New mother eats her baby's placenta.
LA Times Blog ^ | April 9, 2009 | Elizabeth Snead

We thought we'd heard some wild diet tips floating around health-obsessed Hollywood. But this takes the cake.

According to MomLogic.com, a woman
named Chrissy Schilling had her first baby over the weekend.

And she and her sister celebrated by cooking and serving up the placenta.

They put it on pasta and into a panini sandwich and posted some photos of the meals on a Facebook page

.

According to Chrissy's sister Kathy Schilling's recommendations and recipe,
the placenta -- full of lingering blood, vitamins, hormones -- is nourishing for the baby during pregnancy, but the nutrients are also good for moms after the birth.

To hear more about how she prepared the placenta dishes, keep reading.

But before you get really grossed out, you should know that animals eat their placentas after giving birth. And humans are, after all is said and done, just animals. And it's supposed to be pretty common in some other cultures, although they probably don't post photos on Facebook.

Follow Dish Rag's gossip updates on Twitter!

Kathy writes, "When I cooked it, I cleaned the surface blood off of it but kept anything that seaped out of it into the sauce. I know I was feeling pretty giddy while eating, so maybe that was some of the happy hormones effects taking place.

The 'recipe' was pretty simple, but preparation was very fun!"

New mom Chrissy says:

"The placenta is such an amazing organ in all its done for my baby that it didn't seem right to simply throw it away. My thought was 'being the only organ that the human body makes that naturally exits the body, why not take advantage of it?' "

See more placenta dishes here.

Woo-hoo! Pass the placenta!

What do you think? Are you gonna chow down on your baby's placenta?

I wonder what MOM would do if the baby got circumcised...

Fried calamari, anyone?

In much of the world, the placentas are collected and sold to cosmetic companies for processing. All that hydrating and collagen makeup you ladies are smearing on your faces has placentas in it.

...and some animals eat each other and their own feces. Great acts to follow.

Horse and cow placentas. The urban legend of human placentas has been debunked. HOWEVER, a european company did try it with human placentas at a very high price, so they switched to cow and lievstock placentas since they were ‘more readily available’ in bulk quantities.

I dunno, if my body expels something, there’s probably a reason why I shouldn’t put it back in..

LOL!

Most animals do it because it is a breed in survival instinct. Eating it keeps other predators and scavengers from finding it and killing the baby.

That's what I understood. In the wild a rotting mass of meat is sure to attract undesirables. I guess these people are of the opinion that humans should emulate animals.

Sorry, but you are wrong. Human placentas have been used and are still being used to this day. Pharm companies harvest the blood and stem cells from them, and then use the collagen matrix to extract hyaluronan for surgical and high end collagen replacement products. Do you really think that hospitals just throw the placenta away?

I use to raise goats and they also eat the placenta. I think there may be some hormones in it but the main reason is to rid the area of the smell because of predators..

Once you start to eat it you don't stop until its all gone..

Okay. This is gross, but a funny thread nonetheless. Placenta Helper will be flying off the shelves...

No, I am well aware hospitals do not throw the placentas away. I am a ‘veteran’ of the pharmaceutical industry.

Make sure when you serve this meal that your table is adorned with corresponding placenta mats...

She and her sister?? At what point does one woman say to the other, "Hey, lets eat the placenta!" and the other one likes the idea??

And I thought nothing would ever disturb me more than Sophie's Choice.
