SHERMAN, C.T. (WPIX) -- A pony, racing around a field on Route 39 in Sherman, Conn. Wednesday, was severely injured after being mauled by two pit bulls that escaped from a neighbor's yard in West Fairfield, officials said.
Anna Walsh, a mail carrier who was working at the time, witnessed the entire incident and saw the dogs leaping and biting the horse's mane, tail and neck. She said the whole thing seemed surreal.
"There was no barking, no noise," Walsh told The News Times. "It was like when you watch Wild Kingdom, when the lions bring down the water buffalo."
Walsh said she initially thought the animals were playing until she realized something was seriously wrong. She immediately phoned for help and says within minutes State Trooper Rupert De Los Reyes arrived on scene. Reyes reportedly used his service baton to club the vicious dogs until they let go of the pony.
Michael Robbins, who owns the 13-year-old pony named Billy, say he's grateful his pet is alive, although injured very badly. He says the dogs' owner, John Lukse, was very remorseful over the vicious attack.
"He was very apologetic," said Robbins. "He said he had been raking leaves and the dogs got out of their pen when his wife opened the door."
The pony is being treated for severe injuries to his face, one eye and legs. He remains in intensive care at New England Equine Practice in Patterson.
I’m glad my Jack Russells are small dogs. They can be really viscious but are too small to do much damage.
I have been told, repeatedly, that attacks like this are rare.

The dog owner will not be pleased with the vet bill for the horse.
I’ve read that attacks like this by pit bulls are rare. That claim is one I’ve heard many, many times, always after a put bull kills or maims.

Some of us 50-something-year-old male adults have nightmares where we watch pit bull attack ponies.

Let the same rule apply to German Sheppards, Rotties, etc.
I used to own two of the most beautiful, smartest, kindest animals in the dog world - Pitt Bulls.
They killed no babies, to my knowledge.....the only damage caused to any human (common complaint from friends at the house) was their tail wagging. Steel rods, as one friend said.
My two were glad to meet and greet anyone. As long as the alpha male (me) did the introductions.
Once they knew the "top dog" said it was cool, you were in for the Pitt treatmeant - lots of slobber and a good thrashing from the "steel rod" tail.
Those dogs took their que from my, or my wife's, actions.

When i had to leave, for business, they took over security.
I saw to it that those dogs were "socialized" with other dogs, no problem-as long as those dogs were not on their property.
The dogs are not the problem, the owners are.
There already all kinds of laws about pets you can’t have from Ocelots to flying squirrels (depending on your state).
Guns don’t kill people...not all by themselves...but pitbulls do.
I say legalize flying squirrels. Tax pitbulls in the same class as lions and tigers.

Oh my, that reminds me of my friend’s Jack Russells. Dogs were once allowed at soccer games where her daughter played until her female bit someone. Not only are all dogs now banned, but when it came time for her dog to do her time in quarantine, she sent the male instead saying, “It was the chivalrous thing for him to do.” LOL
I can’t stop laughing.... that is hilarious! After listening to $ Trillions we’ll owe forever - I needed a good laugh to tuck me in for the night. Thank you.

When the pony gets mauled by a coyote, the pony gets blamed for being there.
