Welcome to the (I guess) official thread to the 73rd playing of the Masters Golf Tournament from the Augusta National Golf Club. Now the game that we love and it's season is now officially, let's see who will be walking the 18th fairway ready to slip the coveted green jacket on late Sunday afternoon.
We all know who's in the field. While I'm posting this thread early, we can discuss and predict who's going to win.

One of my favorite childhood memories is of the 15th tee box at Augusta 1970. I was standing with my Dad on the back of the tee looking down on the 10th green watching Sam Sneed putt out. I sensed someone behind me and turned around to see Jack Nickolas standing there also watching. We watched for a bit, then he turned around and hit a 300+ yard drive down the 15th fairway. I was muchly impressed!
Then there was the time that Tiger overshot the 17th Green and his ball rolled into my Dad's food. But that's another story.
My uncle who had the tickets, and, my Dad have both passed now, so, even if I could get tickets, I don't know if I would go. We had a great time!
The Shark showed he still has some game left at last year’s British Open. It would be amazing to see him contend yet again at Augusta.
But you would never know it from the neighborhood it's in, would you?
Sorry but the North East Georgia Bobby Jones Invitational is not a major in my book. Majors have always been championships of something. As in golf the US Open, British Open, British Amateur, US Amateur, PGA championship, and similarly in tennis. How does the NEGBJI fit into that?
The NEGBJI belongs with other other tourney started by or in honor of PGA stars like Palmer’s invitation, Jack’s Memorial, the Nelson/Hogan tourney etc. None of them are majors nor is the NEGBJI.
The TPC on the other hand is a championship of something. It is the championship of the touring players. Naturally it has a better field than the NEGBJI. It doesn’t have the racist past of the NEGBJI. It does not have a bunch of old cranks pretending it more of a golf event and treating the public like old cranks always do.
The idea of majors has always been fluid. The NEGBJI never should have been considered a major, but it was becaue golf like tennis wanted four as in a grand slam. But the TCP stepped up and gave us at real 4th major. Maybe some day the PGA will be replaced by a championship of Asia or NZ/Australia or some other place. But for now we have four championship of something to call majors, the Open Championship, the US Open, the PGA and TPC.
Who picked Immelman last year?
Sure, but it's not a major. The Masters is. All you have to do is look at the list of past champions, not to mention how the players feels about it.
I first heard this term used by Johnny Carson-you are a Cult of One.
Hers is an interesting tidbit. Maybe its Arnie’s fault-—
The majors originally consisted of the Open Championship, the British Amateur or The Amateur Championship, the U.S. Open, and the U.S. Amateur. With the introduction of the Masters Tournament in 1934, and the rise of professional golf in the late 1940s and 1950s, the term “major championships” eventually came to describe the Masters, the U.S. Open, the Open Championship, and the (U.S.) PGA Championship.
It is difficult to determine when the definition changed to include the current four tournaments, although many trace it to Arnold Palmer’s 1960 season, when after winning the Masters and the U.S. Open to start the season he remarked that if he could win the Open Championship and PGA Championship to finish the season, he would complete “a grand slam of his own” to rival Bobby Jones’s 1930 feat.
You going on Tuesday or Wednesday for the par 3?
No matter. Have a great time!!!!
As I said it is a fluid concept. I have seen interviews with Nicholas where he wants credit for his US AM which was a major at the time, but maybe kiddingly does not want Woods to get credit for his 3 US AMs.
But anyway as far as I am concerned the NEGBJI is a nice tourney like Arnie’s invitational or Jack’s Memorial, but it is not a major. We shall see how history views this.
Yeah. You’re on Z’s main ping list. As he is out of the country, I’m honored to step in and be the leader of our little motley crew of golf fanatics.
I can’t wait for Thursday. As bad as the weather is going to be in much of the country a lot of this week, let’s hope things are good down there!!!
I like the idea of KP winning too cause he doesn’t back down from a good battle.
Rory McIlroy can give Tiger a run in plenty of tourneys in the years to come. This kid has the moxie and the mad game to win many majors.
Look out for Anthony Kim this week. As poor as he’s been so far, he’s flying under the radar. Not a bad place to be when Tiger’s grabbing all the headlines as usual.
Funny thought. I’m watching the golf today and the show a promo for Heads up Poker. They show Orel Hershiser in this thing. My first thought, Payne Stewart laughing from above that Mr. mild mannered plays POKER!!!!
That’s when I fell in love with the greatest game ever played. That Sunday was something we’ll all take to our graves with us and never forget.
Great stories!!!
It is on my bucket list, that’s for sure...
Someday......
Yep, NOW I’M READY!!!!!
I have no idea who would have picked Trevor, but how’s this one.....
Imagine if Boo Weekley wins. First think of what the interviews would be about.
Then imagine what he’ll serve for the champion’s dinner!!!
Wonder what’s on Trevor’s menu for Tuesday night?
If Sarah Palin played 18 rounds with Mike Ditka, how many touchdowns would she win by?
