The word is out that the Obamas will be spending part of their summer vacation in Martha's Vineyard. "Many blacks from Oak Bluffs are elated that the Only One-in-Chief may be joining them. "People are going to lose their minds!" Tonya Lewis Lee says.
At the same time, there's also a bit of wariness among the wealthiest ones, an uncertainty whether Obama will affirm them. "Obama is more a man of the people," says a Vineyarder who's part of black high society. "He doesn't seem to identify with affluent black people. His wife definitely doesn't; she is basically a ghetto girl."

To call a Harvard lawyer a "ghetto girl" is absolutely ludicrous.
The dynamics of black society is very difficult to understand. We are probably the only race that has prejudices against other members of our own race. This anonymous member of the black elite simply said was what is said among her group.
If Mrs. Obama were light-skinned with hazel eyes maybe she might be a little more tolerable, even though she was raised on the wrong side of the track.

Amen to that. Her skin color, her physique and her jaw line are of absolutely no importance. What she does with what she has is all that matters. When I read some of the petty, bitchy things people write about her corporeal being, it's enough to make me disassociate myself from Free Republic. The ONLY thing she can control are her actions, her thoughts and her words. Let's focus on those things.
LOL!! So true. And I once had a friend who was actually born in Ireland and who often indulged in the particularly Irish depressed self-loathing remarks (the kind that immediately precede a scathing put-down of everyone else within earshot). So I explained how Americans use those terms, "lace-curtain" and "shanty Irish", and asked him what the real Irish term was for the upper class. Without missing a beat, he said, "English."
I collapsed laughing. He just stood there mournfully (pretext for a drink).
Dwelling on her physical appearance ONLY because of the “second Jackie.” nonsense. Obviously no trophy wife. What I see in both of them is anger. He certainly conceals it better than she does.

I had forgotten about 'shanty irish' --- also, another putdown is 'tinkers'.
“White” until the last generation meant “WASP.” or British-American. For the longest time, this left out Jew and Catholics. In the 19th Century, German-speakers were not thought to be “white.”So it is not simply a matter of conplexion.
But she acts nouveau riche. She flaunts her wealth, designer shoes, make-up artists, houses, and even her friends -- very tasteless behavior. We have to hear about her poop and her private parts. That said, she is very generous, but it's often connected to publicity. She really has no polish and no depth of understanding, but a lot of balls and a lot of possessions and staff. She has accomplished a lot, but so much of it is brass instead of gold.
So, are we talking skin color or blood color...as in blue blood.
Oh, but the old-money, upper crust Irish-Americans DO look down on the Kennedy’s as trash. There was a story decades ago that JFK had been engaged to one of that caste. After being elected POTUS, he was in an elevator with the former fiancee’s mother and mentioned ‘I almost married your daughter’ to which she sniffed ‘and I am so glad you didn’t.’
Wonder what they have shut up about or wiped from her record?
