milk into
Nurse-Maid pet nursing bottle (found at Wal-Mart) and heat to lukewarm. Test on
the inside of your wrist. Be sure to stir the milk in the container each
time before you refill the bottle. Put remaining kitten milk into 8 ounce
containers and freeze until needed. Two-week-old kittens will drink about 1/2
ounce every 4 hours. Four-week-old kittens will drink about 1 to 1-1/2
ounces every five hours.
Orphaned Kitten Formula
Keep this kitten milk recipe handy for feeding orphaned kittens in an
emergency
1 can goat’s milk
1 cup Pedialyte (or generic equivalent, unflavored)
1 egg yolk
1 packet unflavored gelatin
1/2 teaspoon liquid infant vitamins
Blend together. Heat small amounts in microwave to “wrist comfortable”
temperature immediately before administering. Store leftovers in refrigerator
no longer than 72 hours. Blend before serving each time.
To administer kitten milk, use a syringe without needle or use a kitten
feeding bottle. Start with small amounts and work up gradually as kitten
grows. Administer kitten milk once every two hours during first two weeks,
every three during third week, every four during fourth week. During fourth
week, start blending a small can of high quality ground kitten food into the
mixture.
Note: Never feed a kitten cow’s milk or human baby formula as this causes
stomach upset and severe diarrhea. If a kitten is already dehydrated, this
could prove fatal. This includes condensed/evaporated canned cow’s milk!

15. Kitty Glop
Posted by: “SAHM35
Kitty Glop
Popularly known as “Kitty Glop” among breeders, it is packed with
nutrition for orphaned kittens, nursing mother cats and their babies, cats
recuperating from illness, and older cats who need nutritional supplementing or who
have difficulty eating because of dental or gum problems.
8 oz evaporated goat milk or coconut milk
2 egg yolks (no whites)
2 tablespoons mayonnaise
2 tablespoons plain live culture yogurt,
1 teaspoon Karo syrup. Honey can be used in an emergency but Karo is
preferred (use the clear karo).
1 teaspoon Nutradrops or other liquid pet vitamins
*optional if needed,-1/2 teaspoon of acidophilus or 1 gram of Bene-Bac pet
gel (premeasures in grams)
For older kittens (past the weaning stage) and cats, to be used as a
supplement or weight gain or while under stress from or preparing to show, add:
1/16 teaspoon of vitamin c in powder form
1 teaspoon of powdered kelp (this really doesn’t dissolve very well)
1 tablespoon of brewers yeast
* optional- 10 drops of Larch (A Bach Flower)- this helps build confidence
but works over a period of time as a build up effect.
To prepare kitty glop, pull out a clean blender and a saucepan. In the
saucepan add 1 Cup (8 ounces) of water. Once the water begins to boil,
dissolve1 packet of unflavored knox gelatin, and remove from heat. Stir the
gelatin until all has dissolved. Once the gelatin has dissolved completely, mix
into a blender with the following:
Refrigerate kitty glop in a covered dish until completely chilled like
jello. Scoop out the amount you need, warm to room temp...be careful not to
overheat and then burn the kittens tongue. I use a coffee cup filled with hot
tap water for several minutes. Place the syringe filled with the glop down
into the water, keeping the tip closed on the syringe....this works best
with pre-filled glop syringes.
Kitty glop becomes jelled when cold. Once the glop is warmed, it appears
to be milk. Discard whatever amount is warmed and left over, and never
return the unused portion back to the main supply bowl.

occasionally until it boils and until soap dissolves. Lower heat and simmer
for 10 minutes to thoroughly combine the ingredients. Remove from heat and
let liquid partially cool, add the essential oil and stir. Pour into a clean
plastic squeeze bottle or re-used dish soap bottle.
Mix the washing soda and the borax and store in a plastic covered
container. To use, add 2 tablespoons to the dishwasher soap compartment.

*To loosen baked-on food from pots and pans, immediately add some baking
soda and wait 15 minutes before you’ve had a chance to add baking soda, boil
a solution of 1 cup water, 5 drops cedar or other essential oil, and 3
tablespoons. baking soda directly in the pot or pan. Allow the mixture to
stand until the food can be scraped off easily.

