Apple's "new" battery technology???
Apple.com ^ | 6/16/09 | Apple.com

Posted on 07/01/2009 11:36:55 AM PDT by Blue Highway

The new MacBook Pro family has a breakthrough battery that runs for up to 7 hours on a single charge (8 hours on the 17-inch MacBook Pro).1 And thanks to advanced chemistry and an innovative new charging method, it can be recharged up to 1000 times — nearly three times the lifespan of typical notebook batteries.2 All in a notebook that’s as thin and light as ever....

And since most Macbooks and laptops in general are 17” or greater it was a little snarky for you to quote the lower of the 2 prices to compare with the $130 price of the Compaq. $179 freaking dollars for a battery!!!! Just damn... I wonder what the upcharge for a proprietary battery like these new Li-Poly batteries will cost? I am only guessing but they will probably be more than $179...

Wow, you’re hostile toward Apple. Have to be to come to that conclusion.

He meant that you’ll be able to buy an aftermarket battery by the time you need one.

And as you yourself have a “laptop still running strong except for the non charging battery” you understand that even if MacBook’s battery dies you can still just plug it in and run it that way.

Gack, amazing how much hate one good company can inspire...

Do we know yet if this “Smart IC processor monitored Li-poly battery” of the Macbook Pro will allow you to run exclusively off ac power only once the internal non-removable battery dies?

That falls well into the realm of "duh".

Yeesh, man, if you hate Apple so much, why don't you just stay off Apple threads? Underwater basket weaving is considerably more productive...

I’ll bet they don’t break three hours playing full-screen movies.

The REAL test would be folding proteins!

It’s not hate as much as it is incredulous wonder how people can support a company that uses subterfuge to try to hoodwink their own customers. If I were a person that recieved a Macbook as a gift even I’d probably go postal seeing all the BS they try to scam their customers for. What I am really shocked is the customers are willing to bend over and take it from Steve Jobs so willingly.

Then buy your GD Compaq and be happy with your broken battery. I have a Mac laptop that's three years old and the battery is still good.

You're happy with a cr@p computer that's broken and trolling the Mac threads bitching about a hypothetical broken battery on a computer you don't even own.

Do you have something to back this up with? As I recall when the aluminum 13in MacBooks were introduced, Jobs said the plastic model was the best selling laptop they have ever had. That would say to me that 13in MacBooks are what most Macbooks would be.

I wonder what the upcharge for a proprietary battery like these new Li-Poly batteries will cost? I am only guessing but they will probably be more than $179...

Now I am a lowly Mac user taken in easily by subterfuge and only think I am getting a superior product when in fact I have what can only be called a paperweight by someone feeling generous so I could be wrong. But that support page is for the new Macbooks with the new batteries. If you look a little bit lower on that page it also says if you go to an Apple retail store you will have it back the same day. If you mail it in it will take 3-4 business days. All in all not that bad. Especially if the useful life of the battery is what is advertised, I don't imagine we will find out for a while on that front.

I was being sarcastic as no one ever can predict the BS Apple will try. I seriously wouldn't be surprised if Apple tried to cripple the ability to run the laptop off AC power once the battery dies. I can see Apple implementing this BS strategy the first time the battery fails completely, and posting this message upon rebooting,

"Dear faithful Mac "Genius", your battery has been determined by the integrated Smart IC Apple iChip™ as being fully depleted. This is the first attempt to reboot with a drained battery. After the fifth attempt your Macbook will fail to boot.

Return this Macbook ASAP to your nearest GENIUS Bar™ and be prepared to wait 3 weeks and cost of replacement is $209 plus applicable taxes.

Please consider a purchase or upgrade with the new array of iPhones and iPods and iTVs at your nearest Apple Center. Thank you for your loyal support, it is good karma for you."

I don’t see the problems you’re so wound up about.
Per this thread, I really am happy to see a company moving to such batteries for exactly the reasons you’re cheesed off at ‘em about.
Really. As I noted in a previous post, everything you’re decrying as “subterfuge” and “hoodwinking” I see as an attractive selling point.
You don’t have to buy one, nobody is forcing you to post on this thread, and if someone outright gave you a MacBook then you could easily sell/trade it for what you really want - no need to go postal.

Why obssess over non-replaceable batteries if you won’t need to replace them? some of us realize we’ll replace the device within 5 years, so if the battery outlives that (’bout time!) I wouldn’t want to pay money/size/weight to support replacable (needing extra connectors/covers/airgaps/etc.). I have exactly such a non-replacable battery in my iPod, and I greatly appreciate the space/weight/money savings it allows; when the now-outdated Li-ion cell goes, I’ll have already upgraded to a superior model.

I don’t see the problem. I see a company responding to advancing technology and users’ needs - and yes, that does involves some tradeoffs. Net tradeoff is improvement; works for me.

What on earth, aside from hateful cynisism, leads you to think they would do such a thing?

Now you sound like a typical Apple follower. I posted this thread you fool, how the hell is that trolling? Duh...

You’re accusing me of not owning the Compaq Presario F572US that I have owned for 2 years. I love how liberals automatically start calling people liars without knowing the truth themselves.

My wife had the same problem. LI batteries can be a bit tricky. I replaced hers and the problem went away. Ask Apple to swap out the battery. My Wife’s is also a Macbook Pro that is about 15 months old. She puts the miles on it.

It’s called speculation. And frankly I don’t see anything outlandish about that scenario considering it IS Apple we are talking about.

You had to reach all the way to the elbow to pull that out. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, so how about proving it. You have issues.

“Speculation” is a viable application of probabilities based on known past performance.
“Slander” is accusing someone of made-up BS having no articulable basis in reality.

Again: what on earth gives you the notion they would do that? other than your seething hatred leading to hoping they would just so you’d have some justification? For all your vitriolic assertions you have yet to indicate any basis for thinking Apple is doing anything malicious here - yet you continue on (sounds like “trolling” to me).

I didn't use the word malicious, but I do see it as a scam that they expect the laptop returned to Apple for a battery replacement. That was the basis for this thread. Apparently Apple people love the idea they will have to bring their computer back to Apple once the battery fails. That's great I guess. I on the other hand prefer to not have to send off my computer to the manufacturer. I did have to do it for a recall wifi on my Compaq and as painless as they treated it and as fast of a turnaround (1 week) it still sucked.

I can't read? I totally understood your freaking smarmy Apple mentality response.

1) You accused me of lying that I didn't own said laptop with a dead battery. YOU WERE WRONG (where is my apology?? hmmm.....)

2) You told me to buy a GD Compaq laptop... I ALREADY OWN IT, AND IF THE GD IS SUPPOSED TO BE SAYING THE LORD'S NAME IN VAIN THEN YOU ARE A LOWER CLASSED POS THEN I GAVE YOU CREDIT FOR.

Unlike other computer manufacturers Apple has retail outlets that can handle a lot of issues on site. The battery can be replaced and the computer returned to the owner same day at a retail store. It just isn’t the big deal you are trying to make it out to be. Now maybe if the batteries come no where close to the advertised useful life you would have a point, but we don’t know that yet. All in all, taking a computer in for one day at the mall while I did other shopping during the entire time of ownership is not that big of a deal. On the other hand if the battery lasts five years it will have most likely lasted the entire time I would plan to use it as my primary computer and the rest of the time I could leave it plugged in at the house if at all.
