Strange Food Combinations
leadercall ^ | April 9, 2009 | Robert St. John

I was sitting in the movie theatre eating popcorn and Milk Duds while watching the previews of upcoming attractions when my wife asked how I could combine two seemingly opposite food items. I told her that Milk Duds, when eaten simultaneously with popcorn, are very tasty. Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it.

While waiting for the feature presentation I began to think of other strange food combinations that I have eaten through the years. Since childhood, I have dipped my potato chips into applesauce. Like Milk Duds and popcorn, the combination of the salt in the chips and sugar in the applesauce play well off of each other. I have always put ketchup on butter beans and now my children have now acquired a taste for their father’s strange legume-meets-tomato-condiment pairing.

I began to wonder what other people might eat in the way of strange food pairings, so I logged on to my Facebook page and posed the question: “What are the strange food combinations that you like to eat?”

I thought it was weird to put Ranch Dressing on fries...

It is.

Fries go best with mayo. :)

I love them. I ate them as a kid. Once I put liverwurst between two cookies. Only once, though.

My favorite movie theater treat is Reeses Pieces with popcorn!

My favorite strange at home treat is cottage cheese with maple syrup. It takes me back to when I was young, a special dinner, when Dad wasn't home was pancakes for supper. With that, for some reason, we always had cottage cheese as a side dish. When the syrup would overflow the pancakes it would spread into the cottage cheese, and I loved it.

Oh yum! I'll have to try that! I do the peanut butter and bacon sandwich, and I do the peanut butter and honey sandwich with potato chips, but never thought of doing the 3 together. Think I'll try that tomorrow for lunch.

I like mayo with my fries!

The Belgians are fond of mayonnaise on their fries too. I made the mistake of requesting ketchup once, while in Belgium. I was nearly thrown out of the place.

My 19 year old daughter loves to dip her french fries into Wendy’s chocolate Frosties. She’s done it for years. It’s not for me, that’s for sure.

Cream cheese, tomato and black olives on Squaw bread

Another good one is cream cheese on white bread, with butter, and scrap an onion just to get a little juice and put that on top of the cream cheese side. Sounds horrible, but is really, really good!

My uncle used to do a lot of business travel in PA and he always brought home a ring balogna. They were really good, but I have never seen one in the stores here in the South, so haven’t had it in years. It was a yummy snack on a cracker with cheese and a dab of Coleman’s mustard.

I like strawberry jam with my bratwurst, quite tasty - or try a plain hamburger with just mayo and peanut butter - it’s called a goober and will surprise you.
Horseradish and sliced onions on a grilled tuna sandwich is a staple around our place.

Sounds delicious. :) We used to have white bread toasted in hot milk with sugar in it in the cold mornings before school. Milk Toast I think it was called. We loved it. :)
