FAA -- Billy (Mays) Wasn't Wearing a Seat Belt on Plane

The FAA is already deflecting blame for the death of Billy Mays -- claiming the legendary TV pitchman wasn't wearing a seat belt when he took a shot to the head during a rough landing on a flight he was on yesterday.

Here's what we know -- Billy Mays was aboard US Airways Flight 1241 flying from Philadelphia, which landed roughly when the front tire blew out as it touched down. After the flight, Billy told FOX 13 in Tampa that something struck him in the head -- here's Billy's actual quote:

"All of a sudden as we hit you know it was just the hardest hit, all the things from the ceiling started dropping. It hit me on the head, but I got a hard head."

We called the FAA for comment, and a spokesperson told us, "The passenger needs to wear a seat belt during landing and he didn't."

A spokesperson for US Airways did not want to comment until more information comes to light.

Billy posted about it last on his Twitter last night, saying, "Just had a close call landing in Tampa. The tires blew out upon landing. Stuck in the plane on the runway. You can always count on US Air."

How would the FAA know if this particular passenger was or was not using his seat belt? Sounds like garbage to me at this stage.

Well guess what. It’s not all about you.
I don’t often hit the abuse button. Probably three times in all my years here.

Now you can see the fourth.

Interesting stuff, doc. My mentioning my "fear" of CVAs is more along the lines of "hemorrhagic vs embolic" CVA.It's my cardiologist who put me on the aspirin and I've known for a long time that there's almost always a tradeoff in medical decisions that are made. That's why they call the practice of medicine a science *and* an art.I learned that during 20 years in hospital administration.

Hey,who knows. You just might get called into the lawsuit that's almost certain to occur as an expert witness! ;-)

I hate sloppy formulations like that. It makes it sound as though someone fired a bullet at him.

His wife said he wasn’t feeling well when he went to bed around 10 pm last night.

Mays’ wife, Deborah Mays, told investigators that her husband had complained he didn’t feel well before he went to bed some time after 10 p.m. Saturday night, Tampa police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said.

This is my frustration. We are getting no news since MJ checked out in an entirely foreseeable manner. I have real respect for Mays and the mark he made during his lifetime. RIP Billy.

I can't begin to count how many times I wished this guy would shut the hell up when one of commercials came on at twice the normal volume at night waking up humans and animals alike but I never wished him dead.

This is terrible.

Can you say non-disclosed settlement out of court? Wait, that’s not all! You get bad press and worse rep in the press for killing a pitchman.

At least according to what I read he didn't have a lucid interval. Lucid interval by definition is the loss of consciousness at time of the initial trauma, with return to more normal consciousness, followed by deterioration. Could have had a subdural.

I’ve never known anyone to get out of their seat until the aircraft was off the runway and nearly at the gate. Aircraft tires blow out on landing, not on the taxi back to the gate.

If he had bleeding in the brain wouldn't he have complained of a headache? Maybe he did complain and we just haven't heard yet. Or maybe a blood clot was jarred loose from someplace. RIP Billy. We never know when our time will come.

The gender difference in suffering epidural hematomas is simply related to the fact that males engage in behavior which more frequently result in energetic head injury. (bar fights, etc.)

This is where its going to get intersting. I’m working overnight tonight. I will look at dozens of brain CT ordered by ER docs and nurse practioners for really, really, really minor trauma. Not surprisingly 99.9% of them will show no significant traumatic abnormality. Can we afford this practice? No way we can stop. If you don’t order them all and miss the 0.1% you’ll get sued for all your worth.

Since you two are in the biz, and of course you have some extra time!, can you give us old regular patients some insight as to the better way to attack this health care issue.
