The FAA is already deflecting blame for the death of Billy Mays -- claiming the legendary TV pitchman wasn't wearing a seat belt when he took a shot to the head during a rough landing on a flight he was on yesterday.
Here's what we know -- Billy Mays was aboard US Airways Flight 1241 flying from Philadelphia, which landed roughly when the front tire blew out as it touched down. After the flight, Billy told FOX 13 in Tampa that something struck him in the head -- here's Billy's actual quote:
"All of a sudden as we hit you know it was just the hardest hit, all the things from the ceiling started dropping. It hit me on the head, but I got a hard head."
We called the FAA for comment, and a spokesperson told us, "The passenger needs to wear a seat belt during landing and he didn't."
A spokesperson for US Airways did not want to comment until more information comes to light.
Billy posted about it last on his Twitter last night, saying, "Just had a close call landing in Tampa. The tires blew out upon landing. Stuck in the plane on the runway. You can always count on US Air."
A few months ago I was on a flight where AFTER landing and while taxiing to the gate, some stupid young man decided to unfasten his seat beat and partially stand up. The plane came to a stop as the attractive young female flight attendant, who’d been beauty-queen-cheerful the whole flight, marched all the way back to the rear of the plane where stupid young man was, wearing a look-that-could-kill on her face, and gave him a stern lecture about how the plane would be unable to proceed until he sat back down and fastened his seat belt. It was a small plane, and the WHOLE cabin could hear and turned around to look. Stupid young man turned red, sat down, buckled his seat belt, and will NEVER pull that stunt again. I think they’ve got some indicator lights up front where the flight attendants can see if there are any unbuckled belts. Somehow she knew what was up within a couple of seconds of stupid young man pulling open his belt buckle, because by the time he was actually standing up, she was already back at the rear of the plane.

It was already reported that the tire blew on landing, not taxiing. Big difference when the reports also said the front tire blew when it came into contact with the runway, before the reversers are activated. It would have been leaked out by anyone riding on that plane that he stood up while it was in the process of getting all the wheels on the ground.
To add even more against that notion, what would have been gained by getting up before it even gets close to the terminal, especially if he was in first class?
I was put in the hands of a neurosurgeon who had 4 cat scans done in the 3 days he kept me in the hospital. When he let me go home, he ordered me (and my wife) that I was not allowed to drive for six weeks. My wife saw X-rays that supposedly showed fractures in my skull and cheek bone. (All this without breaking my glasses, though it was 3 days before they were returned to me with my keys and cell phone.)
I might mention that I am 80 years old, and do take aspirin daily along with enalapril for mild hypertension. Don't ask why a careful guy like me wound up doing something so stupid. I have not had any seizures or other ill effects though.
How does he know if Mays was wearing a seat belt or not?
and here’s his latest twitter posting ... now where’s my 40 oz. Big Gulp?
That’s a ‘Caf-Pow, not a Big Gulp!
Great to hear you're doing so well.FOR GOD'S SAKE...be more careful in the future! ;-)
Does anybody remember how Federico Pena said that ValuJet was safe right after their crash in Florida, and then he was quietly moved to another cabinet post shortly after that?

When was it discovered that Mays wasn’t wearing a seatbelt and Who discovered that Mays wasn’t waearing a seatbelt?
What should one insist be done after someone gets hit in the head due to falls, sports, accidents??? Please let me (and all the (FReepers) know what we should do. Go to our general doctor and ask for what? And if it’s after doctor’s hours, should we risk the long wait in the ER (I am in illegal alien country)? Really, what should one do after a child or family member gets hit in the head??
Please respond. This might save lives.
If stuff falls out of the overhead bins, wearing a seatbelt is irrelevant. I have personally been beaned hard enough to see stars by HEAVY item falling out of overhead bin.
How many people have been downloading and buying your singles in the past three days?
Whoa. You have got to stop dancing atop piles of wood! You dodged a bullet, thank G-d!
Please check out #91 and add your wisdom here too. Many of us have been and will be again in such a situation and need to know what to do.
Was this a subdural or epidural? I’ve heard both.
LOL- I stand corrected!
