SUMMER SNOW
SELF | JUNE 18, 2009 | swampsniper

This Snowy Egret was hunting nest building materials today. They constantly repair and reinforce their nests, but this one may be starting a new effort, the weather has killed a lot of chicks this year. When they are constantly wet their body temperature falls too low.

The Migratory birds seem to have done exceptionally well last year. I’ve never seen so many Baltimore Orioles as have turned up this summer. Robins are also doing well. Every nest I’ve found had 4 eggs and the ones I kept track of were able to raise all 4 chicks till they left the nests.

Great pics, Swampsniper. Here is something you might be interested in knowing:

This spring, in the Low Desert of the American Southwest, I've seen about 25-30 separate indigo buntings along water courses and at oases. From what I've been reading, this massive irruption of indigo buntings (an eastern passerine) in the West is unprecedented.

We've also been having an unseasonably cold and especially wet spring out here. Who knows? Maybe this type of weather attracts the eastern birds. We'll see next year if this trend continues, and if the indigo bunting continues its march westward.

Just beautiful. I have a couple of pics on my old computer that I took of an egret sitting on ny bird bath. They are very tame around my place. I'm near a bird sanctuary.

Hope to see more of your inspiring work!!
