I came across a beautiful version of Unchained Melody earlier today, and it started me down memory lane.

Ferry ‘cross the Mersey - Gerry & The Pacemakers

Figures an old sailor would pick a song about a Ferry boat! :)

Seriously :| , there was so much good music back then.

"You're Heavenly" (1955) by the Saigons, from Los Angeles--a great down-tempo doo-wopper.

No, I just like the song. As an old sailor, I’ll pick Bobby Bare’s The Mermaid Song anyday. :-)

Kenny Vance The Planetones

Saw them at Coney Island about 4 years ago. Funny, but I don't remember much about them that evening. Maybe it was because there were two other guys on that night: Frankie Valli and Dion! In-freakin-credible!! It was a scene out of the past. Coney Island on a warm summer evening, lots of (more or less) 'normal' people walking around and in the crowd (normal for Brooklyn, that is).

I prefer Del Shannon’s version of “I Go to Pieces,” Judging from the sound, it seems to have been recorded in 1963—the arrangement, featuring a full orchestra and kettle drums reminds one of Baby Washington’s “Leave Me Alone” or Gene Pitney’s “Half Heaven, Half Heartache,” which were bestsellers that year. Although Peter & Gordon’s version was a hit in 1965, Del Shannon’s wasn’t released until the 1980’s, when it came out on an LP.

Bobby Bare had some really nice songs: Detroit City, Four Strong Winds, 500 Miles(from home). I saw him perform in the 80s, I think it was, at Belmont Racetrack. They used to have concerts after the races on the weekends. Couldn’t even afford to buy a beer after I lost my arse on the races.

Nice! But I like the way they moved in the one I linked to. Especially on the 2nd number (Shout). It’s a 6-min video.

This one’s a little off-genre, but check out the greatest lineup of blues legends on the same stage at once.

Lou Christie’s “Lightning Striking Again” gthe ultimate 50’s-60’s relationship song. You (girl) be good and chaste until I get done running around chasing everything in a skirt then we’ll get married and live happily ever after. It was a simpler time. This song was also the theme song of a local high school basketball team that went undefeated that year. At the end of every game the cheering section would all stand up and start singing this song.

If you're in the mood for a solid rocker, "The Man From Utopia" by Donald Woods & the Vel-Aires, from 1955, is available here. The song is said to have been inspired by Utopia Cleaners on East 98th Street in Watts, Calif. This is a two sided recording--"The Man From Utopia" comes after the down-tempo "Death of an Angel" on the record's "A" side, so the download time is just over six minutes.

I have a 78 rpm copy of this disc.

Here one can watch a 1956 performance by Perry Como of his 1948 hit "Because" (not the Dave Clark Five song). This was also a hit for Enrico Caruso in 1913.

One of the advantages of being a full time freelance photographer is that you get to cover some interesting gigs. I had one those today, the 23rd Annual Heritage Village Car Show in Largo, FL, right next door to St. Pete and Clearwater.

What a show! I have posted some 250 shots of the cars and people and goings on to my website.

My favorite was a toss up between the 1931 Cadillac and the 1942 Ford Woodie, although there was another early model Ford station wagon that tugged at my heart strings too!

Many of these cars are show cars and have won all sorts of honors for restoration.

If you want to see some really nice antique cars spend a few minutes perusing the car show shots:
