legal question about race info
manc

Posted on 04/20/2009 2:18:10 PM PDT by manc

I received a form today from the school board of St Johns county FL asking me many questions regarding my kids. One of the questions which I am wondering about is when they ask what the race of my kids are. Do I have to answer this by law or can I leave it blank?

To me I see no bearing what the color of my kids are and anyway arn't we supposed to be color blind like MLK wanted.

There are other questions which struck me weird , questions like have I ever gone across as state line or county line or look for work as a fisherman, farmer or in dairy. What his nickname is and what language is their primary and secondary.

Now my oldest was told who is in 5th grade that he has to bring it back to morrow and if he doesn't he receives detention and will do for every day the form is not returned.

This just strikes me as a little draconian that my kids get punished because they never brought the form back that next day and the question about race I thought was not important.

Appreciate any answers on this please

Check “black.”

It may keep them out of the camps.

They want to know about race because different races get them different degrees of federal and state funding.
Is it intrusive? Yes.

Is one category “Native American”? I saw a post from a FReeper who said we should all choose this if we’re asked. We were born here and are Americans, so that makes it native American by any logical reading of the word definitions. Let the bureaucrats deal with the demographics.

I also do this, mark Native American, or Hispanic...I like doing this to any survey,...just to keep things stirred.

Yep. Race is sometimes medically important. (Black men really are more susceptible to heart disease, and they should know that, for example.) But I don’t see why it should matter to a school.

I would suggest filling either “NASCAR”, “IRL”, or “Formula 1”...

I got all that crap in school.

Big honking Jewish guy, mind you.

I filled out “Eskimo” and all sorts of random crap. Just pissed me off.

“have I ever gone across as state line or county line or look for work as a fisherman, farmer or in dairy”

Never heard tell of those.

Don’t know their legality, either, as they don’t pertain to a ‘protected’ class such as race.

Ah, they’ve caught on to that. They ask what tribal affiliation.

I’d put “Casino Royale de Duty Free” or somesuch.

Post the exact questions. Let’s see what we can come up with.

Of course they do. It's called the "migrant worker" class. In other words, illegals most likely.

The end of the school year is upon us, and a letter from school comes home asking about my kids?

Weren't you paying attention all year?

Just mark ...

PRESENT

(They may become president some day)

I’d write in “HUMAN” and be done with it.

Schools send out these forms because they receive extra funding based on how many minority students they have, whether student’s parents are fishermen, and any number of other silly things. Schools are always very eager to get these filled out and returned quickly because they want the extra funding. I’ve never seen them go so far as to punish students over it though.

What is your child's race? The 100 Meter Dash What is your child's nickname? Santa What is your child's primary language? The one he was born with. What is your child's secondary language? The one that he doesn't use all the time. Do you work for the Government or are in the Military? You first. Answer the questions. You don't have to make sense, only answer. They cannot change anything. THey are using these forms to get more Federal $ and I'd do everything to keep them from it.They need to wean themselves from it.

They used to do this to my kids and I ALWAYS did this

Just can't :^)

I’d go to the school administration and ask them to cite the legal requirement for you to answer such questions, and also their legal justification to place your child in detention for not returning the form.

If they can’t produce it, I would make it clear that any repercussions in how they treat your child will be challanged. You don’t have to say “law suit”....just leave it at “challanged”. There are organizations that will sue on your behalf if it comes to that.

If we don’t start ‘questioning authority’, they will just continue to grab more without batting an eyelash.

The last time I saw one of those I did not fill it out but wrote on the form: “Why are you folks so obsessed with race?”