Automatic Dishwasher Soap
1 Tablespoon Borax
1 Tablespoon Baking soda
Mix the washing soda and the borax and store in a plastic covered
container. To use, add 2 tablespoons to the dishwasher soap compartment. If you
have hard water, you may want to use the Spotless Dishwasher Rinse, below.
Spotless Dishwasher Rinse
1 to 1 1/2 cups white vinegar added to the rinse compartment of your
dishwasher will do! Don’t overfill. Add before washing. Also helps with odors
from your dishwasher
Is your dishwasher dirty and grimy? Make sure the dishwasher is completely
empty. Add “Tang” drink crystals where you would normally place dishwasher
detergent. Run with “light” cycle. Your dishwasher will be spotless! Do
this about twice a year.

I simply mixed borax with cheap maple syrup and spread it around where I saw the ants. They went nuts eating it all up, but within days they were all gone.

Our son had something that looked like ringworm and was treated for it by a doc. However, it didn’t go away. We ended up seeing another doc who diagnosed it as something else and treated it with tiny cortizone injections around the site. I can’t remember what it was called, but the doctor recognized it from a dermatology class he had. He said they don’t know what causes it and it only appears on the “tops” of your arms, legs, feet. They went away after the treatment. I will ask my son what it is called. We’ll see him this weekend.
Hubby decided he could get off of work tomorrow, so we are throwing some stuff in the car and heading for DC tomorrow. We will stay with our son in PA tomorrow night and head into DC Saturday morning. He said he may go with us. I hope I can survive the trip. I did too much in the garden yesterday pulling out plants and such and messed up my back/hip. Will see the chiropractor in the morning before we leave. If I’d a known we were going, I would have skipped ripping plants out and such.
” I wonder why so many directions for freezing or canning tomatoes have us skin them first.”
The first time I froze tomatoes I didn’t take the skins off. When I threw them into a pot of stew and they thawed out all the peels came off and curled up. They were kind of tough and we ended up picking them out. After that, I started taking the skins off before freezing.

For easy fried apple rings, cut apple slices 1/2 inch thick. Dip slices into sugar. Melt butter in a pan and fry the rings until tender, about 10 minutes.
Serve apple slices as a snack with caramel dip or peanut butter dip. Use our Recipe Finder to locate easy recipes, or just combine peanut butter with a little honey and add raisins, nuts or mini chocolate chips.
Don’t forget apples when you make a smoothie. Place peeled and chopped apple in a blender along with apple juice, cinnamon, your favorite flavor of frozen yogurt and, if you wish, bananas or other fruit.
Add thinly sliced apples to a sandwich or apple chunks to a salad. You can make a simple salad of chopped apple, walnuts and cheese cubes. Then drizzle with lemon juice.
Sliced apples freeze well if properly prepared. Peel and slice the apples, then drop into Fruit Fresh or lemon juice to keep them from discoloring. Place the slices in boiling water for 2 minutes, then cool in ice water for 2 minutes. Drain.
Pack slices into plastic freezer bags in the amounts needed for your favorite recipes. Seal, label and freeze. If you need diced or chopped apples, cut the slices after they’re defrosted. Now you can keep sliced or diced apples through the winter for use in breads, muffins and pies.
To keep peeled apple slices from turning brown, sprinkle on a bit of lemon juice, lime juice or lemon-lime soda. Keep them in a resealable plastic bag in the refrigerator for a quick snack.
When making apple pie or other treats with fresh apples, use the small end of a melon baller to neatly and easily scoop out the core from halved apples, suggests Helen Nagy of Sun City Center, Florida.

