Bob Bogle, lead guitarist and co-founder of the rock band The Ventures, known for 1960s instrumental hits including "Walk, Don't Run," has died at age 75. Don Wilson, the band's other co-founder, told The News Tribune of Tacoma that Bogle became ill over the weekend and died Sunday.
The band sold millions of albums and heavily influenced other rock guitarists. It was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008. The hall's Web site hailed The Ventures as "the most successful instrumental combo in rock and roll history."
"Walk, Don't Run" reached No. 2 on the Billboard chart in 1960, and a revised version, "Walk, Don't Run '64," reached No. 8 in 1964. Among the band's other hits were "Perfidia" and the theme from "Hawaii Five-O." The band got its start in 1958 in Tacoma. Bogle initiall
y played lead and bass and Wilson played rhythm guitar. They were soon joined by Nokie Edwards, another guitarist, and drummer Howie Johnson, later replaced by Mel Taylor.

The album came with sheet music for the songs.
” The Ventures music sure brings back memories of my youth.”
Mine too in the early 60’s right around the time The Beatles appeared on the Ed Sullivan show . My buddy took up the guitar as a result of seeing the show and I started banging on pots and pans ! Anyway , my pal’s sister had a bunch of Ventures records so that was my first exposure to them . I always dug the albums “ Ventures In Space “ and “ ON STAGE “ which featured cuts from live concerts around the world inc. Japan and the recording was excellent .
I recall my uncle dropping over one time around 1964 when I was 12 , with some Chet Atkins records . I thought The Ventures could play ! He didn’t knock them ; he just suggested that I also listen to Atkins , which I did . In the early 70’s , just before he died , I took my uncle Doug to see Chet Atkins in concert at an outdoor venue in the New Jersey countryside . It was one of the biggest thrills of his life . He had ALL the albums and there a ton released .
LIVE IN JAPAN 1966 . They were more popular than The Beatles at this time . Exc. audio/visual .

That was the first song from a British band to top the charts in the US.
I loved Chet Atkins...can’t remember him not being part of the mix of music I heard growing up.
Telstar!! Before my time, but I always loved that tune. Mom used to sing it to me. “Magic star above, send a message to my love...” Got to admit, the music was a lot better than the lyrics.
I always compare the quality of music to its longevity. The 50’s and 60’s from surf to rock still rolls on in popularity..........I loved the Ventures!
He influenced a heck of a lot of young guitarists who went on the be famous inc. The Ventures , George Harrison of The Beatles , “ Big Al “ Anderson of NRBQ and 1000s of others .

But they had some great originals too.
I thought Telstar was originally a Joe Meek produced British instrumental. I’d seen a version of it with lyrics (in French) but figured they were made up lyrics just like when Don Ho sang words to Quiet Village and the theme from Hawaii Five Oh.

Bobby Rydell recorded a version in the ‘60s. He was an acquaintance of my mother’s, maybe that was why she enjoyed it so. The lyrics went like this:
Magic star above, send a message to my love
tell him that I’ll wait patiently;
I’m sad and so lonely dreaming of him only;
swift and graceful as a dove
as graceful as a dove!
When you think about it, the dove was an ancient method of distant communication, so it was more than a convenient rhyme.
This one here is the theme they did for a VD film called Damaged Goods (IMDB), the only feature film by king of the high school scare film, Sid Davis.
(hear a snippet at...) http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=33:hbfqxxeald0e
They also had a feature film in the 1960s (made in Japan),Beloved Invaders (IMDB) that is on a region free, NTSC DVD in Japan.
More recently, when I saw them for the second time with the son of Mel Taylor on drums, they were pathetic fuddy daddies, barely able to remember the chords. (I recall a review of their re-recorded "hits" a few years back, that said they sounded like a high school band trying to imitate the Ventures.) They toured Japan forever, six monthe a year, Don Wilson told me, and put out a whole buncha albums there never released here.
Also, Nokie Edwards appeared with them in the U.S. where they rarely played in recent years, but in Japan he was a solo artist, and the lead was played by Gerry McGhee.
I saw them in Japan 2 summers ago and they were TIGHT and rocking . Very impressive performance from old “ fuddie daddys “ .
They are coming again to Japan this summer for 54 concerts from July 11 through Sept. 26th . These guys may be old , but they still have drive and energy . That’s a hectic schedule for anybody . And the Japanese love them so much .
