In a debate in the House of Commons on
May 19, the British Prime Minister had again taken a cool and even disdainful view, as Churchill thought, of the Russian proposals. Somewhat wearily he had explained to the House that there is a sort of veil, a sort of wall, between the two Governments which it is extremely difficult to penetrate. Churchill, on the other hand, backed by Lloyd George, argued that Moscow had made a fair offer . . . more simple, more direct, more effective than Chamberlains own proposals. He begged His Majestys Government to get some brutal truths into their heads. Without an effective Eastern front, there can be no satisfactory defense in the West, and without Russia there can be no effective Eastern front.

This story developed over the course of a week or so. The paper was full of strikes and other labor unrest stories throughout this period. Consider this article a sample.
There is a wooing Stalin update at #2.

I have a special request today. For those of you who did not get the word from another thread, CougarGA7 suffered a heart attack over the weekend and is hospitalized. It sounds like he is going home today and the prognosis is good. Nevertheless I would like to relay a prayer request to the Realtime bunch to aid his recovery and support his family.
Thanks,
Homer

Roughly three months before the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, then.Yes. Molotov replaced Litvinov as Foreign Minister on May 3 (see the article I posted on May 4). That was a sign that Stalin was moving towards the Germans and away from the British and French.

Prayer for a speedy recovery CougarGA7.
Thanks for the heads-up Homey. I've talked to a lot of folks who lived through those times down in Harlan and eastern KY back then. It was a real battlefield all through the area. A lot of out-of-state strike-breakers and thugs were brought in to fight the locals. It was a tough time in America for those folks.

Looks like the National Gaurd had their hands full there. Don’t worry, by Kent State their aim improves.
Chamberlain dragged his feet with Stalin all the way into August. Even when he knew that there was something brewing between Hitler and Stalin.
The odds look good on me going home today. I have to just prove that I can get around which I think I’m doing. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers.
