First Lady Called 'Ghetto Girl' by Martha Vineyard's Black Elite
The Daily Voice/New York Magazine ^ | week of June 29, 2009 | Joni L. Reynolds

Posted on 06/30/2009 11:40:09 AM PDT by lewisglad

The word is out that the Obamas will be spending part of their summer vacation in Martha's Vineyard. "Many blacks from Oak Bluffs are elated that the Only One-in-Chief may be joining them. "People are going to lose their minds!" Tonya Lewis Lee says.

At the same time, there's also a bit of wariness among the wealthiest ones, an uncertainty whether Obama will affirm them. "Obama is more a man of the people," says a Vineyarder who's part of black high society. "He doesn't seem to identify with affluent black people. His wife definitely doesn't; she is basically a ghetto girl."

"That's what she says--I'm just being sociological. She grew up in the same place Jennifer Hudson did. She hasn't reached out to the social community of Washington, and people are waiting to see what they'll do about that." (New Yorker Magazine)

To call a Harvard lawyer a "ghetto girl" is absolutely ludicrous.

The dynamics of black society is very difficult to understand. We are probably the only race that has prejudices against other members of our own race. This anonymous member of the black elite simply said was what is said among her group.

If Mrs. Obama were light-skinned with hazel eyes maybe she might be a little more tolerable, even though she was raised on the wrong side of the track.

Michelle is attractive when she smiles --- really smiles. Problem is, her smiles are not often genuine.

This is true, and overall, she's not an unattracive woman. She's statuesque, and would look much better if she just didn't SLUMP! I make fun of her for her horrific choices of clothing. What a fashion nightmare she can be, and it's not for lack of money. I guess she just doesn't care. She can look quite nice; there's a picture of her in a lovely simple black sheath, with a string of pearls, and her hair is swept up into a chignon. She looks lovely.

Another nice picture is of her in the White House, again, wearing a simple dress, but instead of standing up straight, she's standing with one hip cocked up, a stance that is not attractive for an official picture of the First Lady.

The author IS clueless. They didn’t post “Irish Need Not Apply” signs for the health of the Irish.

Southerners were stereotype racists, but they were amateurs. The New Yorkers were racist against ethnic groups I'd never even heard of. I soon discovered that they looked down on everyone, including themselves. It made for an interesting dichotomy.

I experienced that when we lived in NJ. I'm from MS, and one of my neighbors asked about the racism of whites against blacks. I told her I'd seen more racism there in NJ than I'd ever seen in MS. In NJ, it was Italians against Irish, Polish against Germans, and many Christians against Jews. It was just amazing to watch.

Well, to begin, Michael had vitiligo, a pigment disorder. He wasn't "white," or "light-skinned" --- he suffered from a medical disorder. ____________________

Give me a break. Why did he have plastic surgery tomake himself look white? Why did he use white men's sperm and white women to have his WHITE kids. He wanted nothing to do with being black. Michelle wants to be white so bad she can taste it. Photobucket

That’s some great historical info. I always thought the term ‘redneck’ came from the denigration of white folks, specifically men, who had to work the fields. My paternal Grandmother was a sharecropper, and her sons and daughters worked the fields along with her, just to make ends meet, since she was the sole breadwinner. So I’ve always described my Daddy as a redneck, because that’s the way he described himself. He was a proud, hardworking man, who came from that same stock.

And here I thought that Crackers were the white folks in the northern areas of FL and the southern third of GA. When Bob Graham was running for Gov. of FL, his running mate was from N. FL, and they were called the Graham-Cracker ticket. ;o)

I knew a black woman with that condition. She didn't do anything to try to hide it, and she was a lovely woman, in looks, as well as personality.

I never saw any pictures of Michael Jackson that showed any evidence of vitiglio, and I remember him from his very first appearances with his brothers and their singing group. Of course, he could have been made up quite a bit to cover it, but I often wondered if he just said that he had it, and used it as an excuse for his lightening his skin. I don't think it had anything to do with his nose jobs.

I always felt sorry for him, because it seemed he suffered from a terrible self-image, and went through so much mutilation to make himself 'better'.

Michael wore white makeup because the melanin in his skin was deficient, leaving him with "white" splotches on his skin.

For Michael, it was easier or more desirable to go white. When I was a little girl in San Antonio, there was an older lady who went to my beauty shop who wore solid black stockings, gloves, and high collars in the heat of summer to hide her splotches of vitiligo. Another lady who went to our church wore Pan-Cake makeup over her spots.

He wore a LOT of make-up to cover the scars from his plastic surgery. Bless his little heart.

I can't stand Joe Jackson!

The ONLY thing she can control are her actions, her thoughts and her words.

Not true. She can control the way she dresses and the people she associates with. Okay, it's not her fault that her arms are extremely long but she hangs them down by her side like a gorilla. Her large derriere is not her fault but she could cover it better with the right style of dress. Argyle sweaters that would properly fit her 10 year old daughter are definitely her fault.

I think he did have vitiligo, and just chose to go white. I have a few little white patches myself, luckily very small and in no-so-noticeable places. But if I had larger splotches, I don't know what I'd do. Probably invest in a very good coverup makeup.

If you look at him even in 1984, two years before he claimed he was diagnosed, there was something wrong with him --- too much makeup, something. Even as far back as Off The Wall, in 1979, something was odd.

You're right, Suzi, he was a monstrous talent in an overly frail human package. So sad, when he had so much at his fingertips. Didn't he know how much all the little girls like me adored him, just as he was?

No, Michael was responding to his abusive father's criticism of his nose and his skin shade.

Of course, Joe is also dark-skinned, but he doesn't think he is.

There are few things more stupid than colorism. One brown-skinned person calling another brown-skinned person "too brown" or "not brown enough" is asinine.

Joe Jackson is a very evil man, who has a lot to answer for, here and in the hereafter.

Every time he sees a microphone since Michael's death, Joe pimps his new record label. What a wretch of a man.
