SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) - Hormel Foods Corp. reported Thursday net income rose 4% for the quarter but sales growth was flat despite increased demand for Spam, Dinty Moore stews, and Chi-Chi's Mexican food items. Hormel reported second-quarter net income of $80.4 million, or 59 cents a share, up from $77.6 million, or 56 cents a share, in the year-earlier period. Sales were $1.6 billion, about even with last year.

I definitely understand the emergency/storage/survival food appeal of Spam. But I presume I'm correct in thinking that most homes (even poor ones) in the US have refrigerators with freezers?
Articles I've read suggest that the increased buying is not from people storing Spam, but people who are incorporating it into their regular daily home menus.
Many buy Spam as a survival food because it keeps longer.
I stocked Chef-Boy-r-Dee as my emergency food....taste better and is a hell of alot cheaper...

At one point in my life, I was on commercial flights very frequently, and took to ordering tomato juice over ice with lemon, or even Bloody Mary mix with no alcohol, because it made me feel better. The stuffy, stale, recirculated air, combined with being largely confined to my seat, started getting to me, and for whatever reason, tomato juice made me feel better. Never could drink alcohol on a plane, instant rotten headache.
If things ever get to the point that food supply becomes an issue, what makes you think electricity and fuel will be readily available at all times?
People are buying SPAM because of it's phenomenal shelf life, in excess of a decade. It's not economizing, since SPAM is actually more costly than certain, cheaper cuts of meat, as was pointed out upthread.
The Spam is not being purchased for immediate consumption, it is being stored for a future when the trucks stop running to the cities and grocery stores have no stock
In Canada they eat Kam and Klick. Tastes really good when canoe tripping and paddling hard all day. Sliced, topped with canned pineapple rings, and cooked in a reflector oven to perfection, yum.
If a person is stockpiling Spam it is a good thing to have. However a better way to do it to can your own beef. It is easy to do. Cube roasts purchased on sale. A large canning jar will hold approx 2 lb. Pack loosly, trim fat sparingly, add 1 teaspoon salt (no liquid), clean rim and screw on lid. Can in a pressure canner for 90 minutes. It is delicious for beef & noodles, burritos, beef & mashed potatoes, hot beef sandwichs, etc. Pressure Canners out of season are marked down significantly.

It’s canned, doesn’t need refrigeration [’til opened], and has the shelf life of a TWINKIE!
Nikita Khruschev was. Claimed the SPAM we sent the USSR in WW II kept the Red Army going [as well as the work force].
I don’t really consider SPAM to be gourmet fare, but I keep a store of it because it’s non-perishable and easy to store. It has the right amount of fat and salt to properly flavor pinto and navy beans, both of which are also in my emergency stores.
