Protocol seems to be dispensed with when the Obamas come to town.
Michelle Obama and the Queen slipped their arms around each other towards the end of a reception at Buckingham Palace held in honor of the G20 leaders and their wives.
The president and his wife appeared very relaxed in the company of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh from the start.

Yet ANOTHER protocol gaffe.
This is the most embarrassing administration ever!
Odd.
I thought Barney Frank remained in Washington.
Gee, Michelle and the queen. Where are the magazine covers ad nauseam? They’ll be rammed down our throats all next week.
Who says it’s a “gaffe”?
Do you doubt for second that MO sees herself as “queen” of America?
I don’t.
I’m much more upset about obama bowing and scraping before the King of Saudi Arabia than I am about Michelle ‘touching’ the Queen. Who the hell is the Queen that she can’t be touched? We’re a Republic, remember???
Maybe Michelle was just helping the Queen walk (yeah, that’s the ticket) She was “helping the Queen”.
Didn't see a video of the episode, but saw a couple of stills and it looks pretty mutual.
Yeah — the queen with ugly legs who wears mini skirts on official business.
No one ever thought we could have a 1st lady more tacky than mama tereza. We were wrong.
Did she try to do the “knuckle bump” thing with the queen?
Yo, yo, queenie, what up?
Maybe they’re just bee-boppin’ to “Pimpin’ Ain’t Easy” on her new iPod.
You can take the girl outta the ‘hood but you can’t take the ‘hood outta the girl.
From another news site:
When first lady Michelle Obama hugged Queen Elizabeth yesterday, it was reminiscent of the classic American masterpiece Tommy Boy when Chris Farley, embracing his new stepbrother said, Brothers dont shake hands, brothers gotta hug!
Now while it was perfectly acceptable and quite frankly touching when this act of love occurred in the movie, its not supposed to happen with the queen.
Queens dont hug!
In fact, it is considered a breach of royal protocol.
Eyewitness
What happened next rocked the world. Or at least Britain. Get a load of how the Daily Mail reported it:
The Queen started chatting to Michelle Obama. She appeared to look up at her and make a comment about how tall she was, said an eyewitness. As she did, she put her arm around Mrs Obama and rested her gloved hand on the small of her back.
Almost simultaneously, Mrs Obama put her arm around the Queens shoulders rather more firmly. The pair then looked at their feet and appeared to be discussing their shoes.
The Queen then dropped her arm and, a few seconds later, Michelle did the same. The entire exchange lasted around eight to ten seconds but was absolutely extraordinary, gasped the observer.
Historymaking
Overly dramatic? Apparently not. The reporter goes on to say, No-one - including the ladies-in-waiting standing nearby - could believe their eyes. In 57 years, the Queen has never been seen to make that kind of gesture and it is certainly against all protocol to touch her.
It makes you wonder if in times past you would have heard an immediate Off with her head!
They take this so seriously, apparently, that when Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating dared touch the queen back in 1992, he was besieged with criticism, later earning the nickname Lizard of Oz.
Thankfully Michelle didnt go all Blarney Stone on Her Majesty.
She knew exactly what she was doing. “How dare someone as lowly as the queen not long for my touch!”
“We are not amused.”
Looks like a guy in drag.
Our local affiliate that carries "Entertainment Tonight" have been running an obscene amount of promos for the nightly broadcast that have been prominently featuring Barry & Michelle. I haven't watched the actually show, but I'd wager it's a regular love-fest.
According to the Daily Mail it sounds like the queen knew she’d better bow to the wife of the anti-christ.
I don’t have a problem with the First Lady hugging the Queen - if she hit it off with the Queen good for her, that’s part of her job.
Better than giving her a 2 for 1 movie package from walmart that doesn’t work in European dvd players.
