Because of torrential rainfall in the spring, after I tilled, I planted about a month late. My anticipation will have to continue a little longer.

Getting my first tomatoes. They are so tasty. Cut enough basil to have pesto also. Cucumbers will be following shortly. My taste buds are in heaven.

I planted everything in my garden on April 26 and 27. The eggplants were planted as transplants that I bought from a garden center. I have picked a couple prior to today (about a week or two ago).

I think I was about 2 weeks behind compaired to last year - because of rain mostly.

I had my first small harvest of green beans a couple days ago. I've got baby squash and cucumbers, but they're not ready yet. I've got a lot of tomatoes, but they're still green. These are Tiger Tom. You can seem the stripes already :) I think I'll cook up some fried green tomatoes this weekend.

I may take more pictures soon of my squash and tomato beds. The plants are getting out of control! This is such a fun time of year, even better once the harvest kicks into full gear.

Has anyone ever planted Black Krim tomatoes?
I picked them up by mistake and have no idea what I am getting.

When I am King again there will be no Garden Threads allowed until 7 AM PDT so I can keep up with the posts as they are entered. I got a couple of cubic yards free top soil yesterday so I started spreading it in a area of the front lawn where water stands in the winter and the mower leaves ruts deep enough to break a ankle. I have to get back to digging and cleaning the Garlic.
First Wife and I went to the Redwood Acres Fair here in Eureka yesterday which is geared toward the 4H and FFA kids and their livestock. The larger Humboldt County Fair is later n Ferndale. There will be judging of flowers and vegetables there along with horse racing...

FR has a gardening thread!
Jenbean and I are starting to garden, and I am starting some basic beekeeping skills.
We have also started some home brewing of wine and beer ;) ....makes those long, hot, Arkansas summers go by quicker...

I remember the beekeeping thread. I posted links to beekeeping organizations in Maryland and Virginia, thinking this would be helpful to someone in D.C. But you're in Arkansas.
Do you mind if I ask why an Arkansan calls himself DCBryan1?

From what I understand they are a big tomato with good taste and they like the heat. I may try one next year.

It is finally getting warmer here at 8,500 ft elevation in the CO Rockies (zone 4). It is an experimental year for me and I am trying a variety of cold hardy and warmer weather veggies to see what I can grow in the short season here. The turnips are growing like gang busters. The tomatoes and potatoes are finally starting to grow. Beans, summer squash and winter squash just coming up. The winter squash may not have enough time, but I will try to cover them if there is an early freeze. I need to improve indoor earky startup planting skills. I had one tomatoe variety that started very well, but the rest stayed as runts for two months. I am jealouss of those who already have fresh veggies ready!

I have tried that red film on tomatoes and did not see any appreciable difference. In fact it was a bit of a pain—could not keep it secured well.
I am just up the road by about 100 miles from Clemson Un. where the film was developed. I wonder if it would work better farther north.
This week got the first cherry tomatoes. Cukes and zucchini continue to produce their ever loving hearts out. Have green peppers the size of tennis balls and the experimental eggplant is hanging in there but no fruit yet.

nutrients and fertilizer
I used to believe 100% organic
But now I like high level of humus and organic matter and a little chemical fertilizer that has trace minerals (micro nutrients) added. This fertilizer works synergistically with the humus. But if overdone the way some farmers do it gradually burns up the humus

I have gathered enough green beans to serve for dinner. They no longer cost us $100 each.

I have 2 small plum tomatoes started, and lots of blooms on other plants. Blooms on squash and cukes, but no fruit yet. Blooms on peppers. Kidney and Limas have a good start. My potatoes are the most impressive part of the garden. Big full plants. The carrots and chard replanting sprouted then shriveled. Beets have a shot.
I talked with our garden guru, and he said the guy we bought our compost from had so much business this year that we probably got compost that wasn’t fully aged. That explains why we are needing to fertilize, and why it isn’t holding moisture like it should.

A question about pickling jalapeno peppers. Last year I pickled my jalapenos whole. They turned out just fine on the most part. I did a couple of jars with "pickle crisp" and I did not like them.
This year I want to just do jalapeno rings. Do any of you have a good procedure?
Oh and I still need a nice Eggplant Lasagna recipe - tips and tricks

I am looking at plans to plant garlic in the fall. What is the harvest time like? Do I plant in fall and harvest the next year or do I plant in fall, let the growth go through an entire summer and winter and harvest the following spring?
