SYDNEY (AFP) — A pet dog that fell overboard in rough seas off Australia has been reunited with its owners after surviving alone on an island for four months, reports said.

Sophie Tucker, apparently named after a late US entertainer, fell overboard as Jan Griffith and her family sailed through choppy waters off the northeast Queensland coast in November.

The dog was believed to have drowned and Griffith said the family was devastated.

But out of sight of the family, Sophie Tucker was swimming doggedly and finally made it to St Bees Island, five nautical miles away, and began the sort of life popularised by the TV reality show "Survivor."...

"The story is about the dog, why do you have to inject your political crap into it?"

Whether it be the totems of ancients, the fables of Aesop, or the Grimm fairy tales, the activity of many animals contain little (or big) morality tales for us humans. I'm certainly not one who promotes the anthropomorphism of animals by humans, yet if the animals are being used merely as symbols of human behavior to convey a greater message, I deon't believe there's any harm done.

And frankly, that's a pretty cool dog.

The first question that came to my mind was: Was this dog wearing any kind of floatation device? Any dog of mine would be wearing one unless we were tied up at the pier. Australian waters can be really rough.

Good doggie and irresponsible owners.

How were they irresponsible? Rough seas and the dog goes overboard.

I agree it’s a cool dog, but I don’t really know what the other stuff was, you said.

I was justifying the injection of the other poster's "political crap".

Somedays it just comes effortlessly.

This dog has more guts than the rest of us do against Obama and the rest of the Washington crooks.

P.S.

When are we going to kick Obama out?

Well...no. Flock protectors and herders are two different activities. Herding dogs have highly honed predatory instincts, lucky for this dog to be born what he was!

Great story, I have a cattle dog. Smart as a whip and tough as nails. Also alpha female of the pack.

On a lake on would want a flotation device, for one has a good chance of finding the dog. in open ocean...not such a good idea. next to no chance of finding the dog. dog will usually slip away and drown. flotation devices for animals are a slow form of tortue, letting the dog die of dehydration/horrible thirst...or seagull ripping it to death.

Had a bull terrier who thought boating was great sport. One time he had his fore paws on the boat and his back paws on the dock ... the boat started to drift away from the dock, I've never seen a short stocky bull terrier morf into a wiener dog but ours did ... he was determined not to fall in ... but stretching proved futile and into the water he plopped. My wife had a similar experience but that's another story.
