When we visit my folks in Texas, this is what we use. It works! It’s not as harsh as OFF and other insect repellants. It also does not smell bad.

DDT. It did the job exceptionally well and did not do any of the other absurd things it was accused of.

Everything I've read has said that DDT had a significant impact on the populations of raptors. Do you have any links to anything disproving that?

Or as an alternative, how about a logical explanation for why the population of bald eagles made such a significant comeback after DDT was banned?

I am allergic to DEET and cedar, so I am at the mercy of the mosquitoes. A couple of years ago at a hunting and fishing show, I bought a mosquito suit. A mesh jacket and pants with elastic at the wrists and ankles. The mosquitoes can’t get to your skin to bite you. It even has a thing to cover your head and face but I never wear that or the pants. But if you had on shorts the pants would protect your legs. It is made by Bug Out. I have been meaning to look on line to buy a new one.

DEET is the ONLY substance shown reliably to repel mosquitos. However:

A Natural, Alternative Insect Repellent to Deet

Isolongifolenone found as effective as DEET against mosquitoes and ticks

Lanham, MD; February 5, 2009 – Isolongifolenone, a natural compound found in the Tauroniro tree (Humiria balsamifera) of South America, has been found to effectively deter biting of mosquitoes and to repel ticks, both of which are known spreaders of diseases such as malaria, West Nile virus, and Lyme disease.

Derivatives of isolongifolenone have been widely and safely used as fragrances in cosmetics, perfumes, deodorants, and paper products, and new processing methods may make it as cheap to produce as DEET.

The results of this research are presented in the latest issue of Journal of Medical Entomology in an article by Aijun Zhang et. al titled “Isolongifolenone: A Novel Sesquiterpene Repellent of Ticks and Mosquitoes.”

The authors found that isolongifolenone deters the biting of the mosquitoes Aedes aegypti (L.) and Anopheles stephensi Liston more effectively than the widely used synthetic chemical repellent N,N-diethyl-3-methyl benzamide (DEET) in laboratory bioassays. Furthermore, it repelled blacklegged ticks and lone star ticks as effectively as DEET.

Since “isolongifolenone is easily synthesized from inexpensive turpentine oil feedstock,” the authors write, “we are therefore confident that the compound has significant potential as an inexpensive and safe repellent for protection of large human populations against blood-feeding arthropods.”

In addition, a new, patented method developed by the authors to efficiently produce isolongifolenone would make it even more cost effective.

The book that Rachel Carson wrote that led to DDT being banned has been proven to have been based on the same type of junk “science” that “supports” the Glow Bull Warming theory.

In fact, I’ll go much, MUCH farther than that. As a kid whose father was stationed at Patrick AFB near Cocoa, FL in the mid-50s, we were subjected to DDT spraying 2 - 3 times per week. I was often (sometimes intentionally) caught outside when the DDT truck went by in the afternoons. The instructions we were given was, when the truck went by, fall to the ground, cover your face and head and don’t breathe for as long as you can.

I’m no longer a kid and have suffered no ill effects as a result. Following the ban on DDT, it is estimated that approximately 100 million humans or more worldwide have died from illnesses spread by mosquitoes such as nalaria, yellow fever and equine fever to name but a few.

But, you asked about raptors. Try looking here: http://www.junkscience.com/ddtfaq.html

If and that is a BIG IF, Skin So Soft works it is because the mosquitoes can’t stand the smell. I’d rather stay in the house than smell like SSO.

The Skin So Soft thing has been proven to be a hoax.

Bottom line...they home in on body heat and your breath (the evil Co2)

Anything one can do to mask heat and Co2 will be a help.

LOL I’ll tell you a little secret from someone with a last name even spelt the same, move to a higher altitude where there are fewer of the suckers with their landing lights! There are even some evenings I can actually enjoy sitting outside without any fear of scratching myself silly afterwards!

Lemon Eucalyptus oil has been approved by the FDA as both safe and effective as a mosquito repellent.

You can make your own by buying bulk LE oil on ebay, and making a 30% solution, using grain alcohol (EverClear) as the solvent

Or you can buy it premade as “Repel”.

ROFLMAO 3200’ is that all? HAHAHAHAHA We live at over 5500’ and this is actually Mrs L (the better half hehehe)We live in a valley surrounded by mountains (The Lost River Range) and will be able to step outside our door this July and enjoy the National Hang gliding Championships with no fear of dive bombing mosquito attacks since the hang gliders launch from King Mtn which is at an elevation of over 7000’. You are welcome to come up and enjoy the mosquito free lifestyle with us! It is quite enjoyable! Although you may have to watch your step going down the front sidewalk because bears have been known to leave their “droppings” after enjoying a feast of crabapples. Another word of warning, this may remind you of Mayberry west considering one of the 911 calls in the paper was about the sheriff (who lives across the highway from us) coming home for lunch and having to chase a moose out of his front yard, but he is rather helpful considering he will stop and help stranded motorists change their tires as he did for us the day of Ronald Regan’s funeral!
