Michael Jackson's death sparks Florida bus brawl

MIAMI (Reuters) - A fight broke out on a Florida bus when news of Michael Jackson's death sparked debate over whether he should be remembered as a great musical talent, and one passenger was charged with assault, police said on Friday.

The bus was moving through the city of North Lauderdale on Thursday when passenger James Kiernan received a text message about Jackson's death on his cell phone, and he read it aloud on the bus, the Broward County Sheriff's Department said.

The unidentified bus driver opined that "Michael Jackson should have been in jail long ago," prompting Kiernan, 60, to retort that "the world just lost a great musical talent," the police report said.

It said the last remark enraged another passenger, Henry Wideman, who started a swearing match with Kiernan, then pulled out a knife and chased Kiernan down the aisle with it.

Some people take opinions about musical preferences way too seriously

Oh, come on, people. Surely we can find a middle ground here. It isn’t that hard.

Like this: “The world just lost a great musical talent who should’ve been in jail a long time ago.”

That would’ve been the best statement ever. Or...”he was a child molester but I admit, I made my Mom buy Thriller for me”

There’s roughly a twelve-year period that he burned through the charts and owned Rock. Then, the guy simply lost the charm and the passion. His relative sponged off his money. His business associates rigged deals to make money off him. And he continued to spend money like there was no limit. He had zero understanding of economics or control over spending.

As you look at Elvis...his mega empire continued on after he died and covered the expenses of his wife and daughter easily. The real King? Still goes back to Elvis in the end.

He was a talented pedophile, with the finest lawyers and enough money to get off. In more ways then one.

Fleeing the country after his last trial, to a country well know as a NAMBLA sex tourism destination was probably a bad move.

A doctor found so much plastic in Michael Jackson’s body, that it was made into Legos for kids to play with.

Farrah Faucet was so good, that she was granted one wish after death. She asked that the world be made safe for children. And well...you know what happened after that.

Hmmmmm...It's my understanding the the Elvis estate, upon his death, was not in good financial shape. Only through the involvement and direction/management by Priscilla Presley did it become the present money maker.

And if you look at Jackson, you see a guy who owns half the Beatles catalog, among other assets. With Jackson's gargantuan spending at an end, his estate will be able to provide far more for his children than Elvis' estate ever did for his. My guess is that they'll spend a significant portion of it on psychiatry bills, but that's another issue.

I thought he had to sell that a few years back, and Sony bought it up.

Actually, Elvis at his death was close to bankruptcy. It was Prisilla who with financial advisors, turned that estate around. One of the reasons why they opened Graceland to the public. She cleaned house!

Now, the estate is well in the black and Lisa Marie is running the show.

I thought he had to sell that a few years back, and Sony bought it up.

From the articles surrounding his death, it seems Jackson still retains a 50% interest in the Sony/ATV catalog, which includes 250 Beatles songs and hundred of thousands of other songs by artists like Beck, Eminem, and artists in the top 40 right now. For fans of Andy Williams, Jackson owns the rights to "Moon River". If you like Kenny Loggins, Jackson owns "Footloose".

Jackson sold the other half to Sony back in 1995. Apparently Jackson and his advisers were very shrewd businessmen - the catalog is valued at over one billion dollars and nets his estate about $80 million every year. This catalog is apparently why Jackson could keep finding people willing to lend him money. It's also a measure of how much money Jackson was burning through to maintain his lifestyle.
