Strange Food Combinations

I was sitting in the movie theatre eating popcorn and Milk Duds while watching the previews of upcoming attractions when my wife asked how I could combine two seemingly opposite food items. I told her that Milk Duds, when eaten simultaneously with popcorn, are very tasty. Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it.

While waiting for the feature presentation I began to think of other strange food combinations that I have eaten through the years. Since childhood, I have dipped my potato chips into applesauce. Like Milk Duds and popcorn, the combination of the salt in the chips and sugar in the applesauce play well off of each other. I have always put ketchup on butter beans and now my children have now acquired a taste for their father’s strange legume-meets-tomato-condiment pairing.

I began to wonder what other people might eat in the way of strange food pairings, so I logged on to my Facebook page and posed the question: “What are the strange food combinations that you like to eat?”

Well, I see that peanut butter is the favorite guilty pleasure here. I was raised on fried peanut butter and baloney (or bologna, if yer fancy) sandwiches.

My mom’s church recently requested recipes for a cookbook, and along with some serious recipes, I had to include the official recipe for this sandwich.

It’s a giant blender, a Hamilton Standard.

Tablespoon of smooth peanut butter in a bowl of chili ... and carrots and or celery dipped in PB are good, also. When I was a kid, I made PB and lettuce sandwiches on white bread. Four tablespoons of PB folded thoroughly into a tub of Cool-Whip is the topping for my unusual chocolate icebox pie (instant chocolate pudding(2) with 3 1/2 cups of vanilla yogurt—instead of milk—in a graham cracker crust).

I used to drain a can of spinach, drain a can of tuna fish, mix them, warm and eat.

I eat sharp cheddar with dill pickles.

I like grape jelly with my scrambled eggs.

Candy corn and salted peanuts are heaven together.

And take a strawberry and dip it into sour cream, then brown sugar...yum.

When I was pregnant, I would crave canned spinach. Warm it up, slice boiled eggs over it and pour vinegar on it.

My Dad loves cold bisquits broken up in a glass, with milk poured over it—add sugar. It probably tastes like yankee (Wisconsin) cobbler (biscuit dough).

You betcha. Never heard that name though but...it’s OK..it WAS delicious and makes me think we should include it once again in our lives. Not every day of course but on a really, cold, snowy winter morning.

Banana, peanut butter & mayonnaise sandwich

Nacho Cheese Doritos and under-ripe banana slices

Pinto beans with chow-chow & grape jelly.

Cottage cheese with black pepper, sweetener (I use Splenda, but I used to use sugar), and Cheerios mixed in.

Baked potato with Taco Bell mild sauce and crackers crunched up on top.
