A Work Of Art I Simply Must Share
email ^ | Unknown | Abraham Lincoln

Posted on 06/30/2009 6:55:59 PM PDT by Windflier

So I said to him, "Barack, I know Abe Lincoln, and you ain't Abe Lincoln."

"You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred. You cannot build character and courage by taking away people's initiative and independence. You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves."

.....Abraham Lincoln

Next time we run a presidential candidate, let's make sure he (or she) would be comfortable sitting at this table.

Where are they? Heaven? Heaven is a poker game at a Republican convention?

That’s what’s creepy about it.

FR has been taken over by cross-dressing Democrats, third party loons and Republican malcontents. They’ll fill up your thread with “RINOs” and Bush-bashing garbage (you’ll probably even read that Eisenhower was a Communist), but your picture is cool. Pay no attention to the flying monkeys.

I can’t see how Reagan was put on the left.

Geeez...... they're all on the right. Crikey...

Each of these men during the worst times of their offices seem to have left America in a better stead than Obama’s 100 days in office. And the artist did an awesome job of portraying his fantasy of the presidents’ poker night with Lincoln.

Thanks for posting the quote, it’s so appropriate for today’s economic systems being shakened.

IIRC it is called “Grand Old Gang” by Andy Thomas.

Thank you. I only got it in an email, with no attribution for the artist. I think it's a great painting, and wouldn't mind having a print for my home.

Think I'll poke around and see if they can be had.

I meant that Republican does not necessarily equal good and that except for Reagan these men do not represent the GOP well. But upon learning the artist made one for the Dems, I guess he’s not a lackey.

Nice artwork. Evocative. At many levels.

I agree. I totally dig this painting.

Wonder where Abe's joke came from? Probably not the artist, though he clearly intended to show all of the Presidents reacting to something funny that Abe said.

I'm reminded of an anecdote attributed to the President "I don't mind losing the general, so much, I can make another in 5 minutes.... but I do regret the loss of the horses"

Whether you agree with his politics or not (I don't) Old Abe had a sense of humor, and was funny, I don't care who you are...

Where did you get it?

As indicated, it came to me in an email, source unknown. According to poster PLMerite, it's called “Grand Old Gang” by artist Andy Thomas.

Appreciate it, GOPJ.

I’ve been given the correct attribution for that quote, though. It was apparently written by Reverend William J. H. Boetcke in the late 1800’s.

Amen to that. For my part, I think that Sarah would feel right at home in that crowd.

You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot help small men by tearing down big men.
You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.
You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than your income.
You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatreds.
You cannot establish security on borrowed money.
You cannot build character and courage by taking away a man’s initiative and independence.
You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves.

William J. H. Boetcker, 1916 (often attributed to Lincoln)

Try not to take it literally. It's the artist's imaginative tribute to some of our Republican presidents. Nothing more.

Thanks, Deb. Glad that you can appreciate it. I won't let the "flying monkeys" get under my skin (on this thread, at least).

I can definitely appreciate the first part of your comment. I've been seeing a LOT of that around here lately.

If it was literal, Teddy and Dick are getting taken to the cleaners.

Just my observation...
