On the heels of yesterday's casting announcements, Latinoreview has exclusively learned that Tony Gilroy, the oscar nominated writer/director of Michael Clayton (and one of my top five favorite all time screenwriters) has come aboard to rewrite MGM/UA's remake of RED DAWN!
Not surprising considering that Dan Bradley, the director of the remake, was the 2nd unit director of the Jason Bourne films which Gilroy penned.
Gilroy has recently delivered a 107 page draft dated 06-01-09. The remake was penned by Carl Ellsworth and Jeremy Passmore and based on the 1984 Cold War-era film co-written and directed by John Milius. We took a look at the Ellsworth/Passmore draft which you can watch HERE.
The story is about a group of teenagers who form an impromptu insurgency when their town is invaded by Chinese and Russian soldiers. [Source]

Two cast in 'Red Dawn' remake
The Wolverines are gathering.
Josh Peck and Adrianne Palicki have been cast in MGM/UA's remake of "Red Dawn," set to begin filming in September. They join the already cast Chris Hemsworth in the story of a group of teenagers who form an impromptu insurgency when their town is invaded by Chinese and Russian soldiers.
Peck will play Matt Eckert -- the role originated by Charlie Sheen -- the hotheaded younger brother of Hemsworth's Jed Eckert and star quarterback of their Spokane high school football team. Palicki will play Toni, the role first inhabited by Jennifer Grey. She's a tough fighter the brothers encounter who develops romantic feelings for Jed, a Marine home on leave and the group's unofficial leader.
Dan Bradley, a stunt coordinator and second-unit director on "The Bourne Ultimatum" and "Quantum of Solace," will direct the revamp based on the 1984 Cold War-era film co-written and directed by John Milius. Carl Ellsworth and Jeremy Passmore penned the updated screenplay.
Contrafilm's Beau Flynn and Tripp Vinson are producing, and Vince Newman is executive producing. The film is scheduled to hit theaters Sept. 24, 2010. [Source]
I have a better idea: let’s get Unintended Consequences made into a movie. Much more timely than Red Dawn!
How about something more creative for a change? Almost all of the blizzard of remakes have been flops.
McVeigh is said to have said that “The Turner Diaries” may have been his bible, but he considered “Unintended Consequences” to be the “new testament”.
Indeed, UC had smarter ways to fight than the method in TD.
AVENGE ME!
This is not going to be good.
They are also remaking “Fame” and “Footloose.” Hollywood is committing 80’s movie blasphemy.
That reminds me. Time to watch that movie again this weekend! Excellent!
No, you do not get it... China and Russia invade to impose Capitalism on an ultrasocialist USA and the wolverines fight with other people’s cadres to deter the reactionary antirevolutionists to preserve the non-workers’ paradise.
Venezula fights for the USA in this one, with Castro brigades.
Jeez. Footloose remake? Kevin Bacon must be laughing hard on that one. Lemme guess, a black kid in a white town wants to dance because evil whitey didn’t want him to dance.
let's see -
The group of teenagers will be something like this:
A slow witted, pudgy white boy who is all thumbs and is always getting bailed out of trouble by others.
A muslim brother and sister who by their actions show the others the power of faith and positive thinking. In the end they give their lives so the rest of the group may live. In return the other survivors convert to Islam.
A slender, wiry black girl who is accomplished in martial arts and hand-to-hand combat. She spends her time pulling the slow-witted white boy out of trouble and pulling smelly Chinese rapists off the other females in the group.
Two lesbian white girls who spend their time explaining why a foreign invasion is no worse than being made fun of for their sexual orientation in high school gym class.
An attractive biracial girl who is a natural leader and skilled in almost every outdoor activity and survival technique.
A good looking mulatto boy who is a whiz at electronics and breaks into the enemy communications net with a device he made from an old car AM radio.
A trans-gender whose original sex is indeterminate. He/she/it wins the hearts of the others when he/she/it submits to rape by an ugly Russian to distract him while the others escape right under his nose.
Several loathsome white guys who are crack shots but have bad personal hygiene and a penchant for insulting others by making racial and sexist slurs. By the end of the movie they realize their behavior is wrong and they apologize to everyone for being inconsiderate and hateful.
A gay boy who lives to cook and decorates their lean-to's and caves with peace symbols and rainbows.
The BATFE would be re-organized into SS units.
LMAO!!! Did you make all of that up yourself? If so, very well done...
You know...that may be a great rewrite...ha ha ha
Ah yes!
“The Sum of All Rewrites”
Jed was a Marine home on leave?
Who knew?
I thought he was a kid, one year out of high school that was just hanging around town.
Because of both political correctness and the vital importance of overseas markets in today’s film industry there is virtually no chance that the movie can involve a foreign invasion unless it’s a neo Nazi western European army.
Almost certainly the film will involve a “dominionist” Christian dictatorship.
