The belief that private investment must be displaced by Government investment must in the end lead to State capitalism and to an increasingly State-dominated economy, the ultimate results of which are sufficiently clear abroad.

Today’s post includes the entire editorial page and the following letters page from Sunday, June 25, 1939. I omit only one political cartoon for a reason which now escapes me. Anyway, the idea is to give a sort of snapshot of how we were thinking as the summer of 1939 got underway. Lots of topics are covered: economics, race, Catholic marriage, the European situation. The big question I come away with, however, involves a different subject – culinary affairs. Did Charles II really knight a piece of beef as “Sir Loin”?

1930s are repeating themselves.

Thanks for posting that. There is no doubt where the Chicago Tribune stands on the New Deal. I can’t quite make out the date. Is this from 1934?

Yes, April 21, 1924,

Folks need to study history, we are repeating the same mistakes of the past.

Great cartoon! Change a few names, everything else is just the same today.

And note the title: Planned Economy or Planned Destruction?

Well, we now know what they got.
It was a plan for economic failure and huge growth in government.
Today FDR's "grandkids" are out playing the same tricks on us!