Greek Yogurt Cheesecake with Ouzo-Poached Figs
This tangy yogurt cheesecake is topped with ouzo-poached figs inspired by sikomaida, a traditional delicacy from Corfu made with dried figs macerated and kneaded with ouzo (an anise-flavored spirit) and pepper, which are formed into disks and dried in chestnut leaves. Its also delicious with seasonal fruits, fresh or dried and poached, or with whole preserves.
Serves: 16
Preparation time: 40 minutes
Ingredients
for the crust:
15 plain Melba toasts (about 4 ounces; not Melba snacks)
1/3 cup walnut halves
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
2 tablespoons sugar
For the cheesecake:
14 ounces reduced-fat (Neufchâtel) cream cheese
1 cup sugar
2-1/2 cups low-fat or nonfat plain Greek yogurt
7 large egg whites
1 teaspoon cinnamon
For the topping:
16 whole dried figs
2 cups warm water
1/2 cup ouzo, Mavrodaphne or port wine
2 rose geranium leaves, plus more for garnish
1 cinnamon stick
1 3-inch strip orange zest
1/2 cup sugar
Preparation
To prepare crust:
1. Preheat oven to 325°F. Put a kettle of water on to heat for the water bath. Coat a 10-inch springform pan with cooking spray; tightly wrap the bottom and outside with a double layer of foil.
2. Process Melba toasts and walnuts in a food processor until fine crumbs form. Transfer to a medium bowl. Add oil and 2 tablespoons sugar and toss until evenly moist. Press the crumb mixture into the bottom of the pan. Bake until lightly browned, about 10 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack and let cool to room temperature, about 30 minutes.
To prepare cheesecake:
1. When the crust is almost cool, beat cream cheese and 1 cup sugar in a large mixing bowl with an electric mixer until smooth. Add yogurt, egg whites and cinnamon; beat until well blended. Pour the batter over the cooled crust.
2. Place the cheesecake in a roasting pan and pour in enough boiling water to come 1 inch up the outside of the springform pan. Bake the cheesecake in the center of the oven until set around the edges but the center still jiggles, about 45 minutes. Turn off the oven and let the cheesecake sit in the oven with the door ajar for 1 hour. Let cool on a wire rack for 1 hour more.
To prepare topping:
1. Meanwhile, place figs in a small bowl, cover with warm water and let soak for 1 hour.
2. Strain the figs, reserving the soaking water. Strain the soaking water into a medium saucepan. Add ouzo (or wine); bring to a boil over high heat. Add geranium leaves (if using), cinnamon stick, orange zest and the figs. Reduce the heat to medium and cook until the figs are plump and the liquid is the consistency of a thin syrup, 10 to 15 minutes. Remove the figs with a slotted spoon and set aside to cool. Stir 1/2 cup sugar into the liquid, adjust the heat to maintain a gentle simmer, and cook until the liquid is reduced by half, 15 to 25 minutes. Discard the geranium leaves, cinnamon stick and orange zest. Chop the figs and return them to the syrup.
3. Remove the pan sides from the cheesecake. Serve each slice topped with some of the fig sauce and a rose geranium leaf, if desired.
Enjoy!

“I’m finally realizing that, after decades of accumulating ‘stuff’ that I think I needed. Now, I’m in the process of getting rid of it - and it’s hard to do! I need to remember this when I feel tempted to buy anything again that is not necessary.”
Same here, but I’m finding it’s easier said than done in trying to get rid of stuff. Ran across a show on TV called Hoarders that I started recording. My kids said I’m not like that so why watch it? I told them after watching an episode it inspires me to get up and get rid of stuff so I don’t ever get to be that way. LOL

For a chronic cough that just wont go away after a few days, make sure to see your doctor. You could have more serious issues going on that need to be tended to.
Remember: Honey shouldnt be given to children under 1 years old (risk of infant botulism).
Note: These are simply home remedies Ive collected, theyre not professional medical advice.
[from me....don’t forget the old remedy of Vicks Vapor Rub on the bottom of your feet and place old socks over it to keep it off your bed clothes. ]

God is not mad at you, no matter what!
most coughs can be helped by making the cough productive
ie an expectorant, something to make the mucus expellable.

“Glad you are getting out to your Tea Parties on the Left Coast! “
Illinois almost seems like the Left Coast these past years. Our county has been a Republican area but voted for the 0 this last time around. Not sure if it really changed or they just were sick of Bush and went for the other new guy.
How did your stealth mission work out or haven’t you gone on it yet?
[Not checked, for those of you wanting to know about land in other areas..from a newsletter....granny]
I like to look at Mother Earth News’ site for real estate. there are quite a
few inexpensive, not quite free, parcels available across the country. Just
add your details.....and whala! Listings come up in all shapes, sizes, and
criteria. I’ve found quite a few “By Owner” and “Owner Financing” as well.
Granted many listings are Zone 5 and should stay that way; however, there
are opportunities avail. which have some sort of need for the “Permaculture
touch” by responsible hands.

I see you are up late, Granny. I had to catch up on this thread before leaving for the weekend. It seems there’s so much going on and needing to be done I haven’t been checking in here as often as I’d like. Glad to read upthread that your kitties are doing well.
