Ore. Woman Convicted of Feeding Bears Must Leave Home for 3 Years
ABA Journal ^ | Martha Neil

A 61-year-old Oregon woman who was convicted of feeding wild bears at her home, even after neighbors reportedly warned her not to do so, has been sentenced to stay away from her own home for three years.

As a special condition of her three-year probation for chasing and harassing wildlife, Karen Noyes must stay away from a 7-mile stretch of road that includes her own home, reports the Oregonian in an article that includes a photo of Noyes handing a bunch of grapes into the gaping jaws of a hungry bear.

Noyes says she plans to appeal the conviction and insists that she was never warned that she shouldn't feed the bears. Neighbors say the animals, which lose their natural fear of humans when fed, became a dangerous nuisance. Noyes allegedly was feeding the animals as far back as 2003.

This is one of those situations that would have taken care of itself. There was no need for the government to involve itself.

You know, when there is a picture in the newspaper of you violating the law that you were convicted of violating, your chances of successfully appealing the conviction are

Slim and Nunn.

The term idiot doesn’t even begin to describe this woman.

I wonder if she means she is appealing the sentence. The sentence is what is ridiculous.

She probably believes she is an animal lover “helping” the bears... but by removing their natural fear of humans, animal control may be forced to shoot the bears who are now approaching humans.

I don’t agree. Unless the feeding is stopped a neighbor
or child could get hurt. Thats a legitimate function of
govt; to protect us from other peoples lawlessness.

I believe the bear feeding lady will win her appeal. The law about feeding the bears really had to do with using bait to lure a bear while hunting. She was not hunting and had no intention of killing the bear. She was just feeding the bear like you might do in a zoo.

Name one legitimate zoo that lets you feed the animals.

You said — Name one legitimate zoo that lets you feed the animals.

Well, I can attest to the Dallas Zoo (in Texas) and the Portland Zoo (in Oregon) allowing people to do that. And also, although not a zoo, it’s a place for captive fish, at Bonneville Dam in Oregon (along the Columbia River). They’ve got sturgeon there and other fish that they allow you to feed, with the food that you can get from them (the facility, there).

Letting people feed the zoo animals has been a popular thing for a while. I guess you haven’t been to a zoo in a while... LOL...

The dumb (censored) was creating a potentially harmful situation in her community by her actions. Sooner or later, someone is bound to get hurt.

He was referring to her prospective Darwin Award. Go here:

The problem is that the bears she feeds might eat someone else when they're done with her.

There are zoos that will sell you special food for feeding the animals. The Catskill Game Farm in Upstate New York used to do it. They have since shut down on unrelated issues.

Worst of all, the unintended consequence of this woman’s actions may be that bears become less afraid of humans as well as more susceptible of breaking into adjacent homes. I don’t think some of the posters have thought about that scenario.
