Good morning Freeper gardeners. This weekend marks the end of May and I hope everyone’s gardens are doing well. I know some have had to delay planting due to weather and we all hope conditions have improved for you.
So far this weekend is looking like a good one, weather wise, all across the Nation except for some lingering rain in the extreme NE. Lets get gardening!
Yeah, still doing the quarter. Originally it was to sell, which I did for about 6 years, but the farmers markets really didn’t hit here till about 4 years ago - well after I’d had enough of beating my head against the wall.
May sell some this year of things that you can’t put up - we got a market going now in the town I live in - but mostly with the high prices and scary times growing it for myself. Rearranged the garden plan to put in some survival stuff like beans, grains, etc.
Mrs SLB told me that if I peed on the peppers she would not go near either them or me. :-)
As produce prices continue to rise; you will find 'ugly' drops quite a bit on your list of concerns. :-)
My wife used to worry about 'ugly' years ago...no more.
I didn't know that! I guess that's a good reason to have tomatoes in pots. I've got a lot of shade in my back yard and I've been moving them as I watch the shade/sun and determine what the best spots are for them.
She's a smart lady then.
The idea is to sprinkle the pee near the peppers.
We have a local farmers market but I heard it can be difficult to even get a stall let alone compete with the established growers. Seems to be kind of cliquish.
I’m pretty good at gardening in the north. I love the seasons and seeing what you can get a jump on, or make last longer.
When I lived outside of San Diego, it was a BORING “72-degrees and Sunny” every d@mn day, LOL! Zzzzzzzzzz!

Try planting a dozen Chinese Pink garlic as they mature 30 to 40 days earlier than my main crop here on Humboldt Bay
Yep...much more exciting to sit and stare at the ice cycles hanging from the light fixtures as the snow caves the roof in >:)))
I am also NC, Piedmont—zone 7, south of I-40. Re: garlic—what size pot and do you think it w/b too late to start some or should I wait till fall? I have tried planting it in the ground w/o success. Also, do you need special bulbs to plant or can I start it from a clove of garlic that I have on hand.

I’ve been trying to grow tomatoes in my bedroom for almost a year now. Finally got enough light that the vines are growing, but even though there are flower buds the buds aren’t opening. Any ideas? Do they just need more light or is it a nutrient thing?
This started as a way to corner the locally-grown tomato market during the winter months, but has progressed to a personal challenge.
i have huge hostas all around my porch which goes around 3 sides of my house and they are georgous. they bloom in aug. and the scent is a heavenly lily-ish perfume that makes the porch a perfect perch.

I’ve noticed that many veggies seem to need full sun.
Maybe you could try putting them in front of an open south facing window to get as much direct, natural sunlight as possible.
my grandma used to feed over ripe cucumbers to the chickens and they went nuts for that stuff.
Getting a jump on the seasons here usually means beating the heat/insects/hurricanes! LOL
OTOH, we get 2 seasons a year on cold crops, sometimes 2 on warm season stuff. Cold stuff we can plant in Feb and then again in Sept. Warm stuff we can slide in around March, and sometimes July/Aug.

Try starting them around Feb/March, and again in the fall. Maybe Aug/Sept? Check with your local extension agent or the state college. They should have some stuff on line as well.
we’ve grown them in pots in the greenhouse. Just make sure you get deep pots so the carrots have room to grow! :)
They do! We’ve been giving them the leaves off our broccoli and cole crops as we picked the heads. Going to give them the pea and snow pea vines next week.
i would like to get chickens but hubbymayhem is not convinced. im not sure the dogchild would tolerate them well either. hes a spoiled brat sometimes.
