Has anyone read “Powers”?
I haven’t.
huge sci-fi fan but never read much le guin (read:none)
The graphic novel? Little to do with The Nebula Awards.
Joss Whedon is good, but best script WALL-E? That was a terrible movie even my kids hated it.
I read the Earthsea trilogy many years ago. It was decent.
Yes, that one, the winner in the linked article.
That makes six Nebulas (along with three Hugos) for Ursula.
Concur. Truly enjoyed the Firefly series and Serenity.

Gotta consider the playing field...

I dunno, I found Wall-e to be cute and it had enough sci-fi/nerd references to make me laugh every couple minutes... but did you look at the competition? Dark Knight and an episode of Stargate Atlantis? I mean, couldn’t they even have found at least *one* episode of BSG that could have replaced one of those, or something from Doctor Who (did ‘Blink’ air recently enough?), or ANYTHING else?
The only way it could of happened is government. No entrepreneur in his right mind could pass up all that free money trapped in garbage.
My kids complaint was that it did not suspend their belief. They did not say it that way, but they couldn't believe a bunch of infantile fatties could ever make it back to take over earth. We did laugh in a couple of spots, though.
Worse, I saw it in the theater and it cost like $65 with popcorn, etc. Maybe on DVD and with homemade popcorn it would have been better. Wasn't worth the price and I haven't been to a theater since. Won't go anymore either.

Well, to be honest, most people who saw it loved Wall-E, so it’s no surprise it won. Your kids sound a bit older than Wall-E’s target audience, so I’m not really surprised.
Although, I’ll admit I didn’t pay for it... I’ve got friends who can get free tickets, so the day we went, there was nobody else in the theater so we just flipped up the armrests and laid down on the seats and in general had some of the most fun we’ve ever had seeing a movie.
I love sf but I stopped paying attention to these awards when they started handing them out for cyberpunk junk.
Interesting. I’ve read LeGuin, Ursula is no Larry Niven (not even a Ben Bova in my “book”). I am currently reading Catherine Asaro, and I must say I’m enjoying her writing even though she writes with a woman’s touch. Granted, I’m only a book-and-a-half into her library...
