(Vanity) What kind of bird is on my feeder?
my backyard bird feeder

Posted on 05/02/2009 5:03:12 PM PDT by PERKY2004

Every spring, we get a lot of goldfinches in our backyard, along with the house finches who stay here, year 'round. (I'm in central California.) This spring, I noticed a larger black-and-yellow bird on one of our feeders, and I don't think it's a goldfinch. He's fast, so I did my best to snap a few pictures. Any ideas what kind of bird he is?

If it’s a finch, it’s huge compared to the other finches, and it’s not interested in the nyjer/thistle seed.

Looks similar to an Oriole ... the small yellow ones look like Willow Goldfinch, the state bird of Washington ...

Exactly. That was the only puzzler to me. It looked oriol-ish but the beak did look like a grosbeak. I have them in my yard and they are the beautiful red and black ones. The best part is the sound they make - it sounds like a little squeaking shoe.

In the last photo in the series, the bird does have a juvenile look, slightly gangly and out of proportion, feathers not quite mature, so I was looking in that direction. I know the birds around here pretty well, even the ones that are rare visitors, but get across the country and it’s another story, lol.

Other than sunflower seeds, do they eat anything I should put out? :)

Looks a lot like a Lesser Goldfinch. But, the colors aren’t very strong which could be due to molting.

Yes, I think you are right ... thanks everyone for your help! (I’d never seen one before on my feeder, but she’s been hanging out for a while!)

They love the sunflower seeds and any other large seeds. That’s why the good Lord gave them that wonderful beak!!

We feed them straight black oiler sunflower seeds and I’ve never heard a complaint!

Every spring we get a batch of rose-breasted grosbeaks for about 3 or 4 weeks. Like they are passing through and taking a break on their journey. Bird feeders, best blood pressure medicine ever.
