Don't call it a remake.
As all involved in "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3" assert at every opportunity, the new film is not a redo of the 1974 movie starring Walter Matthau and Robert Shaw.
"It's basically a story of a hostage situation on a train in New York City," star Denzel Washington said at a recent news conference. "I think that's what the two films have in common." But as screenwriter Brian Helgeland might say, it's a gray area.
The filmmakers are quick to refer to the 1973 John Godey novel ("The Taking of Pelham One Two Three"), though the current version bears even less resemblance to the book than it does to the 1974 adaptation.

Robert Shaw Pwnd that film as the hijacker. Also love the underrated Hector Elizondo as his racist henchman.
Well said. Any females on your over=rated list?
The writing on “Mad Men” and especially “In Treatment” far outshines most of what has come out of the motion picture industry over the past 25 years. I remember wanting to vomit after seeing Hollywood try to get “cerebral” by filming Richard Yates’s “Revolutionary Road.”
Overrated: Julia Roberts. Horse-faced tart with acting skills as wooden as the chair I am sitting on.
Of course it’s not a remake. All the bad guys have real names in this one, rather than Green, Brown, Blue, Gray, etc.
Let me guess...the bad guys win this time.
(That’s what they did to Ocean’s Eleven, On The Waterfront (which I didn’t see), and I’m sure there are others...
Hmmm...had to think for a minute. I can't remember the last time I saw a movie featuring a woman as the lead actor.
I'm not married so I'm not forced to go to chick flicks. :-)
Angelina Jolie comes to mind. I saw her in "Wanted". Didn't bring anything to that movie. Anybody could have played her part.
I had a mental block and could not remember Robert Shaw’s name. That movie is never on TV, I have to buy it all the good movies are never shown anymore.
I agree. Another redo that was near criminal was The Flight of the Phoenix. The original was as good as it gets.
Never seen ‘Training Day’? Far from that plot line.
I’ll stick with the old movie thanks. The new one will probably be loaded with special effects since these actors today can’t act to save their lives.
