MIAMI - Twenty-one horses from a Venezuelan team competing at the U.S. Open Polo Championship died after collapsing before a match in Florida, officials said on Monday. The International Polo Club of Palm Beach said the Lechuza Caracas team was preparing its horses for an afternoon match when two collapsed and others began "exhibiting dizziness and disorientation." "From the reports I've received, they came out of their trailers and they were dizzy ... and began toppling over," said Terence McElroy, spokesman for the Florida Department of Agriculture. "It's my understanding that all of these horses have died, 21 in total."

I think the veterinarian has suggested a toxic cause. If it were virus-induced, the incubation period and clinical course would be more variable. I would need further clinical information to assess the cause of sudden death. Differential considerations: cantharidin, monensin, OP or carbamate insecticides, cyanogenic plants, Oleander, Japanese Yew. More information on history, surroundings, and transportation methods are needed.

Without reading much on this could it literally have been that though these are Polo horses could they also have been mules, like drug smuggling horses, that may have had balloons of drugs?

I would wonder about carbon monoxide poisoning. It says they appeared dizzy and disoriented when they were taken out of their trailer. With humans you can get a hint of CO poisoning by the cherry-red complexion, but I wonder it that would be true of a horse on areas like the belly.

Those trailers can be pretty tight and if exhaust fumes were getting in it would be rough on the animals.

Just a thought.

A similar incident happened someplace else in Florida just a few months ago. I think they determined that all the hay came from the same place, and there was some sort of toxic weed that had gotten into it.

Hugo don’t own that team, Victor Vargas does. I quote him.

“People write stories about me saying I have a Ferrari, a plane, a yacht,” he said during an interview at one of his homes, in the posh Country Club neighborhood of Caracas. “But it’s not true. I’ve got three planes, two yachts, six houses. I’ve been rich all my life!”

He makes his money in oil and banking and I smell insurance fraud.

A Study of the most destructive recorded episode of equine influenza in history.

Equine Influenza Devastates America

That would have been the headline in the Autumn of 1872 if the journalists in New York could have correlated the information pouring into The New York Times about the spread of the worst equestrian catastrophe in the history of the nation – and perhaps the world. Imagine a transportation disaster that monstrous, and then imagine if it had been totally forgotten today.

That’s the story of how nearly all the horses were stricken.
That’s the story of how the greatest equine medical disaster in American history was re-discovered by a group of equestrian researchers.

That’s the story of the Great Epizootic.

Maybe it was water polo and the horses drowned.

Shouldn't all the horses at the entire event be quarantined until they find out what happened?
