Angels Starting Pitcher Killed After Ball Game

Posted Apr 9th 2009 10:49AM by TMZ Staff

TMZ has learned Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Nick Adenhart was killed in a felony hit-and-run car accident in Fullerton, California early this morning -- hours after he pitched in a game last night.

Cops say someone driving a minivan blew through a red light, causing the Mitsubishi that Adenhart was riding in to hit a light pole. Three people were killed in the crash, including Nick.

Cops say the person driving the van fled the scene -- but was later caught and charged with felony hit-and-run. The suspect is currently being treated for injuries in a local hospital.

We're told one of the other men killed in the crash was also affiliated with the Angels organization.

Nick was 22-years-old.

FYI -- Nick pitched his ass off last night, striking out 5 guys in 6 scoreless innings. His performance was hailed by sportswriters as a "brilliant effort by a 22-year-old right-hander making his fourth Major League start."

Story developing...

From the Orange Country Register...

Andrew Thomas Gallo, 22, fled the scene, according to police. Gallo, of Riverside, was later arrested and charged with felony hit-and-run. The passenger in the van, Raymond Alexander Rivera, 21, was taken to Western Medical Center-Anaheim with minor injuries...

Horrible. A few Angels came on a Morale trip to see the troops. They were really cool. I am not sure if he was one of them, but I am going to go look at the professional picture they gave each on of us at work tomorrow.

I recently had a cousin killed in an accident where someone ran a redlight.

His pickup truck had the cab separated from the frame from the impact of the crash...

Some may say the Red Light Cameras are wrong, but it might deter such events.

People who habitally SPED UP TO RUN LIGHTS would be basically cited enough times to lose their license.

Some intersections cite people for speeding.

So if someone tries to make a light by speeding up to 70 mph in 35 mph zone, they can be cited for going 35 miles over the speed limit AND running the RED LIGHT...

Ok, in TX, the NFL player rolled (did not blow) through a red light, and was stopped in the hospital parking lot and did not cause an accident and did not hit and run and the officer was not courteous and was beligerent.

here is the story

DALLAS — A police officer was placed on administrative leave Thursday over a traffic stop involving an NFL player whom he kept in a hospital parking lot and threatened to arrest while his mother-in-law died inside the building.

Officer Robert Powell also drew his gun during the March 18 incident involving Houston Texans running back Ryan Moats in the Dallas suburb of Plano, police said.

Moats

“I can screw you over,” he said at one point in the videotaped incident. When another officer came with word that Moats’ mother-in-law was indeed dying, Powell’s response was: “All right. I’m almost done.”

Dallas Police Chief David Kunkle apologized to the family and announced that Powell would be on paid leave pending an internal investigation.

“When we at the command staff reviewed the tape, we were embarrassed, disappointed,” Kunkle said. “It’s hard to find the right word and still be professional in my role as the police chief. But the behavior was not appropriate.”

Powell, 25, a three-year member of the force, stopped Moats’ SUV outside Baylor Regional Medical Center at Plano after Moats rolled through a red light.

Adenhart is from the next town over from me. Played high school ball here - he went through a lot with injuries and looked like he had finally made it. What a shame.

Actually, in that situation, the NFL player had his hazard lights on and was WAVED THROUGH THE INTERSECTION by the only oncoming car. Very different circumstances.

An hour after your post, and not a peep yet from any of the illegal alien posters. Way to jump the gun, people.

“According to the Orange County Register, the perp’s name is Andrew Thomas Gallo, 22, of Riverside. Doesn’t sound like an illegal off the top of my head but you never know.”

That’s impossible. I read several posts on this thread that since the article didn’t mention the perpetrator’s immigration status then he surely was an illegal alien. Are you suggesting that an American driver could have committed a crime?

(And for the sarcasm impaired, yes, my tongue is planted firmly in cheek. But not in the gay way.)

Andrew Gallo, 22, of Riverside fled the accident scene on foot and was arrested a half-hour later by Anaheim Police at Orangethorpe and State College Boulevard. Police confirmed Galloís license had been suspended prior to the accident for a previous drunken driving conviction accourding to a press release sent out by the City of Fullerton.

Well, they guy IS hispanic, but no word on his immigration status. Do they give out licenses for illegal aliens in California? (I know they’ve at least talked about doing that in many places — like Colorado).

FYI. Re: blood-alcohol level in driver and origin. From CBS 8 in San Diego (Angels rookie Adenhart killed in hit & run crash):

Police Lt. Kevin Hamilton told an Anaheim news conference a preliminary test indicates the driver of the minivan had a blood-alcohol level above the legal limit.

[snip]

Twenty-2-year-old Andrew Thomas Gallo of Riverside fled but was arrested a half-hour later for investigation of felony hit & run driving.

They have postponed tonight's game against the A's - which I expected would happen.

Hopefully won't have the same type of idiots that posted on the DK threads 7 years ago about the game being postponed.

I don't think the NFL player BLEW through the red light.

Yeah, well, bigotry requires no facts -- in fact, that's almost redundant.

No; in fact, he stopped at the red light, let a car pass through, and only went through it after the intersection was clear.

Now, we add Adenhart's name onto a list that just seems unreal.

Since the Angels came into existence in 1961 as an American League team, there's been these litany of tragedies that hardly seems fair:

1965: Rookie pitcher Dick Wantz dies of a brain tumor one month after his only major league game.

1968: Pitcher Minnie Rojas is paralyzed in a car accident that kills his two daughters.

1972: Infielder Chico Ruiz is killed in a car accident in San Diego.

1974: Relief pitcher Bruce Heinbechner, about to start his major league career, dies in a car accident during spring training in Palm Springs.

1975: Former pitcher Jim McGlothlin dies of leukemia at the age of 32.

1977: Shortstop Mike Miley is killed in a car accident in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

1978: Outfielder Lyman Bostock is shot and killed in Gary, Indiana, the victim of mistaken identity.

1981: Former catcher Ed Kirkpatrick is paralyzed in a car accident.

1989: Star relief pitcher Donnie Moore, who gave up Dave Henderson's home run in the 1986 ALCS with two outs and two strikes on him, shoots his wife, then commits suicide in front of the couple's son.

1992: Coach Deron Johnson dies of cancer. One month later, a team bus crashes during a road trip going from New York to Baltimore. Several members of the team are injured, and manager Buck Rodgers is hospitalized. The team had to postpone two games in Baltimore to restock their roster.

1996: Hall of Fame player and team coach Rod Carew's daughter, Michelle, dies of leukemia.

Do the Angels play their game tonight against the A's? Do they try to put this behind them and focus on baseball? How can you?

Adenhart is survived by his father Jim and mother Janet. His family released the following statement: "Nick's family expresses sincere gratitude for all the help the Angels have provided. He lived his dream and was blessed to be part of an organization comprised of such warm, caring, and compassionate people. The Angels were his extended family. Thanks to all of Nick's loyal supporters and fans throughout his career. He will always be in everyone's hearts forever."

Angels GM Tony Reagins issued the following statement on behalf of the club: "The Angels family has suffered a tremendous loss today. We are deeply saddened and shocked by this tragic loss. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Nick's famil, friends' loved ones and fans."

Take the day off. Do the right thing.
