Geology Picture of the Week, May 31-June 6, 2009: The Diamond, Longs Peak, Colorado
Various

First note: at the Hawaii Volcano Observatory Webcams page, you can see the two Halemaumau cams. Over the past few days, glow from the wall vent has been very bright at night, indicating that the surface of the pond is high. In the Overlook Webcam, in the AM around dawn, it's been possible to see the surface of the pond. A further rise and spillover onto the floor of Halemaumau would be very, very interesting to see.

On to the images for today. Not having seen anything of remarkable interest, I decided to go with one of America's best rock faces, the Diamond on Longs Peak (Colorado). The first image is for context.

The climber is a noted woman Alpinist, Steph Davis. This ascent route is called "pervertical".

But that perverted climb that girl is doing isn't for me...

I’ve seen it from a great spot at the bottom of the boulder field...simply awesome and truly gigantic. Photos just can’t do justice to the size of it - it’s just huge.

Had to stop at the keyhole on that climb; another climber had fallen off a cliff a bit further ahead and they had to bring in a helicopter to retrieve his body, so the trail above the keyhole was closed for the afternoon.

You would *not* see me attempting an ascent of the face. Wow.

EEEEK.....the pervertical trail reminds me of when my husband tried to do the Angels somethingorother Trail in Zion.....I would NOT go near it....and he couldn’t do much of it in the end....too scary.

That’s one brave girl, I can’t even climb on a ladder without my knees shaking.

Beautiful images.

You could have said “Estes Park” and I would have gotten it.

I’ve been up there before, and saw this, but didn’t have a name attached to it. Next time I go up, I’ll take some some pictures and post ‘em here.

Thanks for the info...

I’ve climbed the backside twice, once with my daughter and her future husband (he proposed to her at the top), but this is the first time I’ve seen the front side close up. Ai yai yai, that’s a scary position that girl’s in.

She seems to be free climbing the face; pretty extreme. She’s got bigger balls than I do.

On the one attempt I've made (up the back side "Keyhole Route" - the "safest" route), a couple of guys in our group who were ahead of me saw a guy slip, say "oh s***", and fall off the trail. The guy fell a couple hundred feet straight down; not something you survive. We were doing great and would have probably summitted (amazing weather), but they closed the upper part of the mountain for the afternoon.

She's got a video of the ascent here. The video is *more* impressive than the photos. It starts with a different climb in Utah, but the Long's climb starts a minute or two in.
