Fish pedicures pop up in Illinois -- and clients are biting

Marine pedicures have popped up in Illinois -- and clients are biting: nlike many fish, the Garra rufa is unafraid of humans. In fact, these pinkie-size fish like you. They like you very much. Which is key to why they're turning up in salons in Virginia, Ohio and now, Aurora and Gurnee. People are paying $25-$50 to plop their feet and/or hands in water tanks and let swarms of the gray, toothless fish work as Neptune's exfoliators. "They have very firm lips," said Olena Manakina, co-owner of Fun Fins in the Gurnee Mills Mall. "They literally suck off the tiny patches of dead skin. It tingles like crazy for a minute. But I've yet to see somebody jump out of the tank."

I think there is a problem in that you really can’t control how much the fish take. There a reason feet and hands form callouses, and you need that extra toughness sometimes. Removing the top layer of dead skin before it falls off on it’s own may not be such a great idea.
I understand about psoriasis (my stepson has it) but I wouldn’t want a little fish-mouth on my skin. Fish are dirty. I wonder if these people think about that the fish are pooping in that water their feet are sitting in (and 15-30 minutes in the water is a long time).

My wife would like it, until you tell her that she can’t eat the fish later.

Those fish are NOT Garra Rufa. I think they are baby Tilapia cichlids (yes, related to the Tilapia you can get in a supermarket). These are the real Garra Rufa.

U.S. Supreme Court rejects appeal over Arizona ‘fish pedicures’

In 2009, Vong was told by the Arizona Board of Cosmetology that the treatment violated the agency’s safety standards, and that she could face criminal charges.

The board said any tool or equipment used in a pedicure must be stored and disinfected in a specific way, and that she could not disinfect the fish coming in contact with clients’ skin.

(There are lots of people in government who are incredibly bacteriophobic, and are even terrified of things like live culture cheeses and yoghurt, and want them Pasteurized.)
