Apple today released Safari which is recommended for all Safari users and improves the stability of the Nitro JavaScript engine and includes the latest compatibility and security fixes, including:
• WebKit CVE-ID: CVE-2009-1724
Available for: Mac OS X v10.4.11, Mac OS X Server v10.4.11, Mac OS X v10.5.7, Mac OS X Server v10.5.7, Windows XP or Vista
Impact: Visiting a maliciously crafted website may lead to a cross-site scripting attack
Description: An issue in WebKit's handling of the parent and top objects may result in a cross-site scripting attack when visiting a maliciously crafted website. This update addresses the issue through improved handling of parent and top objects.

the previous version of Safari was the most crash-prone browser of the 5 that I use
I too had an occasional crash of Safari 3 which would, ironically, occur when I was cleaning up my desktop by deleting garbage Safari windows. Which you would have thought would have helped keep it afloat by freeing up RAM. That problem never affected Leopard itself, and was last noticed before I upgraded from 1 Gb to 4 Gb just because I could and it wasn't expensive (getting the RAM from Crucial.com, not Apple, of course).Safari 4 has been very nice in my experience; I don't even recall any real problems with the beta.

There can be other reasons for that, other than Safari, itself. There are those add-ons that can cause problems, in that other programmers have done something that isn’t stable with Safari. So, Safari gets blamed, because that’s what you see crashing, but it was the other programmer’s code doing it... LOL...
There’s that sort of thing.
And then, if you read that certain people have some problems with a certain version while the mass of others using it don’t, then that clues you into the fact that there is something in the way that one person has their computer set up that is causing the problem. That person may not be aware of what they did, or have on their computer, or the way it was set up that is causing it, but that’s usually what it is. There’s a conflict there, somewhere that they’re not aware of.
That Safari is a great little browser. At first (when it first came out), I did not use it regularly, but it grew on me and now I’m using it quite regularly, and only others to check out something that seem to be a problem to see if it’s related specifically to a browser. Safari is great!
Same here. It crashed too much to use and seemed to get slower and less responsive the longer it ran.
Just dl'd the update and using it now. We'll see. It *is* fast, seems faster than FF 3.5 but I'm not sure yet. (Winxp)

I could care less if it is PC or not — but I’ve not been blown away by the performance of my Mac (which I purchased in 11-08). It crashes 1-3 times a week, the new Safari is slow as molasses, and is a pain in my butt. Sometimes I can pull up a webpage and use all the links and buttons, then 2 hours later when I go back to the same page, everything is active. Firefox loads several times faster and is more stable.
That being said, I do like my Mac, but at this point, it is 50/50 as to whether or not I’d replace it with another Mac
I’ve been using Safari 4 for XP and love it...except for the constant crashing. Hopefully this new version fixes the stability.

I’m not totally sure I understand exactly how Apple has done this on the Mac OS X system, but I believe that they’ve done something to keep Safari running, and just kick out the offending and interacting program (”code”) that attempts to modify or work with Safari.
I believe Apple can do that in the Mac OS X system, but I don’t believe that the Microsoft system has that capability.
So, it may very well be that the Safari program may appear to be having a lot more problems on the Microsoft system, because of that inability to kick out the offending code that interferes with the proper operation of Safari, using that Microsoft system...
I’m using Safari right now. It seems very fast.
For some reason there are a few sites that do not render text boxes correctly.
Text overwrites other text or pics.
I don’t know why.
Downloaded the new version and, after ~ 1 hour, it seems faster and has not crashed...yet.
Crossing fingers & toes as safari is MUCH more user friendly than IE8.
Thanks I just did the upgrade.....Safari was really slow yesterday and I have had problems with it quitting on me so I hope the upgrade helps....
What is your Model and amount of RAM, SoftballMominVA? Crashing 1-3 times a week is definitely atypical for Mac users. Can you isolate what you are doing when the crash occurs. Is it a full system crash (everything locked or kernel panic) or just an application crash? The slowness of Safari is also very atypical. I'm thinking you may have a RAM problem, which is not unheard of.
Windows or Mac? Which version? The new rendering engine should have prevent the text overwrites. Safari 4 offers the ability to zoom the page, including graphics, while keeping the formating and relative sizes of screen elements...
As far as what kind of crash it is — it's the kind where the little rainbow wheel comes up and the mouse, keyboard and touchpad are unresponsive and I have to hold down the start button for 10 seconds to restart.
I've taken it in to the Mac bar 3 times and each time they seem to find some little thing that needs to be updated or some tweak. What ends up happening is that my Mac does what it wants to do it seems and I just live with the problem. It's no worse than my old PC, but certainly not better.
In fact, it locked up as I was doing this post a few minutes ago. At the time I had FR open and Drudge and a Flicker page. Seized up, shut down, and restart.....same ol, same ol.
Any suggestions, I'm happy to take them
Mac, Leopard 10.5.7, the latest Safari 4.0.2 .
I was just shopping for a cell phone and had to switch to Firefox in order to read the prices because they were co- mingled with the descriptions.
I had similar problems with my iBook. The problem turned out to be my ISP. New ISP; problem solved.
