Microsoft Corp said on Friday a version of its long awaited Windows 7 operating system will be made available from next week. The version, known as a 'release candidate', or RC, essentially means the world's largest software company is in the final stages of completing the operating system, the successor to the unpopular Windows Vista. Microsoft said the RC will be available for download by program developers and IT professionals subscribing to the MSDN and TechNet networks on April 30 and available more broadly on May 5. The company has still not said when the finished version would begin to be installed on PCs or available to buy in shops, but the company's chief financial officer said on Thursday it could be as early as July. That would allow Microsoft to capitalise on back-to-school sales and set it up for a strong holiday shopping season.

I already don’t like it, don’t even need to see it! Every time I try the latest update I regret it!
I liked XP and Vista even more. It’s tough to make a perfect product that pleases everyone. Why don’t you like Windows’ Operating Systems?
Considering how rough Vista was, and since 7 is essentially the non-beta Vista, it ought to be released as a service pack with a giant “We’re very sorry” attached to it.
Instead, it looks like we’re going to have to buy this one too.
Windows 7 is like Vista, only they took out all the suck and replaced it with awesome.
More literally, its less annoying, and doesn’t eat RAM for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a midnight snack.
Gets huge ++’s in my book. I can finally dump XP.
I don’t get the Vista hatred either. I think it’s pretty cool. Server 2008 ain’t half-bad either.
Actually I have downloaded it and have it working on three machines. It is a vast improvement over vista. It is snappy and works pretty well on hardware running XP and Vista. I have three macs and would say that it is every bit as good as OSX Leopard. They have cured virtually all the Vista complaints.
I've had it on my rig for almost four months. No problems. It's far more stable than Vista is even now. It's the best OS Microsoft has ever built, IMHO.
I'm perfectly content as of now, but will download, jump through the hoops and install the Windows 7 RC next week anyway. It means probably having to reinstall all my other applications and stuff, but what the heck.
I really think Microsoft has a winner here. I haven't looked back since upgrading from Vista to Windows 7.
Still can't figure out this "Libraries" business though...
I think most people who give it a try will quickly become big fans as well.
Well, except for you Linux people...
with your open-toe sandles...
and Argyle socks...
Too bad you are missing out on something good. And the best thing about the RC it is free to try, can’t beat that.
I would add, my only complaint is networking. Windows 7 will only talk to other Windows 7 machines - very annoying. But, i guess that’s the incentive to upgrade all your PCs.
Nearly every Windows is like that. I had to pull teeth to get my sister’s Vista laptop to be friendly to everyone else on my parent’s network.
I remember fussing with 98 and XP and getting them to talk.
There is a work around for having to reinstall it.

I always wondered what Barney Frank wore in the privacy of his own home. Now I know.
Well, you don’t mind Vista because you obviously have a very new computer.
There’s no reason for an operating system to operate as inefficiently as Vista did. My computer was less than two years old, and Vista gave it fits before I dumped it and went back to XP, which has worked just fine.
There were other minor quibbles I had with Vista, but hopefully Microsoft will get things right this time.
I don’t have an issue networking with my xp and vista boxes, even media sharing is a breeze.
They share files, drives, printers, etc.
That’s interesting to hear. Did you you the Windows 7 network wizard - the one where W7 assings you a network key?
