It seems like every time I venture into an Apple thread here on FR, it's similar to venturing over into Democratic Underground territory.
Personal attacks abound especially if you start criticizing Apple products or other Apple users for being naive into thinking Apple is everything their clever marketing department represents it to be.
It seems like the Mac ping list alerts the faithful flock to defend Apple to the death and that is when the claws come out and it starts to get ugly.
That would not surprise me. I saw a batch of those Star-Tac phones go out with crappy components.
Are you certain it's a "stupid mistake?" They said that exact phrase when Apple dropped floppy drives from the first iMacs back in 1998.
In this instance, uncased, unprotected Li-Poly batteries are dangerous in the wrong hands. Just as, for a similar reason, you cannot user-replace the explosive airbags in the dashboard of your car for safety reasons, Apple has elected to make these batteries non-user replaceable.
In addition, by doing the replacement themselves, they control disposal, getting them greenie points from the environmental wackos that have been beating up on them recently despite the fact that Apple had the best environmental practices in the industry. This fact helped tip the entire MacBook Pro line over into the Epeat Gold rating.
I also know people still using those Star-Tac phones today some 10 years after they bought their phones.
It’s a paradigm shift is all I’m saying.
Speaking of the floppy drive thing, who decided a laptop w/o a CD/DVD was a good idea (The really small Mac laptop)? New ideas are tried, and either they work or they don’t.
I’m not going to get all peevish over it, as long as I can continue to use the really old (286 CPU) machines that drive my test equipment at work. I still use 1.44 MB floppies every day. I need to keep backwards-compatible stuff, while the consumer computer market seems to be on this headlong rush into God knows where.
Ok let's go back in time.... Yeah I would contend that WAS a stupid mistake even with the floppy being a dying technology then. When I bought my Dell Dimension in 2003 it didn't come with a floppy drive. I purchased an aftermarket floppy drive and STILL use it fairly regularly.
As for Apple discontinuing floppy drives, to me that is like Apple giving the finger to the people who, at the time a floppy was part of their daily routine, and Apple is saying, "We are going to tell you a floppy is no longer relevant. Get used to it..." To me that is an arrogant mother f'ing company I never want to have any part of.
and I’ll listen too. :)
I liked mine a lot. Had to ditch it to get a new cell contract. I had a piece of the plastic broken off a corner, and the PC board was exposed, but it worked like a champ. I’m biased, though...I worked for Motorola for many years.
Apple has never kept anyone from doing any sort of repair on their own computers. All they can do is to threaten to void the remaining warranty.
I am a competent technician. When my Macs are out of warranty, I do my own repairs/mods. You claim to be competent: do the same.
It was THE smallest phone back in the day. Hell it was smaller than and of the pre smart phones I have owned.
Hmmm, what company tends to void the warranty when you change a battery? Hmmmm, let me guess Apple, because no other company is stupid enough to pull that crap on their customers.
The only resemblance to DU (are you actually giving that site more hits???) is when the Apple bashers come on the thread and begin attacking all things Apple, with little to no real knowledge, and in most cases - no first-hand knowledge at all. They come in, blow their stack, pick fights, throw insults, call Apple users gay, then post more threads about how bad Apple "fanboys" are... And here we go again.
All three Op Systems are good to me.
{ducking fast}
Failure during normal usage of these batteries would be covered for one year. It would probably be abnormal usage if it fails within the one year.
This point was covered by Apple several years ago on its warranty statement on user-replaceable batteries. Essentially, consumed (depleted) means that the battery will no longer hold a charge in a NORMAL usage pattern. IF the battery fails for other than being consumed in a normal usage pattern, it will be replaced, during the warranty period of the computer.
While you probably could consume one of these batteries in less than a year (there are 1251.43 seven hour periods in a year), the system will keep records of the number of charge/discharge cycles the battery has experienced.
If it no longer holds an 80% charge at less than the 1000 cycle point, then it WILL be replaced, if it still under a warranty. If the failure of the 80% charge hold is after the 1000 cycle point, the normal use expectation, it will NOT be covered.
Here is the actual Warranty statement made by Apple in re Notebook Batteries, as of today:
Notebook Owners
Your one-year warranty includes replacement coverage for a defective battery. You can extend your replacement coverage for a defective battery to three years from the date of your notebook purchase with the AppleCare Protection Plan. However, the AppleCare Protection Plan for notebook computers does not cover batteries that have failed or are exhibiting diminished capacity except when the failure or diminished capacity is the result of a manufacturing defect. Apple offers a battery replacement service for MacBook Air and all MacBook Pro notebooks with built-in batteries. You can purchase replacement batteries for late models of Apple notebooks directly from the Apple Store.
I researched this back in January and found that the battery warranty policy has not changed in 15 years. It is also essentially the same for other companies.
Translation: “Please fill me on what the Genius Bar does so that I can spin it into sounding like they’re just as degenerate as the stories I’ve heard about Geek Squad and Firedog.”
