The Survivalist Guide To Protesting (Iran-Non-Violent-Pacifist type. What would you do?)
The Atlantic ^ | 25 Jun 2009 | Andrew Sullivan

A twitterer named lettersoftheliv has published an exhaustive series of tweets as a how-to guide for non-violent demonstrations. Here's how to protect yourself from tear gas:

Do not pick up/throw back tear gas canisters- will severely burn your hands.

Vinegar soaked bandana helps you breath with tear gas. Contaminates fast, have extra.

Most tear gas injuries come from PANIC/chaos,not the chemicals:Ppl lose heads.Effects intense but very short-term.

Stay calm and yell “WALK, WALK” as you walk away from tear gas/pepper spray attack- spread calm.

Do not wear contact lens- pepper spray can linger and damage your eyes.

Tear gas - CS or pepper spary cleans out your sinuses real good and makes a grown man cry.

The article is for Iranian protestors. I was just wondering, I've seen pictures of Iranians beaten with ASP's, bats, hacked to death with ax'es, shot in cold blood, stuffed in trunks of vehicles and taken to who knows what fate. The article explains how to protect yourself and others during a non-violent protest even though the Govt. aggressors have no reguard for life at all and the protestors are unarmed and pose no physical threat to anyone.

I've been to 2 teaparties. MSM characterized both as insignificant and local talking heads portrayed us as fringe elements and looking for trouble, totally ignoring the message we were trying to make in a peaceful and civil way. Since my wife and I went to the last one on April 15, things have gotten way worse. In fact polititions have totally ignored our message and ridiculed us. It was about out of control Govt. that is spending our money as if it was theirs and damn us for questioning their motives.

I fear cap and trade will sail through the Dem. controled congress no matter how many calls or letters from us. 0bama's takeover of healthcare will be next and will be passed no matter how much we protest. It's almost like we have no voice at all how our money is spent or the direction our country is headed. In fact if you oppose this socialist/marxist course Hussein has put us on, you get put on a hit list sponsered by the DHS.

Just my opinion but I have had enough and I don't think I'm alone. Just a hypothetical - What if it keeps getting worse. They keep ignoring our voice and traveling this road to socialism and totally ignoring the constitution? What if more and more start protesting the unconstitutional acts of 0bama and congress? Will they finally listen or start cracking down like the freedom hating, so-called religion of peace muslum fanatics that are in Iran? After all, at this point, the only part of the constitution that hasn't been attacked is our freedom to assemle. However, it seems to me that they are bent on their agenda no what matter what I think or those like me think. At some point we will have enough and won't be able to take it anymore. When it happens, just remember we're not Iran.

we all need to start wearing green- wristbands would be good.

If 50 million Americans wear green (especially on July 4th) it might send a message we are not all corrupt caveling soulless moral relativist appeasers like the zerO.

Those are some scary thoughts, but not unthinkable. You’re right about the media trivializing the tea parties. I went to one on April 15, in Laguna Beach, CA. I was amazed by how many people showed up for such a tiny town, population 24,000, and how many more people in cars yelled and beeped their support. The next day it was barely mentioned in their online newspaper. (We don’t live there - were just vacationing.) So that part was disappointing.

I hope you’re wrong about the cap and trade bill. You know, with Warren Buffett stating that our economy is in miserable condition and 627,000 MORE being out of work this month, it would be nice to think there was some common sense in our government and that the biggest tax on America wouldn’t pass. Our country is being run by lunatics. There’s no other explanation.

As far as protests go, America isn’t Iran, but all it would take would be for an idiot policeman to lose his cool, fire a gun, the crowd gets scared and stampedes, and then the rest of the LE begins firing guns/tear gas out of fear. OTOH, more Americans than ever have CCW permits, so who knows what would ultimately happen.

If it happened, I think the first round would be let loose by a leftist infiltrator to stir trouble and help paint peaceful conservative protesters as radical extremists.

And that would be the state run media talking point.
Further demonizing conservatives, just like they did in Germany.

If I were in Iran, I (in concert with other conspirators), would stop assembling and start sabotaging (pulling alarms, cutting water mains, shorting out electric grids, avoiding camera surveillance by wearing ski masks or muslim garb, etc).

In America, I think the demonstration of our serious opposition to the tyranny that has suddenly descended upon us would best be accomplished by organizing marches in which the marchers are carrying unloaded firearms. Totally peaceful and harmless, silent, letting the powerful imagery bespeak the seriousness for itself. In city after city, the streets filled with gun-toting, no nonsense citizenry.

The liberal aghast reaction would be priceless.

I have observed the events in Iraq and Afghanistan over the past few years. Of course my heart is with our troops but I can’t help but learn a few things.

Faced with overwhelming firepower it appears that only a few of the enemies weapons can be considered effective.

1.IED’s
2.Mortars
3.Sniper fire

In the event that I find myself in a similar circumstance, it is clear to me which of these systems would be most readably available to me.

Don’t be surprised to see the power of obama’s goons and thugs turned on us in 2012. Count on it in 2016.

I don't worry about local or state PD judging by my little corner of the world. My fear is agitators like sissy's from HuffPo, or any other Hussein worshiping group inciting some reaction from a peaceful protest. I've witnessed the power of the Hussein socialist army of zombies on the internet and I can just see their hateful, anti-American venom used to start something that they perceive as a holy war against our constitution, veterans, and anyone who cherishes our way of life and the roots of what made us a great nation.

I agree. Sometimes a guy or gal just does what they have to do. Thank God we grew up knowing what our freedoms are and can see when they are threatened and know how to remedy it.

Woof, Boo, and Hoorah.

The Battle of Algiers is a pretty good model for a successful urban insurrection.

One chambered round, fired, would induce hundreds dead.

“armed and unloaded” marches are galactically stupid.
Rule 1: all guns are loaded.

Ooooooooooh... I defer to your superior intellect. Why in the hell would one good FReeper call another one "stupid"? You putz. Give me a better idea. You effin know-it-all. You could easily criticize my idea w/o calling me "galactically stupid".

If you took the time to study such marches & protests, you wouldn’t be quite so personally touchy about the comment. You would also learn that the idea isn’t uniquely yours, and perceive that I’m expressing frustration over the oft-repeated idea, not you personally.

Interesting intellectual exercise. But I'm neither non-violent nor a pacifist. Don't like crowds. You're too helpless in a crowd.

If it ever comes near the point it has reached in Iran the last thing the thugs will need to worry about is a non-violent crowd. Trust me on that one.
