FAA -- Billy (Mays) Wasn't Wearing a Seat Belt on Plane

The FAA is already deflecting blame for the death of Billy Mays -- claiming the legendary TV pitchman wasn't wearing a seat belt when he took a shot to the head during a rough landing on a flight he was on yesterday.

Here's what we know -- Billy Mays was aboard US Airways Flight 1241 flying from Philadelphia, which landed roughly when the front tire blew out as it touched down. After the flight, Billy told FOX 13 in Tampa that something struck him in the head -- here's Billy's actual quote:

"All of a sudden as we hit you know it was just the hardest hit, all the things from the ceiling started dropping. It hit me on the head, but I got a hard head."

We called the FAA for comment, and a spokesperson told us, "The passenger needs to wear a seat belt during landing and he didn't."

A spokesperson for US Airways did not want to comment until more information comes to light.

Billy posted about it last on his Twitter last night, saying, "Just had a close call landing in Tampa. The tires blew out upon landing. Stuck in the plane on the runway. You can always count on US Air."

I just started watching "Pitchmen" this past week and I even saw the Twit last night on the tires blowing out.

Of all the deaths this week, I would never have had him in a death pool(if I was sick enough to be in a death pool)

Gee, I wonder if the news channels will run Billy Mays coverage 24/7 like Michael Jackson?

Good question. Let's see now. Child molesting weird pervert metrosexual who became a cultural icon vs. heterosexual, masculine, likable pitch-man with a loving normal family. I'm struggling here. Help me out.

Unless the cargo that he claims fell and hit him in the head was wearing a seatbelt, this would have made no difference.

I'd like to know how the FAA knows that he was not wearing his seat belt.

>> It’s time the FAA made mandatory the wearing of helmets by each passenger.

PLEASE don’t go there! They might be listening, and they just might do it.

I see a few stories about Billy Mays, a guy who helped a lot of ordinary people live their dreams. Contrast that with a deluge of stories and round-the-clock coverage on Fox News about a deeply sick pedophile who hasn't done a thing of note in over twenty years.

Is there anything wrong with modern society?

Bumping your head against a kitchen cabinet can be fatal.

Epidural Hematoma

Epidural or subdural.

He was found dead “early in the morning”. He might have died much earlier. His flight landed around 3p i think. Wife said he was lucid at 6 when he got home. So he was lucid say 6 or 7 hours before sleep if he went to bed at 10. That’s a lot less than 15 hours

Maybe this is similar to what happened to Vanessa Redgrave’s daughter.

It seems very doubtful to me that anyone from FAA would issue any kind of statement to anyone not in an official venue.

And especially not to TMZ.

Regardless, there are people who jump up and start getting their stuff as soon as the plane has landed and sort of slowed down.

Here the plane blew a tire, maybe after it had been on the runway a while. That would cause quite a jolt and, obviously, caused stuff to fall out of the bins. Who knows? Those same people who jump up and start taking stuff out, um, THEIR bins are open and stuff could come out and hit them on the head.

I've done dozens of craniotomies and time is really of the essence here. Everyone involved in the landing that bumped their head on something should have been seen by medical personnel immediately.

Sounds like you're the perfect person to opine on this matter, doc. How hard a knock would he have had to have suffered to cause a subdural? If he was on daily aspirin (which many guys his age are) would that have increased his risk?

(I ask that 'cause I'm on daily aspirin and sometimes think of CVAs,etc).

More likely scenario is that someone, such as Mays, got up after the plane landed and as soon as it began to slow down a little.

The person could have been standing there in the aisle with the overhead bin door open, getting stuff out, when the plane blew a tire and jolted. Probably lost his balance and something came out of the open bin and conked him on the head.

Otherwise, you’re right.

Memo to Self: Always go to the hospital for a checkup after a strong blow to the head.