Your falsehood is not that you’re somehow misrepresenting how the Genius Bar works, it’s that you have no idea how the Genius Bar works, yet you feel you can apply the Geek Squad horror stories you’ve heard to the Genius Bar. Because, after all, they must be the same.
Of course, they aren’t the same, and if you actually had a Mac serviced at one, you would know.
Every time I venture into an Apple thread here on FR, I see the Microsoft guys getting their heads handed back to them.
You start a thread with nasty inflammatory language, and then ask us to hold the nasty? You're just lookin' for a fight, right? And it's only Wednesday! C'mon, you should have saved this for Saturday!
how am I getting my head handed to me? I am sticking to my assertions that this policy of battery usage if it exceeds 1000 charges is is not replaceable. That’s BS, I’d try my damndest to get as many charges before the year is up so they’d have to replace my battery free under warranty. Itried this strategy with my Compaq but even my well over 500 charges didn’t show signs of the battery failing until about 1 1/2 year of ownership.

How is my first post (in bold) inflamatory? Again these subtle attacks akin to the way democrats/liberals try to undermine conservatives/Republicans. Typical.
Why is that "sick?" Back in April of 2005, I got tired of being blamed by the PC crowd who claimed they were justified in trashing Mac users because Mac users trashed their threads. I took a couple of hours, scanned through a sampling of 36 threads, 18 Macs oriented (usually postings about how well the Macs worked) and 18 PC oriented (usually posted by Freepers with problems) and did a statistical analysis of the postings. It wasn't hard.
Here is the post of my results:
To: John Valentine; HAL9000; antiRepublicrat; CheneyChick; N3WBI3; general_re; StayAt HomeMother; ...Just to be very clear, I was specifically referring to alleged "bashing" by comment posters.I have long thought that there was a distinct dichotomy between the civility of Mac users on MS threads and vice-verse. This was just a casual observation that Mac users on Windows' threads, aside from comments such as "Buy a Mac" in response to problems on MS Windows computers, were generally fairly helpful and polite compared to MS Windows users on Mac oriented threads.
I decided to check and see if my casual observation was actually fact.
I did a Free Republic search for both "Windows" and "Microsoft" and read the first 18 threads I found dealing with Windows' security and OS issues. I then did a similar search for "Macintosh" and "Apple" as well as "OSX" and read the first 18 threads also dealing with Macintosh's security and OS issues.
I tabulated comments in each thread that I deemed were "invading" the thread (Mac is better than Windows in Windows threads, or Windows is better than Mac in Mac threads). I noted comments in three categories: mild, moderate, and insulting. Those which I deemed "mild" were those in which a platform advocate made reasoned commentary about their preferred platform and compared it to the subject platform. Those that commented denigrating the subject platform with ignorant or outdated mis-information, I deemed "moderate". Finally, comments attacking or denigrating the users of the subject platform, I deemed "Insulting". These judgments were subjective on my part... but I attempted to be totally fair.
The findings were eye opening.
Microsoft Windows Threads: In the 18 threads dealling with problems or OS issues of Microsoft Windows, I found 33 pro-Macintosh comments out of 944 comments in the threads. Those comments accounted for a mere 3.5% of all comments. Of those comments, 19 (2%) were of the mild "Buy a Mac" type, 14 (1.5%) were of the "Windows sucks and you should buy a Mac" category, and 1 was an outright insult to Windows users. Incidentally SIX of the 18 threads had no pro-Mac/Anti-Windows comments (although there were were Windows users slamming Windows in all but one of the threads!)
Four of the 18 Windows articles mentioned Macs in the body of the article... and naturally there were more pro/anti Mac comments in those particular threads by about 3 to 1 over articles that did not mention Macs.
Interestingly, 16 of the 944 comments in the Windows threads were gratuitous slams against Macs... 1.7%... and four of them were outright insults to Mac users themselves.
Apple Macintosh OSX Threads On the 18 Macintosh threads, which were for some reason more active than the Windows threads with 1563 comments. In those 1563 comments, 230 (an astounding 14.7%) were pro-Windows/anti-Mac comments! Of those, 89 (5.7%) were of the mild "Windows can do the job better" or "I prefer to use Windows because there is more depth to the software" type. 112 (7.2%) were of the moderate type, repeating out-dated or mis-information about Macs as gospel truth. There were 29 (1.8%) outright insult comments attacking or denigrating Mac users as" Gay", "Liberal" or "scraggly, goateed, artsy, hippies."
Going the other way in the Mac threads, 2.4% of the comments (38) were anti-Windows. Of those, 29 (1.9%) were mild and 9 (0.6%) were moderate... and there were zero insults/attacks of Windows users. Examining these, it is apparent that most are responses to the attacks and/or mis-information pushed by the Mac thread invaders (I hesitate to use the term "Trolls"). In five of the Mac threads, comments had been deleted by FR moderators due to abuse of Mac bashing invaders... nowhere was this found on the MS Windows threads surveyed.
The evidence is in. Windows "Microsofties" are far more insulting and invasive of Mac threads than "Macmoonies" are of Windows threads.
You can read the entire archived thread Tiger's out this week. No Bull..
