Bruce Springsteen refuses to play Born in the USA for Glastonbury

Festival fans hoping to hear a parade of Bruce Springsteen's greatest hits were left disappointed
The crowd tried booing, chanting and raucous applause but Bruce Springsteen resolutely refused to play Born in the USA to a pleading Glastonbury audience last night.
The 59-year-old American served up a lively performance, putting paid to critics who predicted he would turn the Saturday night headlining slot into a “dad rock” event, but fans hoping for a nostalgic show were left disappointed.
The first of the music veteran's smash hits, Born to Run, didn’t come until two hours into his set, and it was close to three hours before he brought out Glory Days and Dancing in the Dark, which closed the show.
By that time, festivalgoers looking for a sing-a-long had long abandoned the Pyramid Stage.
Danielle Folley, 30, of Gloucester, who gave up at midnight, after two hours in the thronging crowd, said: “He was really alive and really energetic but he didn’t play Born in The USA and everyone was quite gutted about it. I don’t know why he chose to do that.
“We were hoping to hear all the hits that we grew up with and we wanted to reminisce, so it was a shame.”

I know the media was in the tank for the Viet Cong but I remember my dad was in Vietnam when the whole Kent State thing went down so I'm pretty sure that was before Nixon got re-elected in a landslide.
Perhaps I'm being a little hard on Nixon. My dad never talked much about his Vietnam or Korea or WWII days but I do remember him being highly upset at Nixon for cutting and running.
Thankfully my dad's still alive. Maybe I can get him to talk more about it.
Springsteen songs have never really done much for me — just usually don’t like the melodies he puts together — but for my money, the best Bruce cover is “Never Goin’ Back” by The Beat Farmers.

My problem with Nixon was wage and price controls and a few other lefty ideas he tried at the time. If I remember correctly the EPA was his deal. His problem with the war was he knew we were losing because we wouldn't fight, but when he tried to fight, the "Kerry's" and "Fonda" types would take over a school or something. I think if he had had a stronger political hand we would have continued bombing N Viet Nam until they gave up, but the political class blocked everything he tried to do.
The fairest documentary I've ever seen about that period is called "Viet Nam, the Thousand Day War". It pretty much tells the good bad and ugly the way I remember it. At one point, a Viet Cong General or some big shot said they would have given up but Jane Fonda and her cohort's would win the war for them eventually, so they kept holding on. The bombing of Hanoi was brutal for them and it was unpopular even behind the commie lines. Their death rate was about 10-20 of them for 1 of us. The writing was on the wall and they knew it. We CHOSE to lose. The military never lost a battle that I know of. We had many tough battles, but it was always worse for Charlie.
Nixon invaded Cambodia (with somewhat dubious results) but he also bombed the North in Operation Linebacker and mined Haiphong harbor, both of which had a real impact on the North and brought them back to the bargaining table in Paris.
Nixon had no choice but to start to disengage, since the previous administration had already exhausted the patience of the American people. Remember the war had been going on for almost 8 years by the time Nixon came into office.
You should try this out sometime, Tell someone you would STILL vote for Nixon rather than that commie lovin McGovern even today. Watch their faces. They may stop breathing. Just like now, I would still vote for Bush rather than Kerry or AlGore even after the prescription mess and the amnesty plan. I could probably find another dozen things I don't like about Bush, but he's head and shoulders above the others and sure enough what we have now.
This is the part I'm not getting. And, again, it's probably my dad talking but Nixon won in a landslide even in the midst of all the protests and demonstrations and nightly newscasts. We were on the verge of winning.
Yes, DemocRATS were throwing obstacles in Nixon's path but he had the American people on his side.
I guess you had to be there, but by the time Nixon was elected, Johnson had already messed up so bad, Johnson didn't even want a second term. Nixon really believed he could win with honor. If a baby died or a mother caught on fire, a whole bombing campaign came to a halt. If Nixon made headway in Nam, some American city or school campus went up in smoke. The acid head hippy surfer dope smokers had already gone nuts and wanted America to fail. I guess the last straw was when Walter Cronkite went commie. When HE decided the war was lost, he had bad news every night at 6pm on CBS. It was a mess to watch America fall apart. Those same people now run business, government, and media.
As I recxall, Bruce got REALLU UPSET that Reagan co-opted the song during his election campaign, playing it at most of his campaign stops. People heard the chorus over and over, which gave people a different idea about it.
Bruce never got ove that, IMHO.
