Strange Food Combinations

I was sitting in the movie theatre eating popcorn and Milk Duds while watching the previews of upcoming attractions when my wife asked how I could combine two seemingly opposite food items. I told her that Milk Duds, when eaten simultaneously with popcorn, are very tasty. Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it.

While waiting for the feature presentation I began to think of other strange food combinations that I have eaten through the years. Since childhood, I have dipped my potato chips into applesauce. Like Milk Duds and popcorn, the combination of the salt in the chips and sugar in the applesauce play well off of each other. I have always put ketchup on butter beans and now my children have now acquired a taste for their father’s strange legume-meets-tomato-condiment pairing.

I began to wonder what other people might eat in the way of strange food pairings, so I logged on to my Facebook page and posed the question: “What are the strange food combinations that you like to eat?”

Ham, cheese, mayo and peanut butter sandwich. Been eating these for 25 years and have made many converts, (all by stealth).

I saw a show on the cooking channel that featured a confectioner in Minneapolis that combines vinegar and chocolate to rave reviews.

My lovely Bride puts ketchup on her Mac n Cheese and pickles in her grilled cheese sandwiches.

Back in my consciousness altering days while having a severe case of the munchies and very little in the cupboard I mixed a can of corn and maple syrup.

Wasn't very good but I ate it all.

No but my brother used to do that all the time. I never liked jelly donuts which is odd b/c I like jelly and I like donuts.

I like to put potato chips inside certain sandwiches.

Google “chop suey sandwich” AFAIK only available in an old amusement park by the name of Salem Willows in Salem MA.

Sounds gross, but put enough of that Chinese garlic/pepper sauce or even FranksHotSauce on it, - Unique.

That is just wrong! Taco Sauce. (Not salsa) the kind you get in little packets from taco bell
