My family is on a pinto bean diet, i'll call it that because money tight and this is all we have to eat, well rice, and homemade tortillas, but even those few inbetween times we can have eggs, cheese, fruit, vegtables, it's mostly beans, i make plain, and chili version, leftovers become soup, my kids think we are going to die, what i'd like to hear is what someone else thinks?
That is why I liked mine, I got it for 50 or 75 dollars, drove it a lot, took it from San Diego to Houston and it always started and got good gas mileage. I’ll take cheap, economical and dependable over safety any day.
Pintos are good when money is short.
A bad day commuting is when there's a Pinto in front of you and an Audi behind you (Audis of that time had a problem with 'spontaneous acceleration').
Here is my Dad's "One, One and One" recipe:
The next morning, brown the ground beef, drain and add to beans. Add Rotel tomatoes. Cook on low all day. Serve over a split piece of cornbread, open face style.
This will feed 4-6 adults with the cornbread. Last I checked, it came out to about $1.00 / person.
I know yo may be tempted to add cumin or chili powder, but then it becomes just a bad chili IMHO. And since I make a mean chili, we don't do that around here... ;-)
My SIL caught my niece, when she was about 4 YO, in the kitchen. She had opened a container of dry beans, and had then on the table, carefully sticking a pin in each of them.
Asked just what she thought she was doing, she told her mother, "I'm sticking holes in them to let the gas out!"
Unfortunately, it didn't work.
Limas are my favorite next to green beans. We also call limas “butterbeans.”
Shame on you! It is perfectly safe, UNLESS you mix them with third member of the VX-triad: Oxygen Dihydride!
Shouldn't be a probelm, if they leave the dog home...
You're busy, alright, though your Mormon ladies (some might be my relatives!) would think my wife and I (also non-Mormon) are lazy, too.
In the winter, rather than “wasting” all that heat from the antique kitchen wood stove, we simmer stock for both immediate use & for freezing to have the rest of the year.
After the bones come out of the stock pot, they go into the fire, then those ashes go to the garden...all 50' X 150' of it. The boiled down skin goes to the cats, in small doses as a treat.
Ham bones, bacon ends, and ham hocks go in the beans. Same drill for the bones and fat as for the chicken stock.
Turkeys, mainly wild that I shoot on the ranch...we're allowed 12 tags/year...mostly get roasted. When the meat is pretty much eaten, the carcase is boiled down, the bones picked clean, and instead of stock, turkey fricassee or turkey a-la king is soon simmering.
We knew we would have a light frost last night, so six quarts of peaches we froze last September came out of the freezer, and four peach pies were baked. The excess juice was sieved off beforehand, and slowly cooked down into peach syrup.
No excuse for waste.
Mongo has had enough beans.
1 can of Goya Black Beans, juice and all
Some butter
Chopped fresh onions and garlic, as much as you like.
Nuke it until it bubbles.
Season with fresh ground black pepper and hot sauce to taste.
If it gets too thick slap it on burrito.
Enjoy

Yes, they are healthy. Old time joke / rhyme:
Beans and peas are musical fruit.
The more you eat, the more you toot.
The more you toot, the better you feel.
So let’s have beans for every meal.
Well, should have looked at all the replies - before posting my reply. See just above this one.

Could you please post this recipe?
LOL! it must have been a common rhyme for all of us born in 1952. We used to taunt kids who farted in school.
Now, the kids act proud of it.
Passing gas was frowned upon in our school too. Believe me, I ate a lot of beans at home and in school when I was growing up. The 30 minute bus ride was almost too much some days and some people did just that on the bus. Of course, as noisy as they were back then, you couldn’t hear it. The smell gave it away though.
Ahh yes, the dreaded "Silent but deadlies."
Yep, the smeller’s the feller! LOL
