Sarah is now unelectable on a national stage. The quitter specter will hang around her neck like swimmer does to Ted Kennedy.
Youll be able to spot the realistic, clear thinking conservatives because they see and admit this early so we can put it behind us get on with identifying the candidates who can win in 12.
BTW - This doesnt rule out a tangential private career ala Newt or a run for a House or Senate seat (although I dont know where at this point) but as a national candidate she is toast.
That so many conservatives cant see this is one of the reasons we lose so often...in campaigns and ideology.
Its quite sad but something Ive learned to live with. At one point I thought the conservative cause in this country could be galvanized around solid principles, sober and realistic goals and turned into an effective winning strategy and movement. But Ive come to realize too many voluntarily ignore the ugly realities of politics and put their faith in Hail Mary passes, and frankly, are just too lazy for the time and effort needed to bring this country back to where they profess they want it to be.
We’ll see Bob. I’m taking her at her word.
I disagree with that.
Newt has always been a pragmatist, and he figured out, unlike other Republicans, that if you don’t offer alternatives to the Democrats’ environmental policies, then they will get their policies passed in full. The political process works under the Hegelian Dialectic: thesis, antithesis, synthesis. If no antithesis is offered, then the thesis is not subject to synthesis.
Newt sat on that couch with Nancy Pelosi not to endorse her proposals, but to offer his own counter-proposals. Newt has offered cost-neutral free-market alternatives to Cap’n Tax.
And 50% of Republicans believe in Global Warming to some degree. John McCain, who is a full fledged, true believer in Global Warming and a proponent of Cap’n Tax managed to get the GOP nomination. So there is no reason to think that Newt’s common sense alternatives to the Democrats’ plans would penalize him in the GOP primaries, much less end his run.
In the end she wasn't Joan of Arc, she was a bright, talented, refreshing possibility, but with four children and a new baby to protect from the destroyers.
I sat with my mouth open during her speech, but now I'm relieved she's taken the target off her back.
Lisa Murkowski is extremely popular in Alaska.
The popularity figures are correct. 70% approval for her rating vs. Sarah Palin’s 54% (and dropping). Look it up.
So for anyone who thinks Sarah’s future might include a primary challenge for Murkowski’s Senate seat, think again.
Sarah quit the governorship because she’s quitting Alaska.
Packing up the Dude and kids to seek out her fortune in Washington, D.C.
The Ultimate Outsider has wanted to become an insider ever since she got bitten by the national politics bug when she signed on with McCain. She won’t be going there to run for office though. There are lots of lucrative options for a former pol there, especially one that is a hot commodity.
#1 - She gave no indication that she is running for President.
#2 - She is putting Alaska and the taxpayers AHEAD of her ambitions, that's called integrity.
You've made several very, very good points. But, like you, I just don't think Gingrich can do it given his "growing" stature, physical not intellectual. Plus, his personal problems make him a non-starter for the SoCons.
I would add Haley Barbour to your very short list. Sure, he comes off initially as a good ole' boy, but he is equally as intellectual as Gingrich, without the personal problems. And, yes he was a lobbyist. But, it's been less than 6 months into Barry's administration and he has COMPLETELY walked back all his self-imposed exclusions of lobbyists working in his administration. It would be tough to criticize Barbour when he has now surrounded himself with quasi-Wall street lobbyists in his entire economic team.
I'm going to wait until the primaries to pick a horse, as my original pick decided to go on a south-of-the-border love fest. But, with or without Palin, I don't believe things are nearly as dire as some would pretend, or hope.
“The Swimmer” won election after election, let’s hope she is like the Swimmer when it comes to winning elections. Class dismissed.

LOL! I’m sorry! I’ll quit! I’ll quit! :-)
Bears repeating
Bob, what do you think of her chosen to be VP last year is? The last time I looked, the Vice-President is a national office. So she's not good enough to be president but she's good enough to be VP? This is the same faulty logic Hillary used on Obama last year which backfired on her.
Also you conveniently ignore the fact why she resigned. If you had to deal with bogus ethics charges that prevented you from doing your job, what are you going to do? If you fight them, they'll say that you're ignoring you job anyway.
You are correct. The chattering knowthings are the ones who are confused. They don't listen and thus can't understand.
Even though shes just a state governor, shes a HUGE national star who is both sought after and attacked as if she is already a president (a Bush, not an Obama). But she basically cant participate because shes tethered to the governors office up in Alaska. Consequently, she has to fight with one hand tied behind her back and she also cant go around the country campaigning for candidates and principles she believes in because shes governor and would be accused of neglecting the state.
Exactly.
She has placed the state on a firm foundation and the Governor's office in competent hands and has chosen not to collect a paycheck from the Alaskans while she is putting her efforts in another direction. To me that is an honorable and principled decision. And for doing that she is attacked???? Those who accuse her for doing the right thing here are exhibiting their own dearth of principles.
LOL. That's a specious comparison of biblical proportions.
Exactly.
Reagan was also the focus of a smear campaign while serving as governor, and there was one unsuccessful attempt to have him removed. However, back then, people had the decency to focus their attacks on the man and not his family. Nor did Reagan have to endure Palin’s legal battles where she is deluged with frivolous lawsuits designed to distract her and drain her personal finances.
Thanks for the clarification. I'm not in that camp. Eisenhower, Nixon and Reagan all proved that you don't need to be in office. And, I think if Palin just would have announced she wouldn't be seeking a second, she would have been absolutely fine.
But, I can't help but think that the early departure from public office (still 18 months left on her commitment, and only 30 months in office) becomes a tremendous handicap to anyone not already a fervent Palin supporter.
one comes to understand that nothing less than the utter moral destruction of Barack Obama will turn the tide. ...I know of no one but Gingrich who has a chance to do it.You're one of the few I've seen who really gets it. Obama must be taken apart with precision, point by point, with a a scalpel and forceps by a skilled rhetorical surgeon. Only Newt can cut through the politics and BS to do it, and enjoy it while he does.
The correct alternative is to simply tell the truth - that the myth of global warming is nothing but a hoax designed to enrich a few select entities and individuals at enormous expense to the rest of the nation.
As I said on another thread, you don't lay down with the enemy and then pretend you're still a friend. Newt laid down with the enemy.
Sounds like a good reason to NOT be a Republican. Democrat-lite is no way to go through life.
